  1. I suspect the Dr. has seen his fair share of hypochondriacs in his time. Not accusing you of being one but perhaps you reminded him of some. Just a thought since most people who had water with them would have made sure they brought it in if they had any thought of needing it before returning to their car. Or maybe he just had a bad day.

Good to know.  What is his hourly rate?

That approach is one I never used. If someone was recommended to me I showed them what I needed done, asked for a price, and unless I thought it was unreasonable I let them at it. Upon completion I  made a decision as to whether to keep using him/her. Most "jobs" we had were not major construction or super complicated. I was always happy to find someone who was dependable, knew basically what they were doing and charged me a fair rate for that, I always knew I wasn't getting the "Mexican Rate" but so what? If the job was done right and without any drama that was a win for me. YMMV

For years (40+) I’ve been seeing highway construction going on between Houston and the Rio Grande Valley at a steady non-stop pace.  The size and population of the RGV didn’t seem to warrant such a highway system. After the construction of the Pharr bridge it became obvious that long term plans are in play here.

  4. Remember one thing...you don't buy insurance to cover things that will just piss you off, small fire, minor water damage, minor injury to a guest or worker. You don't buy insurance for those things. You buy insurance for the rare, but it happens, when someone gets severely injured or killed. Many people look at the "odds" something will happen. The right way to look at it is if "X" happens will I just be pissed or will it put me in the poor house. If your answer is the latter you may want to consider insurance.

It’s the corporations that get the tax breaks but they don’t pass on their profits down to the ones in the bottom

The simple solution to that is to buy the stock of those corporations and sit back and enjoy the windfall. EZPZ

Exactly.  Se Renta signs are good

Just remember, those signs don't necessarily mean THAT house is for rent, just that info on a rental can be found at that house. Learned that the hard way.

P - i hope you weren't referring to me - i have no desire to defraud anyone - and the sun seems to be shining EVERYWHRE these days - I trust that a question on this chat space does not always get responses like yours - a simple question - a simple answer with no insuts would suffice

No insult to you was intended or made. lakeside7 perhaps yes. Don't just take my word for it but take it as part of your "education" into life in Mexico. My best wishes to you.

i just got a call from the insurance person and he said just what I thought - that I would just call the doctor's office and get an appt and pay out of pocket - the email was confusing but I am old and Hot so there you are -

Make sure you get a proper receipt showing you paid in cash, just in case that outfit gets embroiled in a fraud investigation.   BTW, how is the situation in Portland?

I too am confused ergo my question - it seems that Lakeside Medical REQUIRES an advantage plan in order to register for a doctgor  or at least that is what my email said -this wasn't a discussion with the cardiologist - it seems to be the way Lakeside works - you can't get to see a doctor without a plan   there is a JEFF who sells one month to one year plans that Lakeside does accept - I have a call into him but he has not returned it - I cancelled mY united health - at a cost of 72 a month - because I thought I read - perhaps mistakenly - that any of those plans ONLY cover ER and URGENT care - and not regular checkups etc - also I am not out of the country for a few months - I am here permanently - I kept medicare in case I did have some horrible thing happen - I then would fly direct to portland and use the medicare - seemed silly to pay for United if I couldn't use it here - anyway consufing is right - I will look for an american -canadians have a whole different system - who might have answers

If any Mexican doctor insists you must have a Medicare Advantage Plan in order to be treated...run, don't walk away from that situation. The last thing you need is to be involved with Medicare fraud.

I am "confused"..if you are able and willing to go the "pay as I need treatment" then there is no reason to have the type of discussion with the Cardiologist or any other specialist. Just have that CC ready or cash to cover the treatment.

Bye the why I think you should have thought twice about canceling  the Advantage insurance plan as it may have had the rider to cover you whilst out of the country for a few months. Many people at Lakeside use their Advantage Plans (illegally) here which is a personal decision and requires no comment's from would be purists or experts on this forum. We are all adults who some time suffer from senior moments!!!

