Unless St. Remy's has gotten better, it would not be my first choice right now. It certainly would have been my first choice when they were at Tres Leones... bar none. New location is divine but the food? meh.

Go Bistro would be my choice... ask about quiet romantic music and dancing... or just holding hands.

In the end, it doesn't matter where you go because you have each other... tacos at a road side stand would taste divine. Congratulations on your 50th Wedding Anniversary.

In light of Ferret's comments, I probably should clarify that it has been 3 years since I last dined at St. Remy's.  It was an exceptional, fine-dining experience at the time, though I can't really speak to what the restaurant is like today.

  2. Hmm, the local place that immediately comes to my mind is St. Rémy du Lac -- though La Mision Restaurante and Armando's Hideaway might also offer what you are seeking.

However, if I were in your shoes, I'd take my bride of 50 years to one of the several top-end restaurants in Guadalajara.  You can hire a driver for the evening to take you there and back, or better yet, stay the night in a fancy hotel.  After all, you did say cost was no object :).

Everything quite bland when we tried it Wednesday.  The butter chicken which is not a spicy dish by any stretch of one's imagination, was oddly sweet.  Even the chutney had no kick to it.  Guess we should have tried it before they dumbed it down.  Also the temperature heat was on the lukewarm side.

Right now if you want a properly spiced Indian meal in town, go to Gossips and order their biryani.  It is divine.

I completely concur with your assessment, Bisbee Gal, and it is unlikely that I will return.

On the other hand, I do wish the proprietor well, as he is clearly earnest, the food is at least fresh tasting, the serving portions are generous, and the meal prices are more than reasonable.  If his gringo-ized recipes find favor with the local customer base -- and it seems that they have -- I say welcome to the restaurant scene and more power to him.

I greatly appreciate all of the responses.

Concerning the advice to select the hospital of the Lakeside-attending physician’s referral, I think this is logical IF you have a "trusted" physician making the referral.  However, based on an experience I had with a recommended local physician last summer, I must admit I am no longer so trusting.  It’s a long story, but in a nutshell, acting on the Lakeside physician’s referral upon seeing her about some painful breathing episodes, I found myself unnecessarily (in my opinion) admitted to Hospital San Javier and racking up USD 2,000 in questionable charges that my health insurance company has so far balked at reimbursing me.

I simply want to be better prepared for my stay this summer by knowing and working within my insurance plan’s network of affiliated hospitals in the highly unlikely event of my encountering some sort of medical emergency.

Again, many thanks for everyone's input.

  5. My U.S. health insurance provider has arrangements with the following Guadalajara Hospitals for covered, inpatient medical care:

    -- Hospital Bernardette

    -- Hospital Mexico Americano

    -- Hospital Santa Maria Chapalita

    -- Hospital Terranova, S.A.

In the highly unlikely event I may require hospitalization for a medical emergency while residing in Ajijic this summer, I'm thinking I probably should know in advance which of these hospitals I would choose.  Unfortunately, I haven't a clue.

For anyone with insights into these hospitals, I greatly would welcome your thoughts as to which one of these four facilities is best equipped to handle emergencies and provide top-notch medical care.  Conversely, I'm wondering if there are any hospitals on this list that should best be avoided?

    Many thanks.
