Best to look up all meds you are prescribed here. I was prescribed an anti-inflammatory by a neurologist,  that has been banned in Europe, as it caused spontaneous heart attacks in people who in some cases, had no history of heart problems. I don't take anything without doing my own research.

I am glad you brought this up. It isn't very hard to look up your medication even before getting it.  Also be careful of the pharmacies offering huge discounts. My spouse likes to use them and I do not. Anyway he went and picked up a medication for me and I noted it looked different but thought it was another generic until I looked on the box carefully. It was an antihypertensive. First I have low blood pressure and secondly I already take a low dose antihypertensive for an irregular heart rhythm

I was so dizzy, weak etc.....all symptoms of HYPO tension.

I was also told that pharmacies were suppose to have a doctor on board. Does anyone know if that is true.?

  2. I would like to respectfully disagree that many of the doctors are scam artists. Personally I have found that some are simply incompetent. Not necessarily on purpose but they just have not had the training or experience. They are anxious to begin to practice and sometimes do not know what they do not know. Absolutely agree about second opinions. I am going to have one myself.

Now a LITTLE PLUG .....IT IS NURSES WEEK                                                       SAVED MANY A DOCTORS hide

Lisa Jorgensen also has a very large mailing list, gringohombre, and  I and several friends of mine have no idea how we got on her mailing list.. She targets many of us with very appealing emails suggesting we go to her Chapala Reporter Webpage which is very well written and it suggests that we subscribe to the Chapala Reporter for only $45 US per year.

Now I am not sure what the Chapala Reporter is but I know it is not a weekly publication and when it does come out I understand it has several articles written by her, but apparently only a few pages of print

Now the Guadalajara Reporter only charges $30 per year for an online subscription. The paper usually has 28 to 32 pages and on occasions 36 pages and it comes out weekly. As I said above, Lisa's Chapala Reporter is not a weekly publication and she sends out not 32 pages but an article or two at some unknown frequency.

So she is also targeting many who do not have Facebook accounts. I would love to hear from someone how much she puts out and with what frequency. The last time I saw Lisa, I said I would love to pay 50 pesos for a copy of her publication. She simply smiled, did not answer, and walked away.

Maybe her email list is long because if you go back to the archives, you will see another whole LJ saga. When she arrived, she made a huge deal she was an investigative reporter , ( check her credential) Anyway she was going to clean up all the corruption here and you would get the TRUTH!!!!!

Really blew her own horn. She wrote a book after being here a very short time  justifying that she felt someone new  (herself) would know best what newbies needed to now. Well if you want the details, try searching them on this board.

She was right about newbies in a new country needing to learn the ropes and just how far she could go. Got herself in a legal mess with the wrong people and some people wanted her deported. SOOOO  suddenly her publication vaporized as did her later endeavors such as selling clothes, Well now she is back. Someone should investigate her never reimbursing her first subscribers when she took her hiatus.  So the champion of truth  isn't quite as honest as she pretends, Yes I wrote 2X and nada.

BTW   I have some experience with publications......the only time you put in a useless survey about doctors is when one cannot find or have any knowledge about quality subjects

  4. I agree Dr, @ Ajijic charge less. But almost every  generalist md I have gone to charges 600-700p.  Specialists charge more and even more if you get an EKG or some other procedure.

1400p seems pretty high unless you had a procedure performed.

  5. There is also Dr. Garcia  and Dr. Leon.  The doctor at Ajijic Hospital Clinic is Drs. Hernendez ( father and son)   Dr. Lastra

Dr. Lupita is with Integrity Clinic.  All speak English,      The hardest part for new people here is that you will hear positives and negative remarks about all of them.  You almost have to try one that you hear the most positives and see how it fits.  Most charge 400-600p a visit .Most on the high end.

Ask question, don't be afraid, it is your body.  Does the doctor look annoyed when you ask for an explanation? Do you get a satisfactory answer. Are you being rushed?  does the dr. make eye contact? Help in any way if you have to go to Quad for a referral, ? Sometimes you can just tell a compassionate doctor. Always look up your medications.  Ask what you should do if you need a doctor in the middle of the night.

  6. To all of you who posted advice. I have received news tonight that is extremely troubling news, first it is quite possible we have been scammed out of mucho $$$$  USD. Secondly if we had sold the house with the idea we were just waiting, we could have had some big legal problems.  We did go to a notario and a lawyer. The notario recommended this  facilitator.

One of our neighbors gave us the information to check in Guad. which we will if the place is open.  This is really upsetting. I will keep you posted. We will share everything we learned as painful as it is, so no one else gets scammed.

No  Jay Schall we did not get a number, no one told us to expect one.  I guess you could say we were naïve, but going to a lawyer and notario we thought was the right approach.

cedros  There are limits on what you can do on federal land. Actually there are 3 levels of concession with various restrictions and allowances.

  7. I am sorry, I didn't mean buy it. I know I cannot. All I want to do is lease it . A neighbor , who I know does not have concession rights, is preparing to build something on it. Claims he has permission but I know that isn't true.

Thank you for your responses, even if they are discouraging.

  8. If there is an engineer reading this board, I would appreciate your input.  I heard, I repeat heard that the many many  traffic lights which cycle on and off all day along carretera  need the correct voltage.  Many appliance manufacturers know that voltage is different in other countries. So they developed circuitry to hand a wide variation.  The LCD lights in these traffic lights cannot handle these LCD's.  So either the lights need to change or the circuitry.  I think this is a very dangerous situation, especially for visitors.  So here we are at Pranza, all cars stopped because they cannot see that one little light ( if working) on the corner.  Please  don't use the hackneyed phase " this is Mexico". We expats exacerbate the problem, maybe someone could come up with a solution.

