  1. The traffic was already low for some reason! The lights simply got turned off. Gee, wouldn't it be nice if you could actually make traffic disappear by turning off the signals? They do that on a lot of normal Sundays in Ajijic, it does not improve anything.
  2. This is good news. I had dengue - twice - once about 10 years ago here and last Nov. Dec.+ It's no picnic. It starts with an unmistakably sudden onset - you wake up feeling OK but by the afternoon you are wasted with high fever, aches, pains, vomiting. Go directly to your doctor. They can give you a shot for the nausea so you can at least drink water and eat very lightly - vegetarian. And take only their recommendation for pain pills. Some can cause your blood to thin out which is exactly what you don't want. I had to get a blood test every other day for 2 weeks to check the platelet count. Did not have to go to the hospital. Low platelet count is what causes the internal bleeding that can kill. I am reminded of the wife of Ajijic Juanra who died of dengue last year. The local doctors here say it is catching all year around now. Silly me, I thought the "dengue season" coincided with the rainy season, but no. The nights are not getting chilly enough anymore to kill off the mosquito. I had neighbors with it as well. One gringo told me he caught it in January - the coldest month? I never saw any mosquitos around my house or even most other bugs either. I thought I was safe.
  3. It's funny, no one noticed that the traffic was already very low and I think that is WHY all those signals weren't working. They just turned them off. Mon., Tues., Wed., the traffic was way down from usual levels starting in Ajijic, going all the way to Chapala what a breeze! I thought it must have something to do with Mexican Election day, since nothing else was out of the ordinary. I discussed that with a Mexican friend, and he thought maybe so many Tapatios that usually come here stayed home to vote in the their own area. Don't know. It was closer to normal today, but still nothing like what we have seen in recent months. Under normal crowded conditions, no way could people navigate the Walmart intersection without those lights, which are still confusing. It only worked because the traffic was already so low.
  4. Does anyone know WHY telmex internet keeps going out????
  5. Are they legal here? How well do they work? Gracias.
  6. Nope, you are way off. The Federal and State noise laws were written up by Mexicans, not gringos!!! Plenty of Mexicans are sick of the noise, especially rock bands from local bars where they play loud enough for 5000 people for an audience of maybe 30-40, if that. If you spoke Spanish, you could talk to the neighbors of these bars and find out how they really feel. GDL has an active cruzadacontraelruido which has brought about positive changes but it hasn't been enough Go the their FB page to find out how Mexicans really feel. It was reported in the GR that in the 1 month period between the new Jalisco Law and its enforcement, they had 1000 noise complaints. Please do not paint this as a gringo problem, that just shows what a bubble you are living in.
  7. Do you need to bring copies of your CURP and visa or just bring the originals for them to see?
  8. Date Guadalajara Chapala Ocotlán and Ciudad Guzmán Friday May 14 M, N, OYP F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O and P Any letter Saturday May 15 Q, R, S Q, U, V, W, X, Y, Z and laggards. Any letter Sunday May 16 T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z and laggards - - This is what is currently on the Jalisco site. Several of the letters (like for my last name) are listed for Sat. and Sunday!?? I can't believe it. With all the crowds, they are adding MORE people on certain days???
  9. So... is this the final correct schedule? I saw this a couple days ago on FB posted by Ajijic Juanra. But then it was deleted. WTF is up? I would be in the Monday group.
  10. Last week I was misinformed by a bilingual Mexican that they were giving the 2nd shots that day and he advised me to get down there, so I went. What I found was only 2 Servidores working outside the little purple bldg. on the malecon, and all they were doing is getting people's paperwork in order so it doesn't have to be done on the day of shots, greatly extending the time spent that day. So, my paperwork is in order, I have the proof of my 1st shot. They said they don't know the specific location that will be used for Ajijic because they had logistical problems with that site because of people entering from all sides, etc. They said there would not be appointments for the shots, but rather, the days they are given will be divided up by the alphabet, so you go on the day of the First letter of your Last name. That information will be posted on the gov. websites already used. This info is from an Involved Party.
  11. Here is my 2 pesos worth: Last Friday a Mexican friend said to go down to the Ajijic malecon to get your 2nd shot. Error! I went down there but they were only giving out the "comprabante" showing that you had the 1st shot. They were set up near but not in the "purple house" which is just a little building. The guy told me that they did not yet have a firm plan for WHERE the 2nd shots would be given because the Ajijic location had too many entry points, causing confusion. He said people would be calling us for citas, but he mentioned that so many foreigners have phones with message machines, and they don't leave messages. So it is very unclear at this point what is happening. So what else is new? I hope the first shot doesn't wear out by the time we get the 2nd. I googled "vacuna ajijic chapala " and found nothing about 2nd shots.
