  1. Is TotalPlay running their own fiber optic lines or leasing from iLox or another party who has the infrastructure already built?
  2. Has anyone come across Stressless or even a knock off in the Guadalajara area? We have a couple of these lovely chairs in the US and are considering our options to either get them down here or buy a couple for here lakeside. While expensive, these are easily the best pieces of furniture we have owned.
  3. I am not sure why they only pulled one meter. Pulling any makes no sense either. Ultimately, we had the old owner of the house call CFE for a new service install in his name. To do so, one doesn’t need any documentation, only a CURP. It wasn’t quick and took 12 days from when we called. We pulled power off the other unit that we own via an extension cord. Not ideal but it was fine to be able to keep the fridge going and other basics. Of note, for someone running into this problem or similar where you are trying to change the name on the CFE account: Trying to do the process in person is a bit of a pain. You need to provide a pile of paperwork. Over the phone you only need your CURP number, and their is no documents to present etc.... Once we get our residency, we will get the accounts into our name, but will just do it over the phone. The CURP has some magic powers that an escritura, predial, passports, someone can’t match. Owning the home is not of consequence, but just having a CURP to tie to the account seems like the golden ticket with the CFE protocols.
  4. Hi All - Looking for help with a CFE problem that we are having. We are trying to change the account number with CFE. On going down to the CFE office (3 weeks ago) with all of the necessary paperwork, we were given new account numbers. A couple days later, someone from the office called and said that we needed the CURP number (the citizen or resident number) to complete the process. We thought this was weird since we know that many folks buy homes here on tourist visas and are slower to get their residency than us. At any rate, we figured that was not problem, and we told them that that we would have the CURP in a couple months after we do the paperwork for residency in April. A couple weeks ago, a CFE person came and pulled both meters. We caught him before he left, and he made a call and then put them back. Same thing happened the next week. Y Yesterday, however, one of the meters got pulled down when we were not here. We question the necessity of the CURP, since plenty of folks buy homes on tourist visas and are slower than us to change the account. Regardless, we need to get power back now (not in a couple months). Anyone have any guidance on solving this problem? My wife and I will head down to CFE this AM with the previous owner of our house (a Mexican friend).
  5. I do not know if this is true or not, but I was told recently that there is a service (presumably offered by a local lawyer) that takes a group of foreigners up to the Laredo consulate and assists them in getting the paperwork rolling on temporary and permanent resident visas. Since I had no luck getting the process started while back in the states in October/November (closest consulate appeared to be closed), I am interested in knowing if the above described service is actually available, and who orchestrates it, contact info, etc... Thanks in advance.
  6. Anyone have a massage practitioner recommendation? I am looking for someone in the style/anatomy knowledge of Erin Dixon. I have went to Erin periodically over the past 7 years, but she is not currently in practice. Thanks in advance.
  7. Heading up to the border soon, and was curious about the various options crossing at/or near the border at Laredo. Looking at https://bwt.cbp.gov/ it appears that just Bridge 2 and Colombia are currently open. Is the Colombia crossing preferred for some reason? I have see several folks mention using this. The ones through Nuevo Laredo (Bridge 2, for instance) seems like it would be a more direct path. I do not know about the traffic up there however. I have directions that include the Banjercito at the Colombia crossing. If Bridge 2 would be preferable, could someone tell me where the Banjercito is located near or en route to it? Thanks in advance!
  8. Chatting with an installer in January, he mentioned that they normally have two for the whole Ajijijc, -> Chapala area. At that time however, it was only him. The other installer had fell off a ladder and hurt his neck and back. This is referring to the guys actually getting service brought into the house and got it going. Do all routers have the ability to load a VPN? I have a Netgear N600 WNDR3700. We use Express VPN for our phones and computers, which has been good...but our current installation is limited to those devices.
  9. Have had iLox for a month and a half, and have been underwhelmed to say the least. Rarely speeds are above 30mbs - which is unfortunate, but the real problem has been the stability of the connection. It gets dropped a lot, losing a lot of calls, or slowing to a crawl. I jumped on the forum to post and see if anyone had similar issues and possible solutions, but this thread proved to be a good place to start. We have the HG6244C model modem as the poster above does. I did the same as another poster and pulled out the fibre optic connection at the modem, and blew out the plug and receptacle. Also, I hooked up an 8 year old Netgear router to the iLox modem as another poster in the thread has done. Flip flopping between the Netgear WiFi and the iLox WiFi and doing side by side speed tests with two computers...the old Netgear router has at least double the speed of the iLox WiFi router. We will see if the connection stabilizes over the next couple days.
