  1. I would not trust Mexico's version of an FDIC.  I had invested in a GEO bond, one of the largest low income builders in MX.  I was told they were very safe.  That is until Pena Nieto  came into office and canned GEO for a different low income builder.

I lost everything in that GEO bond since they subsequently went bankrupt..

The good news is you can currently earn about 11% on your money here.  They automatically take out the MX Federal tax from that income.  I am not sure what the current tax rate is.  I believe it is set by the Banco de Mexico  ( their version of the U.S. Federal Reserve)

Does anyone know what the current MX Federal tax rate is on those savings accounts?

  2. Check out Cocinart.   They are offering dining in or carry out for Dec. 24th and 31st at reasonable prices!

That is what I am doing, carry out from there.

I KNOW it is not open Christmas day, so no need for correction from the web board folks.

Have a Happy and Healthy Holiday !

  3. Well, like all insurance companies tend to do.  Mapfre pulled a "bait and switch".  Easy to hate insurance companies.

When I went to finalize things, Mapfre came back with a final quote yesterday which was 18% higher than their last one three weeks ago.

I said forget it and I am staying with Parker and HDI.  At least, they are less likely to pull a bait and switch on you, in my 6 yrs with them.

  4. Any comments on the difference between Dr. Alvaro Gonzales Ross and Dr.  Jose Manuel Gonzalez Gonzalez?  I notice one is a orthopefic and the latter is a neurosurgeon.

I hope the "mess mentioned at San Antonio Hospital" was not from Dr. Alvaro Gonzales Ross.  My problem is this is a follow up problem from stenosis surgery from another neurosurgeon in Guad about 5 yrs ago.

I am afraid that I am in need of one of them as soon as possible.

  5. Actually, Daniel is right next door to the papeleria at 29A Hidalgo -- ring the buzzer on the door and you have to go up a couple of flights of stairs.

He is between the papeleria and the Thai restaurant.

The best jeweler in Ajijic  and very reasonable !!

  6. Even by US standards, a claim or estimate done on June 21st is not a long time.

I was a bit surprised by SunFan's comments.  This is the real world, Mexico is part of the world the last I checked.  Don't expect banks or insurance companies to be nice or easy to deal with.   Look at the States --- it is all the same and maybe worse in some countries compared to others.

Don't expect such companies to take on the nice features or mores of a country or its people.  They are all out for profit.   Or, if you are cynical enough, you can say ..... " they all suck, they just vary by degrees!"

That is the sad truth !

  7. I have complete confidence in the broker who provided me the quote.

I also just pursued and received a personal experience from  her.  She was driving to Guad through Joco and was hit by a delivery truck.  She called and her Mapfre adjuster came out from Guad and took care of the incident without any issues.  The adjuster issue is what I had been concerned about and this sounds favorable to me.

Again, also being quoted for more coverage for less money (premium) than I received for the same coverage from Parker.

    Thank you Mostlylost.

  8. This is what I get when I google Mapfre:

Mapfre Insurance has received strong ratings and reviews across multiple sites. On Trustpilot, out of 3,500+ reviews, Mapfre received a rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars. It has also received an A+ rating from the BBB, and an A rating from AM Best, which demonstrates its ability to write out claims.Jun 9, 2023

HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE HAS HAD EXPERIENCE WITH MAPFRE HERE   !!

I have not had a bad experience with Parker, just looking for reputable alternatives.  I can get  more coverage at less premium with MAPFRE.

However, I am more concerned about the service from them when needed.  Thank you.

  9. Hi:

I have a Mexican friend who sells different types of insurance and investments products. She  is encouraging me sign up for Mapfre Car insurance. She states they respond the same as the others ( Qualitas, HDI, etc. ) to car accidents.

Does anyone have any experience with them:  good , bad or otherwise?

As an Expat, I want to make sure I am well represented at any accident and well served if I have a claim or some other need.

I currently am with Parker.  Have had no claims or complaints, other than my older car continues to face higher premiums every year ( feel like they have learned from U.S. inurance companies to just keep raising premiums, despite driving an older car every year).

I would appreciate anyone's experience with them!  Thank you.

  10. When in doubt, go to El Mediterraneo in Riberas ( mountain side, just before Pemex on opposite side) for great thin pizza!  The owner is from Rome, Italy.

They are closed on Sunday and Mondays

  11. That is great about the Recycling Center taking them.  We all should take advantage of that facility.

Also, Luis Algarin at Lakeside Computers sometimes takes old computers off people's hands.  He is near Pancho's in Riberas ( about 3 doors down).  Phone is 332-340-7501.