  9. If anyone one can offer some about the access of renting federal zone land, it would be much appreciated.

We are in the process of doing this  and have been for many many months. It has also cost a great deal of USD. The person was recommended by a notario and all we know is that the name on the concession property has not paid about 8 years back taxes. So we had to pay that plus surveyors and layers of people. Now it has been almost 3 months and we were told any time now. That has changed to well maybe a year and there is still more to pay.  We are hoping there is someway to speed this up.

It really would help . If you want to PM me that is fine.  Please no questions why we want it or any snarky remarks.  We are just asking for advice.

Even less interesting.  I tip our garbage men.  It is very small tip but with the daily service we get here, it is not asking too much.

You are right about that, a lot less interesting.  With your unkind statements  trying to put me down.....you have gone way off topic.  . I said it was just a side bar and you both made it an issue .Did you want to start another posting Tiny and bmh or be more productive and help the poster.?

What has a taxi ride in New Jersey got to do with a taxi ride in Ajijic Mexico.. ?

The newbies arriving here are bringing their bad habits with them from NOB.  Taxi drivers in Mexico don't expect a tip... Unless they do something extra for you...

If I was charged 600 peso for a ride to the airport I wouldn't be giving a tip...

Telsz4.......As I said it was just a side bar. I thought an interesting contrast. Sorry that went over your head.

Some people get so bent out of shape here. Please read carefully what I have said:

Those who complain that Dr. Candy was not the one who did their teeth cleaning simply are out of touch with reality. Again after all these years in the "real world" I have never had my teeth cleaned by the dentist whose name is on the door. Now, I am not saying that this is always the case, but as others on this thread have said this is a virtual reality.

Do not blame the dentist if you get a technician, hygienist or whatever you want to call them if you do not ask specifically for the dentist to do the job. The Standard Operational Procedure both here and NOB is as stated. And why question Dr. Candy's brother;s credentials when I am sure you do not know what you are talking about?

His credentials are that he is a dental student. I have no idea how dental students are supervised with procedures. Perhaps a word to Dra. Candy would help. Unless someone ...tactfully ....says something, she will never know. And he will never improve. Because dentists routinely clean teeth here, it is surprising when the dentist doesn't do them. I cannot remember ever having to ask for the dentist to do them.   I asked a dentist here why they do the cleaning and not a technician or hygienist and was told because there are too many dentists.

Angus, the poster has a legitimate question. The person wants to know if others feel as (he..she) does. Isn't that the purpose of this forum to inform, get ideas and suggestions?  This is not the first time you have tried to make something turn nasty and to bring attention to yourself and not offer anything constructive.  There are some legitimate concerns here. I have been here over 10 yrs. and definitely seen  changes. Some are good, like more entertainment, better restaurants, and specialty programs like children's art and language  more developed  ways to help the poo,.  incapacitated, abused etc.to name a few. I am not, however, blind to the very possible problems on the horizon. Water, especially if there is a dry season, will become a serious situation. Many energy sources will be strained. I totally agree that  most street are incredible bad if not dangerous as people try to avoid large and often deep pots holes. I know a street where rebar is poking up. Driving  up Madero to Sorriano is like being on a roller coaster. Prices will certainly go up.If these things are not important now with the Magic city drive, what will make them more a priority ?The question the poster asked was what was the net gain or loss of people. Is the net gain really a wash with people leaving? When people leave they often say they have illnesses, miss family or spouse or partner passes. The op is asking what is the percentage of people just having enough of the Mexican experience as well ? I would like to know that as well. Looking at two new hospitals, a many high rise apts and condos, some investors are expecting a mass influx of people. Have investors really looked or care what happens to infrastructure?

I suppose we could move out further west or east but in truth, the traffic might be better but so many things we enjoy now,  will not be available.

Maybe there are people on the board who have some answers to these concerns.

  15. He told me he was a dental student.  I think Dr. Candy is a very nice and personable. I was not pleased by the cleaning either. I, however , am not going to return to her practice and I intend on telling her why. Not in anger but if it were me, I would want to know. People often get upset and the person or persons never know why .I was in a great deal of pain when I saw her. It was x-rayed.  She told me I had a crack in the tooth but the oral surgeon looked at the  xray and said you have a massive infection. Yes, the tooth was pulled and no doubt that, it had destroyed the roots.

I then had to have 8 caps in the front because something was causing my dentin to dissolve.  First the 4 front were straight across so looked very fake . I did ask and she filed the side ones down. There was a crust like substance on the top each tooth. It could not be removed and the gum never came down to cover it as I was told it would. Lastly one of the 2 front teeth started to push out so they looked uneven  and felt slightly loose. The tooth on the left side near the front could be pulled out manually. A black spot developed on one and could not be removed with brushing.

I went 4 times to get a bite guard and it never fit.  I did have a second and third opinion and was  x-rayed every which way and was told it would have to be done all over again. I had something called leaking from 2 teeth and showed me the residue, the black spot was a bubble and on the top was the dental adhesive. Yes my front tooth was moving out in front of the other. I was told I could wait a few months but at the end of the year , if I didn't have it redone, I would have some big dental problems. Now one could say the doctor just wanted money so told me these things, but two dentists? Like I said, as a person I really like Candy. Perhaps she needs a little more professional guidance before taking on these sort of procedures.
