  1. Yes the group is still hiking, but at reduced rate after covid. Apparently sometimes on the weekend locals exact a tribute for using some of the popular trails. I can live with that....
  2. Oh, and we have booked in Lourdes for a month starting Dec 20. Looking forward to it and the moving on to Tlaxcala for the rest of the winter
  3. Thank you Ibarra! I will let you know what I find out...
  4. Nobody knows any club contacts? I'll go back to my 2019 emails for contact....I use to get a weekly email with the hikes... Makes me wonder if the club has disbanded?
  5. My friend and I are the registered owners but only I will be traveling to MX....can I get a permit from Empalme?
  6. We are thinking of returning to Lakeside....but we heard that the Hiking Group was no longer too active because the indigenous locals had decided to cut off access to the Mountain. We both hike and would like to know what the status is....can you give me a contact or answer this question? thanks a bunch!
  7. I left our hiking boots at a friends in Chapala as we planned to be back this winter. The virus got in our way. We are spending the winter just north of Nogales AZ and would be very appreciative if some kind person would carry them north....happy to meet up and buy lunch or something...we are near the interstate. Please PM me if you or somebody you know can help out.... thanks so much, Willy
  8. I have concluded this search. Sixt at Guadalajara airport is highly recommended. I reached out to their MX head office and confirmed that all of the rates they quote INCLUDE the required third party insurance. Response 1.- Insurance against third parties ( THIRD PARTY INSURANCE ), this is already included in all rates can not be removed in any way 2.- Unlimited mileage 3.- Local taxes and local fees. The rate for a 5 passenger automatic Nissan Versa or similar works out to $12.60usd daily which is the best I could find. I am very happy with this booking. I spend a lot of time going behind the local franchises and what is included. This was not easy and I hope others can use my work and save themselves time and heartache.
  9. I have to update....the rentcars.com site had directed me to book with Americar rental. When I looked at the reviews they were horrible. What I feared most is that once at the agency they add on more charges and do not honour the contract. This IS the case with this company and I cancelled my booking. I am continuing to look and right now it looks like an agency called Sixt is very well regarded. The rate I got with them through hotwire is great, but I am corresponding to see if it DOES include mandatory liability insurance. Will update when more is known.
  10. My wife crochets regularly and will need to bring yarn next time we fly down to Lakeside unless I come up with a supplier. Help!
  11. Thanks for all of the replies. Here is where they led me. rentcars.com is great. You can check liability bpx and then get the quote that you will actually pay. I have a standard car for 16 bucks a day. I recommend this site. Expedia was not as good on the insurance, but you could get to the bottom line. Best rate was more than above. Local rentals...I have requested 2 quotes and one has replied and the rate is almost double what I have now found. Add in 30 bucks each way to airport and that is way more expensive. thanks again for your help.
  12. I am looking for people who have had real experience renting a car at the Guadalajara Airport. I have found out that the prices quoted, which are very very low, do not include mandatory insurance. This is a scam really because the rental agencies know the insurance is mandatory but don't quote it. It is possible that some rental companies will accept car insurance purchased from Mexican insurance companies who specialize in this insurance. But supposedly there's no way to tell unless you talk to them at the counter. So if you have had experience and no other way to avoid the very expensive rental insurance the companies sell themselves please post that helpful information. I am looking to rent a car for the next trip to Lakeside and I'm trying to stick handle through the mandatory insurance rates.
  13. I highly recommend Carlos escalera. I would say probably the best mechanic shop that I have ever dealt with anywhere period. he diagnosed my fuse problem which I had been warned in the states would take a couple of days for a very reasonable price. He fixed another problem the shops in the States were unable to fix for next to nothing. He got in a specialist to make a key for me without having to make a separate trip.he suggested couple of places to take my car to have things done that he doesn't do like a wheel alignment. I'm sure there's other shops that are very good but I would not hesitate to go back and deal with him and have an enjoyable experience with a good mechanic who speaks good English.

  15. Yes, I was just thinking how that was helpful. now one more... thankyou!
  16. whew. Folks down here have a lot of time on their hands! I thought I made a simple reach out to a certain segment of the population and all these comments come back that are completely unhelpful to me or the people making the comment. I made the same request in another part of Mexico and ended up renting several places and making some lifelong friends. Not sure why you folks need to take the time to comment that you are uninterested in my proposition, but thanks for the lesson. No need to say anymore than that.... again, have a great day! (maybe go out and do something interesting?)
  17. Thanks for telling me you are not interested......I am sure that there are thousands who are not interested. I am looking for the several who MIGHT be. Now, some of you have that have replied negatively have missed the important information I wrote. I will write that more carefully for you quick readers.... I am an airbnb superhost who has DOZENS of PERFECT reviews from folks BOTH as a guest and as a host. AND I have EIGHT years of being entrusted with someone else's dream home. Those owners include, in the past a retired policeman, and currently an NPR radio executive. That is a continuing relationship that I will return to in 3 weeks after leaving Chapala. I am currently in an Airbnb HERE and that host will ALSO tell what great guests we are. I am proud of my track record. So, no need to share YOUR horror stories, I have been a landlord for over 40 years and I know what can happen AND I know what folks need to know to start trusting someone. have a good day!
  18. Of course I look on Airbnb! I am in one right now! But there are many folks who do not rent on a continuous basis or would not rent their home to folks they do not know. I understand that feeling very well. Thanks for the suggestion.
  19. Lots of folks who would not invite just anybody might rent for a month to friends or trusted folks. If you want to travel somewhere, we can pay some of your expenses while you do that and treat your home like it should be treated. We are a quiet couple who superhost an Airbnb in Canada and caretake an executive home in Arizona. You can see our dozens of 5 star reviews on Airbnb. We have references galore. I am a retired Property Appraiser and my wife worked with special needs students. No pets, no parties. AND we are here in Chapala for 3 more weeks, so we can meet and gain each others trust. Friends you have not met yet. We are looking at renting NEXT year, November-December 2020 Our needs are simple, we need a house for a month or so as we spend a month in Mexico every year. Best for us is December but we are flexible. We like to hike and are making friends in the Ajijic hiking group. Several have already suggested we stay in their home and house swap while they travel but we are not in that position as our house in AZ is entrusted to us. Please PM me if this appeals to you or one of your friends. In any case, thanks for reading! Willy and Mona
  20. I just started playing (used to be a bad tennis player, now trying to be a bad pickleballer) and would welcome a similar partner, man or woman, to try the Monte Carlo courts. PM me if interested in single play...the doubles is not enough of a workout. I'm flexible about timing and only a 5 minute walk from the Monte Carlo. thanks. Willy
  21. Thanks the OP said This can be problematic, since I'm trying to connect with medical issues. Then they said my suggestion was not good because their relative could not use a computer. Then they said they use skype all the time. Yeah, sometime trying to help folks is wasted effort. But we all try, dont we?
  22. And if you use gmail, you can call for free without installing skype. I just did that....on google hangouts
  23. Me too. The OP wants an urgent solution.....
