  1. But does it offer the antigen test or antibody? For entering the US, per the CDC direction the test must be an antigen or PCR. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html Here is the relevant section
  2. I have been uncertain by the different acronyms of tests. So I went to the authority for what is accepted for my upcoming flight into the US. Quoting the CDC notice (March 2 2021 update) for travel into the US: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html
  3. Yes, I got that email too as I'm in RC. It took a while for me to know exactly what "Go fed" meant. I looked back at the Spanish and decided a better way of saying "acudir alimentado" in English is go after eating or arrive with food in your stomach. I think they don't want people taking the vaccine on an empty stomach. That message didn't come through when I read "Go fed" but other folks may have gotten it. Of course they could just be warning you that it is going to be a long time standing in line. Certainly bring a sunbrella and/or hat and fan. I am so glad they are using that hospital as it has space to deal with the crowd better than other locations.
  4. I hear so many people jumping for joy over this vaccine and I am arguing with other friends who refuse to get any vaccine. Wow, everyone is just moving in all sorts of directions. For me, I agree that I will not take a vaccine from China or Russia or anywhere else that has not been vetted by either the European, US, or WHO medical teams. Sputnik V got an article written but that doesn't mean it had a medical review of it's trials and official filings. I and another friends have hunted all over the internet for information on Sinovac and there is none. One of my dearest friends that would be happy to be first to take the Sinovac says it is 86% effective. She doesn't understand that EFFICACY means NOTHING regarding the side effects, long-term impact on your health, how the shot may react if you are on other medication or have health conditions, and many other factors. If anyone has a reliable source (e.g. the CDC, FDA, WHO or similar entity) about Sinovac please share the link. Finally a comment on efficacy. You can't compare efficacy ratings from one vaccine to the other as they use different methodology and are including different people in the statements. Efficacy does indicate many don't hospitalized or suffer severe reactions. But it is not a statement about side-effects, complications, and anything else that I need to know about prior to have it put into my body.
  5. I had the same question as I'll be flying out next Sunday. But then I read the fine print on my airline requirements. They require antigen test which takes hours of processing. So I'm going to find a lab in my community that will do it. So if you are wanting a test because you are flying out, be sure and read the airline requirements. My specifically said The article in TGR this week about the JLN Lab that opened at Soriana's parking lot specifically says to check with your airline to be sure they will accept the JLN Lab test. This may be because their RT-PCR is a nose and throat swab and not a blood test. Typically even the RT-PCR (with nose and throat swab) will take several hours to get a result. So I can't see how the test site at the airport is providing antigen tests.
  6. I don't know any business that functions as it did 30 or 40 years ago. So your comment makes no sense. Businesses that didn't change are no longer with us. I have found value in smaller stores who respond to the more specific needs of their customers. So there is value in them. We should make sure they survive. I am not anti-big box. You are arguing things I don't propose. I'll go to your first point that competition has made things better. Walmart would love to remove ALL competition. If you want to shop at Walmart that is your choice. I have closes friends who know my feelings and tell me when they go there. My mother has me take her to Walmart (in the US) when I visit her and I do that. I don't know why you feel the need to defend Walmart. They have plenty of revenue and resources to survive a downturn that last more than a year. Most of the local privately owned shops do not have that. This is why I am making my point. We need to help locally owned and operated businesses survive. We will all benefit from them. I will disclose that I own index stock that has Walmart US and other MX investments that has Walmart Mexico. So I benefit from them being successful. I don't want them to fail but I want them to have strong, vibrant competition. Finally, a Mexican friend who heard I went to a Walmart owned store in Joco told me how terrible they are in the treatment of their employees. So your statement about how Mexicans "hate" Walmart fails. You may know 3 and I know 2. Don't generalize an entire people. We are all people who make decisions based on our experience, our wants, and what is available to us. So saying that Mexicans want local owners out of business is insulting to everyone. I hope we all at some level want the best world we can have. I regret that social media, including this chat room, is making that harder to achieve. Zuckerberg is laughing all the way to the bank at the people who have helped him become a zillionaire by allowing him to sell profiles on what motivates them.