  10. Sorry if this has been posted before...my search didn't bring up any results. I am looking for the names/contact info for folks who rent cars on a long-term basis (several months at a time). I know that there are multiple car rental agencies on the area that do short term rentals. We have used several with good results. At this point, however, we are looking for a long term rental. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks.
  11. Thanks! It is a tiny project (2min or less) PM sent!
  12. Anyone know where to buy a Dremel tool in the area?
  13. Interesting stuff. Thanks Chillin
  14. So basically what is sold as Cemento Blanco in the ferreterias? Seems simple enough. I have some of that around I had the entirety of my interior walls resurfaced a while ago when doing new electric. At the bottom of the walls that there was a sealer (rubbery in feel) that dripped down onto the floor. I am assuming that was something that was added to the cemento blanco? I should have mentioned that the above photo has been primed and painted, and therefore is white from that. Here are pre-painted photos. Sorry, I should have included this earlier. Coarse nylon brush? What would that look like?
  15. Can anyone give me some pointers with both tools and technique in doing a texture as shown? Pretty commonly found in the area. I realize that I could hire someone to do this, but I'd like to know how to do it myself. Thanks in advance!
  16. Does anyone know of a source in the Ajijic area to buy official Apple earbuds? Looking for lightning port. I have bought ones that were pretty accurate counterfit of the packaging and earbud...but fell apart in a couple days.
  17. Thanks Rick - Will probably get month to month for our time in the US. I would call the data speeds in the US as barely usable...even at 4G. The ping on speedtest.net will be around 280 ish and download speeds certainly under 1mbs. Regularly 3G and often E.
  18. I've been using Telcel as my only cell provider for a while now, rather than buying a monthly plan from Cricket (ATT) or Straightalk while up in the US. Telcel partners with T Mobile in the states. While this works OK for calls etc...it isn't so great for data use. When in the US, the data speed drops to crawl. It is the same whether I am in rural areas or large cities where T Mobile has great service. I am using an iPhone XR. My wife experiences the same...using an iPhone 6. Is anyone aware of a way to avoid this? Is there some type of cell service setting that needs to be changed? Thanks in advance!
  19. Could someone point me to a store that sells bakings pans, muffin tins, bread pans? My wife looked at Walmart, but either missed them or they didn't have them. Thanks
  20. Thanks again for the thoughts on this post. @AlongTheWay - I dropped a line your way via the messages here on the forum.
  21. Some great responses and intelligent words of warning. Thank you.
  22. Hello - my wife and I are entertaining the idea of living over in San Luis Soyatlan. We have been down in the Ajijic/San Antonio area for roughly 20 months cumulatively over 5 years. Love the area, but also note the increasing crowdedness and prices. Our Spanish is alright and we enjoy speaking Spanish. We are mid 40s. I am looking for comments on the following: Boat docking in San Luis Soyatlan & Boat docking in Ajijic or San Antonio. -Our gut feeling is that we would rather not have a car, and prefer bringing down a small boat..would rather run errands on weekly basis in Ajijic (rather than Jocotopec)if possible. We have lived on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala in the past (and enjoyed the boat rides...when the waves weren't coming over the front of the boat . ) Internet speed and reliability - we need the internet for work. Is iLox laying cable on that side of the lake as well? Are Telecable or Telmex available? I have heard that there is Telcel service - is this just a rumor? If anyone has speediest.net data, that is very helpful. As would reliability. Telcel Service - Is it decent? Property sales - Here in Ajijic and S.A., I notice that properties are sold both by realtors and direct sale (though my observation would tell me that there has been a decline in trato directo signs). In SLS, are most sales Trato Directo (this is fine, we don’t mind navigating the system)? We are not necessarily looking for a Fraccionamiento….but would not rule it out either. Any other experiential or anecdotes welcome. We are aware that the town has a more Mexican feel, not to rely on English…etc. Thanks in advance.