  12. Many of us have been a little wary of the Chinese Sinovac which we are getting here in the Chapala area. I had my jab last Thursday (in a record? 4.5 hours!), ate a sandwich there and later that night came down with the runs. So the next day I went to Dr. Rodriguez at The Clinic and he told me he thought Sinovac was actually the best choice, if you are looking ahead at the variants coming our way. Always best to look ahead in iffy situations. He said Sinovac would be more effective with the 3 new variants because the Chinese have the original "mother/father" covid cel in their vaccine and that it will be more effective than the "older" versions. We all know how viruses can and do mutate. A 90-yr.-old woman in NYC with no travel history was just found to have the Brazilian variant. That means it's already in the population, who knows about here? Take good care! I googled it and found this: https://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/en/saude/noticia/2021-03/studies-show-coronavac-efficient-against-three-coronavirus-variants
  13. This must be the new epidemic, my neighbors and I have those "hormigas corteros" as well, ugh. We are using 2 remedies from the hardware store, one white powder - I don't think it is boric acid which I use for roaches - and some brown pellets. Hopefully they will work. If you want a real shock, google "cutter ants." Their mounds can stretch for miles!
  14. Who do you call? I need that info now that I have a car and a garage door, people park IFO it, before, never.
  15. I wish to question this Mexican thing of "showing up early" so you don't have to wait. Hah!!! If everyone shows up early (like at Telmex or IMSS back in the old days) then everyone still has to wait a long time. It has always worked better for me to show up late and just walk in. But this case may be very different. I didn't even find out about today's vaxx scheduling until I left the house almost 5:00 and walked around the corner and saw an Amiga Mexicana who told me about it, so I ran home and got my papers and went down there and stood in line - on a perfectly gorgeous day by the lake! Anyway, I was there about 10 minutes when a senyorita with a clipboard and pen showed up and started making a list of names - from the back forward!! I was #3 on the list. So far so good, but I was told come back at 7... with the rest of the crowd... etc. Vamos a ver! I'm usually not up at that hour.
  16. I just had 3 of these tonight. They have been happening roughly every week for many weeks, lost count. The juice comes right back on, but still, you never know. Anyone know what is happening with this? We are not even having bad weather.
  17. I tried to reply to the pertinent thread but once I wrote out my post, I could not access the "submit" button. Am I banned or what? So I am trying again. Replying to Mainecoons about the frozen windmills: This is no time to be even subtly bashing Clean Energy. The reason that the windmills froze over in Texas is that they were not winterized as they are in normally cold climates. With global warming changes, people have to become more adaptable to recurrent extreme and unprecedented weather conditions which are not going to go away before they wreak havoc. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/16/texas-wind-turbines-frozen/ Below is a temperature variance map from January which shows the cause of the polar vortex splitting and moving abnormally south into the USA. This is caused by abnormal heat in the arctic region. As Texas freezes, remember that there have been severe wildfires in Siberia and Scandinavia above the arctic circle. Glaciers in the Himalayas have melted causing huge damage to a dam which resulted in widespread flooding in populated areas. Chunks of Antarctica are breaking off into the sea. And more...
  18. Please note: This was posted LAST Tuesday; they did not give the exact DATE of this blackouts - this week or next? I did not experience a blackout here. Sorry for any confusion.

  20. i'm trying to register on the website as we speak. I filled out the form but when I click Send, nothing happens. Any suggestions?

  22. That comes from my medical insurance guy as well. He says private as well as state hospitals are filled up. This is not a good time to come here if you are thinking about it. Just stay home! I'm not traveling anywhere until CV is over with. Might be a long while. I wouldn't want to get on a plane and find some wacko anti-masker there making trouble.
  23. There is a Photo shop on Ocampo somewhere across the street from Manix. They specialize in passport fotos. Sorry I can't be any more specific. You'll find it if you walk around a bit.
  24. I've lived in my current house here for 8.5 years and the house is about 10 years old. The water system is Puro Mexicano, and I still don't understand how it all works. The water is very hard and leaves deposits on your sinks and faucets, etc and are hard to clean. Extra sprayed vinegar helps. i use a solution of cider vinegar and bottle water to rinse my hair and face, comes out much better. The water guys drive by every so often to deliver, you just have to run out when they are there - and get to know them and their routines. The carry the water into my house and put it in the "tipador." I give them an extra 10 pesos for that. I have to get the tinaco cleaned every couple months - but I didn't even know that and lived here for 3 years before I found out! The other places I've lived, I did not have to do that, and I don't know why. Mexican landlords may not explain these things to you because they think it's common knowledge or something. The unfiltered water here can also gunk up your plumbing. I have become slowly shocked at how often I need minor repairs done around here. I brush my teeth with tap water, and recently it tastes funny. My maid told me sometimes tree roots grow into the pozo. Don't most gringos live in houses with completely filtered water?
  25. That happened to me years ago. The solution is easy. Get references from local friends, get their cards, and then call them to deliver so you know who you are dealing with. Never had any problems since doing that. Most are honest. I did explain to them for a while - en espanyol - that I had been ripped off and that is why I wanted to see the gauge. Other rip off happened - there are knife sharpeners who go door to door, signaling their availability by blowing a high pitched little whistle. They do kitchen knives, scissors, garden tools, blender blades, you name it. Very handy service. The same guy came for years. Then a new one showed up and charged exorbitant prices and had the nerve to say the other guy had died. Then the original guy showed up and I told him this story and he said lots of people got ripped off by this guy; never saw him again. Cuidado!
