A Mexican family would never, ever allow a stranger inside their house.

When I was in Havana, I stopped outside a window of a house to listen to the music they were playing in the living room. When they noticed me, they stopped playing and invited me in. They gave me some orange juice and introduced me to brother, mother, sister, everyone. We had a good time, a very good human time.

  2. I use a service in the states that receives my mail, scans the envelope and sends me an email to let me know. I can view the scan and decide what to do next: have them scan the contents, forward it, or shred it.

This might not be the best option if you're only going to be away a few months, but thought I'd toss it out there in case. I've been using this service for over 10 years and it's been handy. Most all my dealings are electronic, but there's still a small amount of paper involved.

... but understanding the answers makes me feel like a beginner.

A street hustler guy I know stopped by the table where I was having coffee with a Mexican friend. After he went on his way, I told my friend how I always had trouble understanding that guy. My friend said: Don't worry. I couldn't understand him, either. 🙂

So if you see anyone in the area with a shoulder mount Camera, come and say hello as that will be most likely be me.

Okay, have fun and if I see you around, I'll try and say hello. I'm from Guanajuato but am in Chapala off and on.

Also, don't mind the trolls and the rude/unpleasant people. Most people are cool, but there's always a few who live to put others down.

So you can see some of things she does for me, here is a tribute video I made for my previous JR who I also trained.

I love the way you have trained your doggies to pick stuff up. The only thing my dogs pick up is food if it falls on the floor, and they don't give it back. :)

  6. Lately, I've traveled from Guanajuato to Chapala several times. The app.sct.gob.mx site is way off. For instance, it shows the first toll here in Guanajuato to be 24 pesos, which it hasn't been for at least 6 years. Others similarly out of date. Tollsmart at least is closer to the real price.

Plus, app.sct.gob.mx still uses Adobe flash player. Tells you all you need to know about their commitment to stay updated. Which is to say, they don't have one.

We have made the decision that we are not going to go to extraordinary lengths to prolong life when our time comes, we've had too many experiences with friends and relatives suffering far too much from that and dying anyway.

Since we're on the topic of death (sort of) , allow me to mention:

    https://lastlanding.com/

a digital deadman switch service for people who want to make sure that selected info gets into the right hands in the event of their disappearance or death. It's a good way to make sure things that need to be disclosed do indeed get disclosed.

And speaking of disclosure: I am the creator / owner.

  8. About thirteen years ago, somebody told me of a writer's conference in San Miguel de Allende. I went because it was in Mexico and I didn't know anything much about Mexico.

At the end of the conference week, I went home and started getting ready to move. Lived in San Miguel for a while, Mexico City for a while, San Cristobal de las Casas, and later wound up in Guanajuato where I've been for about 10 years. Haven't been in the states now for about 5 years.

  9. When I travel north, I cross at Columbia, west of Laredo, and then double back to interstate 35 for San Antonio, etc.

The reason is that I've run into so much delay at Laredo, hours of it. Although out of the way, the Columbia crossing usually has a lot less traffic.

p.s. Edit to mention that I haven't crossed the border for some years now. It may be worse or better.

  10. You didn't mention nationally, but if this helps, I renewed my U.S. passport one year ago, January 2021. I went to the U.S. embassy in Guadalajara with my old passport, my Mexico papers (which I don't think I needed), the DS-82 form, and a new photo. The photos have different size requirements than photos used for Mexican ID stuff, so you need to let the photo place know.

Anyway, it went smoothly and the embassy mailed me the new passport a couple of weeks later.

Where do they have foto radar set up now I wonder?

I use an app on my phone named Waze. I use it for driving directions, which you probably don't need. But I do, in Guadalajara at least. Anyway, it announces when a speed camera is ahead.  Pretty nice, although in the city traffic I'm not sure how anyone manages to go over the limit. :)

  12. I used to fill the gas tank (120 liters) every couple of months at about 800 pesos a fill. A few years back I bought a solar water heater with more capacity then we usually need (but just to be sure). That and the other plumbing parts cost about 10k pesos total. A friend of mine and I did the installation and since then, I fill the gas tank maybe once a year, if that.

The solar heater has been the best thing that we've done to the house. I love it.