  7. You continue to argue that Walmart Mexico is not Walmart US but many of us don't shop at Walmart Mexico because it is a chain that displaces smaller stores that keep the profit in the community rather than sent it to Mexico City or Guadalajara. This is the real harm that Walmart does. I don't care who owns it as long as they keep putting a strain or putting out of business the locally owned stores. Shopping at these locally owned stores who are more responsive to the needs and requests of the local community is CRITICAL right now. Please don't ignor the harm Walmart Mexico does to other stores in the community on top of the coronavirus precautions. Shop local merchants and keep them alive. Walmart has plenty of resources from the stores they've already killed off. Everyone who cares about local economies should do all they can to support locally owned stores right now.
  8. I live in Raquet Club and have a carport and terrace where bats will gather for nighttime picnics unless I leave a light on. It doesn't need to be all that bright a light either. They'll leave seeds and a bit of droppings on the floor in a darker part of each of these places. On the terrace, it is one particular dark corner so I just put a night light to shine there and that is enough. The carport has a motion sensitive light that detects them gather in a corner. I don't know where they live but they sure do enjoy some fruit around here. I'm glad they are here and see them flying just after dusk sometimes. I just don't want them messing up my terrace or carport.
  9. Yes, I am generalizing and saying that large corporations will come out of this crisis more easily than the smaller businesses that manage to survive. Just look at what happened when the US gave loans to small businesses and multi-million dollar corporations ended up getting large portions of the money to the extent that it ran out of funding. When it was exposed how broken the US process was, some gave it back but it just reveals how much easier it is for the big guys to get help. The smaller the business, the more help is needed right now and the harder it is to get. That is exactly why I am calling on people to support the local Mexican owned stores whenever possible instead of sending more money to US owned corporations. It is a critical time and these smaller stores need our help to survive. They are the sources of livelihood for many families. Walmart staff will be paid their small salary even if you don't go there but these smaller stores will only survive if we shop there. If you call that "negativity" toward large corporations that have used their power to crush the smaller stores for years, then you have that right term. I see it as wanting local families and their businesses to survive because I love this community and want it to be strong and survive. But that is not the only reason why I don't buy my vegetables at Walmart. The quality of them is nothing like as fresh and flavorful as I get at the local markets. Try it and see for yourself.
  10. Many of us are here as Fakebook doesn't really moderate but allows most any post that will increase money into Zuc's pocket. So thank you MOD 5 for doing your job and thank you kam for making a point. We aren't "afraid of" or hate Fakebook, we just see it as an untrustworthy, unreliable pile of crap with a layer of friends, family, and cat videos on top to cover the stench and entice you into the first few bites.
  11. Yes, I've tried one. You need one designed for the specific style of keyboard you have as they slip over the entire keyboard. You can get all sorts of colors and languages. They even make glow in the dark. I ended up taking the one I had off as it is silicon and slowed my fingers down as I was typing. It may work well for a hunt and peck typist. The added benefit to having it on your keys is that any debris is kept from going in between the keys. You can easily remove and clean it and then put it back on.
  12. Married filling jointly fall into #1 as we get a small refund since we overpay our taxes. We've registered an e-deposit for many years to the same US account. On 15-April we got a deposit. I've decided that since the rump in the White House put his name on my money before he sent it back to me, I'd donate it to local charities here in Mexico and to https://victoryfund.org/ as they've shown success in supporting races that win.
  13. They make stickers that you can put on the keyboard, peel and stick. I think originally for keys that wear off but you can cover the Spanish keys with the English once you change the language. Many keys will not need to be covered as they are the same. I had thought of doing this but since I don't look at the keys when typing have not bothered. For a hunt & peck person it may be worth it.
  14. Thank you for posting this as I don't use Fakebook
  15. We all have values that we express when shopping. I find the mom & pop stores 1. are safer to visit as they tend to better at controlling COVID-19 and have less traffic than Wal-mart 2. offer better value 3. offer better product quality 4. generally treat employees better 5. benefit the local community as the profits stay here 6. offer better service including special orders 7. connect me to local community in unique ways I chose to live in Mexico in large part because of the wonderful people here. I want the community to be successful. I want to know this community better. It does hurt the local economy and the families that live here when we shop at Wal-mart instead of the locally owned mom & pop stores. You can claim those of us who have investments or pension benefit from Walmart shoppers going there. To me that is someone who has wealth being tone deaf to the impact of the actions on the community they live in. You have every right to come and live here for far less than you would in the US. But please realize our presence has caused many Mexicans to be priced out of living here. The LEAST we can do is support the local economy in ways that we can such as supporting the locally owned and operated businesses.
