Have you talked with the local store about it and had them check them, and also, how long has it been? ...

Local store changed the bad lens once. I'll try for another week before going for an order from another store (online or otherwise).

Wasn't aware of this option. Thanks for the info.

Costco membership is not required to purchase eye wear. Just pick up a free one day pass at their checkout counter and you are good for one day of shopping.

    Didn't realize this. Thanks!

... Was it an Ophthalmologist or a optometrist?  ...

Eye exam was by an Oftalmología, then went to an optometrist to order the glasses. That could have been my error :(

  2. My new progressive lens from a local store haven’t worked well, so looking at ordering from U.S.-based online stores Zenni Optical or eyebuydirect.com. Does Mexico charge import duties & taxes on prescription eyeglasses shipped from the U.S.? And do these online stores add import duties & taxes, or do I pay to the shipper?

I realize Costco in Guadalajara is a recommended option for eyeglasses, but I don’t have Costco membership.

It is cleaned and adjusted.  Cost about $100 for someone to come out from GDL and do it.

Given the cost of propane now, still quite cost effective.  We can go over a year on our 1000 liter tank.

Is the inside of the tank cleaned? If so, one would need to empty the tank. And what's adjusted?

In any case  it will be best to fill before April 10th   The odds are there will be an increase after that date.

Propane prices are impacted by crude oil prices and since start of the war in Ukraine, propane prices have gone up each week. And I believe, tho not certain, Mexico gets much of its propane from the U.S. Why do think there will be another jump after April 10th? Is it b/c summer driving season will cause crude oil prices to increase?

  5. When I first moved here 3+ yrs. ago, "bobos" seemed common only during rainy season. Since last November, they seem to come out every couple of weeks, including last week. Is this unusual? Any reason why there are so many outside rainy season? And what is the English (or scientific) name for these little critters?

There is a difference between INCOME and sales of houses. In the US, the sale of a home is reported on a 1099-S. Sale of a home in Mexico does not result in a 1099-S. Nothing is reported to the IRS. ...

Mostlylost already quoted from H&R Block's website for U.S. expats. Hopefully, H&R Block knows a thing or two or more about taxes. See this website:

U.S. capital gains tax on selling overseas property

When you sell property or real estate in the U.S. you need to report it and you may end up owing a capital gains tax. The same is true if sell overseas property. The U.S. is one of only a few countries that taxes you on worldwide income — and gains made from foreign property sales are considered foreign income.

That means it doesn’t matter if the real estate you sold is in Austin, Texas or Auckland, New Zealand — you still have an obligation to report the gains you made on the sale. ...

  7. What is the impact of having stone veneer on the inside walls of a house here Lakeside? The walls are brick and the stone veneers would be in the living room and bedrooms. Does it make a room feel colder in the cooler months of Nov-Jan? Or does the thermal mass (the ability of a material to absorb, store and release heat) of the stone veneer make it feel warmer inside in the cooler months? what about in the hotter months of Apr-May: cooler or warmer? Thanks.

You need an appointment and payment must be made within 72 hours of making the appointment.  You then enter the folio number to complete it.  Print it as it must be shown.

Are U.S. credit or debit cards accepted for online payment? Thanks.

  9. My gardener is getting up in age and asked if he could bring his 15 y.o. grandson to help him. I want to make sure I comply with all laws in this situation. I'd pay the grandson the same wage. The work would happen outside school hours. And I checked Mexico's labor laws, and appears if a minor if 15 y.o., its legal to work as long as parents provide written permission. Any issues with this situation? Anything I need to be aware of?

  10. Anyone get a Covid vaccine booster in Chula Vista, CA recently? Is showing my passport as ID and vaccine card sufficient? I had my initial Covid vaccine in Texas and my passport was sufficient as ID. Want to check if it’s the same for California, right across from Tijuana. Anything else to be aware of? Thanks.

  11. I did a quick search and found this:

     Does TextNow Support Verification Codes?
Some services do not support TextNow numbers for verification or for setting up 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication). If you're having trouble receiving a receive verification code (or short codes) please reach out to that company's support and verify if they support TextNow.

  12. Thanks for the info. Does Textnow provide a VoIP number or a regular cell phone number? My U.S. bank won't send 2-factor authentication text messages to VoIP numbers anymore. You mentioned Textnow charges a "$4.99 activation fee (a sim card that you now need to pop into a cell phone, which is a one-time operation to register your device / account, and you can ditch it after)." So appears they may provide a regular cell# with the SIM, but unsure how it works after you ditch the SIM?? Does it convert to VoIP or can a regular cell# work without the SIM card?

    Fongo appears to be VoIP.

Texas doesn’t care where you are from. We had our reservation form. They didn’t even ask for Id.

Maybe they didn't check, but the requirement starting Nov 8th for non-US citizens is to show proof of vaccination. See https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/ea/requirements-for-air-travelers-to-the-us.html :

Effective November 8, 2021, all non-immigrant, non-citizen air travelers to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to the United States.

For land border access requirement, see https://www.dhs.gov/news/2021/10/29/frequently-asked-questions-guidance-travelers-enter-us :

...non-citizen travelers will be permitted to enter the U.S. through a land border or ferry terminal for a non-essential reason (i.e., tourism), provided they are fully vaccinated and can present proof of COVID-19 vaccination status.