Sorry l7 but it's fraud like that that causes all of our Medicare premiums to keep rising. I for one will call that out and you can put your "senior moments" where the sun don't shine!

You have clearly identified the "problem" when you mentioned...doesn't understand the culture....We and Mexicans can/do look at the same 'problem" and will then take a totally different path (on cost and time to complete) to reach the same goal. Added to that complexity is their desire "not to offend". This characteristic is best displayed at AGM's when the board has to make a contentious decision, they truly agonize on making a yes or no....... and so will talk and talk and talk hoping the Gringos will just give up and walk away, and then they can "table the motion" until the next meeting!

This applies not only to any Board of Directors but to personal relationships, a Mexican partner, wife, husband, or significant other.

I would suggest that whilst many of us can speak fluent Spanish, we do not "Think in Spanish". This talent/skill I have only found twice with a couple of Mexicans I have worked with. I have long learned that it is best to identify the  need/goal and then walk away..otherwise, I will immediately question the direction/way the task is being done....because I know my way is quicker and probably less costly! ( and most times it is!!)

Let me give you an example. Many years ago I was into the building and flipping houses. I am not sure what happens these days but back then when preparing the footing the Jeffe would order large rocks and a peon(s) would "spend hours" breaking them up ( just like the chain gangs on the side of the road in GA in the '50s). I would ask the Jeffe why not order the rocks of the right size..." The rocks cost more Senior"..really? but doesn't take long to build the house? In other examples, I noticed a peon cutting the branch/limb of a tree to shape and fit a sledgehammer handle that has broken. I am not sure how many hours it had taken him,  I immediately went to the hardware store and bought a handle, the cost of the handle was far less than the time the guy was spending witling  away this tree limb..."but I wanted to save you, money Senior"

Let me share with you all one "smart" idea I had that turned into a catastrophic mistake. Back "then" the norm was to construct the homes leaving the window size/space ready for the glass guy to come in and measure each single "hole". At that time there were no ready-made windows available until Home Depot came along. So in my wisdom, I decided it was going to be a cost-saving and quicker to buy ready-made windows and get the guys to make the holes to the size of the windows!. What a disaster, the first error.... where do you store this load of windows and not damage the glass panes. Then as good as the workers are... the slight variation's in the hole size required a lot of shimming/extra time etc, to install the "fixed size " window frames.

There is a balance that all visitors to a foreign country must have, Sadly I still try to think of myself as a Don Q and not sit down and read The Serenity Prayer. Good luck Nicklos I think you have great ideas but not "The Culture" to turn them into action

...or how about not leaving space for the electrical and plumbing conduits and pipes...so that a peon can spend hours chiseling it out later?

  12. I suspect it was 2002 when I had to go back to Houston for a week. I made my wife promise she would water everything at the B&B on the Sunday when we had no gardener as it had been super hot the end of May that year. Like the wonderful wife she is, she reported she spent close to 2 hours watering. That was American Memorial Day weekend. That night it poured in Ajijic and she didn't let me forget that. Rainy season started early that year so my guess is May 31 for a repeat of 20 years ago.

  13. The are some YouTube videos of people on the waiting list "moving" their location pin on the map slightly to be in an area where immediate order shipping is possible. Apparently that is the location you say you will be using it, not necessary to change the shipping address. Several people report that it worked fine at the original location. It's very helpful to full time RV'ers who can thus choose a camping spot based on the map. YMMV

Elrich, if one is looking for upscale resort-like accommodations then the Pink Palace is not the place. BUT if looking for a great, low key place with nice rooms, a pool, nice sala and good beach then the Pink Palace is THE place.  Been there many times. Always enjoyed it.

...and not great, but very decent restaurants a short drive or cab ride away. We once stayed there and arranged a tour with the then manager of the place on his day off and saw some great areas we never would have found by ourselves. The honor beer bar is also cute, you toss your cap in a cup with your room number and settle up at the end. A place everyone should try at least once.