  16. Henry Ford insisted on paying his employees well and lifted them out of poverty into a higher standard of living. He insisted they be able to own the cars they were building. Rather than lifting up, Walmart is pushing the standard lower so that the merchandise in the stores is of lower quality. We all suffer from making the service and products cheaper. Even if we don't shop at Walmart. But the initial appeal is that the prices are so low. What many don't realize is that the quality is poorer. I may pay the same price but for better quality because I go to several different places and find the better product. I isn't easy or "one stop" but I'm not sending money to the wealthiest family in the Americas but supporting local mom and pop stores and their suppliers.
  17. I think both are true, that Walmart underpays and under-rewards employees in the US and Mexico. That is based on what I have read and what I have been told by Mexican residents and most specifically by an employee of Guadalajara Pharmacia and a teacher who has had several conversations with me about how employees are treated by various employers. I know this is anecdotal. If you step back and think about the "flow of money" you'll realize that someone who owns a mom and pop store here will keep the money HERE as they pay for supplies and staff as well as rent and overhead. But if the Waltons own the business, the wealth is going to flow up to the wealthiest family in the Americas. So I believe my friend who has told me that people working at Walmart owned businesses don't make as much as those working at other businesses or those who own their own business.
  18. You could have just written "The Waltons are the richest family in America thanks to their ironclad control over the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart" or I hart zillionaires. Anyone going to Walmart instead of mom and pop stores is sending money to the wealthiest family in the US instead of supporting local families and businesses. I don't see how anyone can disagree with that fact. If this makes you feel shame for how you spend your money, I don't apologize. I only ask that you listen to the shame and change your behavior. Please stop supporting multinational corporations who do not support local communities. I know it is easy to go to the big stores but if you take the months of exploration that it requires you'll find a whole world of far greater value than Walmart has to offer.
  19. Please consider going to mom & pop stores rather than Walmart. First, as has been shown here, you are entering a space where there are thousands of people who have little regard for health procedures. Do you think disinfecting of the carts, aisles, registers at Walmart is effectively done? You are endangering yourself and others. Besides that Walmart does not treat their employees well in regard to pay or benefits. Finally, Mom & Pop stores keep more of the profits here locally to help the local economy and local families. They've really been hurt by the pandemic and need our help now more than ever. The gazillionaires of the Walton family don't need your money nearly as much as these local family and business do. It may require you to hunt but you can find ANYTHING at a local store that you need and it will be of as good or better quality and at or a better price than you'd get at W. If you keep going to local businesses and develop relationships you can even get special orders and things you'd never get at Walmart. But I've seen the crap produce they sell in Walmart and it is very bad and far below the quality you can get in local markets. You have to look and find the right ones. Stop sending your money to US business interest that do are harming the local Mexican economy, please.
  20. Walmart has killed so many mom and pop stores in the area, why are you going there? You don't like having low-paid employees without masks or gloves touching money from a few hundred people and then grabbing your purchase and scanning it? You reap what you sow. Why have you been supporting Walmart for years and just now discover that they are irresponsible and dangerous? They've made their money and now that they've put so many smaller businesses out of business you have little choice. So you've just got to live with it or ,make the choose not go to Walmart and find what you need in the few places that are left. Help them by shopping there and make them stronger. You might even get to know the owner as he/she rings up your purchase and talks about the child who is in University.
  21. Utilities are considered essential services and so TelMex should be open. We need to stop by and deal with a billing issue so we'll try it tomorrow.
  22. I've been tracking the temperature in and out of the house as I'm getting ready to install UV/Heat film on the windows that are hit very hard for hours by the afternoon sun. One meter above my roof it has been 37.0 every day for the last several days. Usually around 2 or 3 PM. On my terrace it has been 28.3 on one day ONLY but most days it is 29.5 (give or take a tenth) every day for a week. Last Friday it was 30.4 on the terrace. This reading is from a gauge that is in the shade against a wall that does not get direct sun so it is the temperature of the air. I live in the Raquet Club.
  23. I ended up calling them and found that YES, they are open and their hours are 9-9. At Costco they are sanitizing their registers often and are using social distancing for their lines. The carts are so big just staying a cart length away works well. They only allow two people to approach the register, one being checked out and the other putting their stuff on the belt. The lines are long as they have closed most registers to keep people from getting too close to each other.
  24. Does anyone know if the Home Depot on Lopez Mateos is open or any other HD in Guadalajara? Thx
