Yes, I remember that and did go there... once. It was actually around El Bajio as I recall. And Yep, during the dry years of Lake Chapala.

I could also.... but won't.... tell you a juicy story about David which includes a female. Nothing scandalous, just juicy.

Yup, it was El Bajio and he sure was captivated by that female and that had a lot to do with why he left...but as you say, not telling that story here.

Wow... Chuy's place was a landmark. I remember when he bought the place... I asked why he continued to call it "Davids" (after the previous owner) and he smiled and said 'everyone knows "Davids", no one knows me!  That changed. Always friendly.  Nice fellow. He will be missed.

That reminds me of the original owner, David. Do you remember when he "branched out" and opened a restaurant on the dried up shore of the lake in El Chante? I think it was only open at night, horseback riding tours also and steak as the main draw. Horrendous mosquitos, flies and sub-par food. The rising lake level put an end to that venture and not long after he was gone.

  3. I remember going down to the old casa de cambio next to the Delegado Office in Ajijic every Saturday when we were renovating and building. Always hopeful of getting 9 pesos to the dollar and carrying them back in a large plastic bag to make payroll. Don't think I would walk around with that many pesos these days.

We gave up on the idea of shipping anything from here to the U.S. due to cost. Every means explored was expensive and the cost always outweighed the value of the goods to be shipped.

I cringe at the cost to mail a simple letter sized envelope.

Agree, we lived in Mexico for 16.5 years and brought in a 40 foot container from the US and bought muchas cosas while there. When the cost of health insurance was slated to go from $325/ Mo. to 1165 in 2018 we had no choice to make since if we lived in the US the rate would stay the same and in fact still has. We had lots of stuff that we would have brought back but the cost was not even close to being worth it. We flew to Houston on Southwest from PV and used their 2 free bags to bring back only the most valuable stuff. Had to totally start over back here.

A dispute is really needed.  Why pay higher taxes when they probably won't have to pay capital gains as I would imagine they fall in this category:

    Primary Residence Tax Exemption

There is a provision for foreign residents of Mexico to be excluded from capital gains tax for their primary residence.  The requirements to establish residence in Mexico can include:

    Status of Residente Permanente

Longevity owning and residing at your property – including proof by having documents in your name (ie CFE Bills, Telmex Bills)

    Mexican Bank Accounts

Mexican Drivers License and Mexican Registered Vehicles

Yes and you might check with your Notario if thinking of selling. When we sold our property in PV in 2018 it was required that each of us have a bill in our own name since we were both listed on the deed. We had to go to CFE and have the account transferred into my wife's name and then wait the 60 days to receive that bill before proceeding with the closing, in order to qualify for capital gains favorable treatment. Maybe just in PV but better safe than sorry.

Pappy I suspect that you are right about the majority being smoked but much is consumed in other modalities such as 'edibles'.  And by 'experience' I don't mean indulging but rather observing!

Living in MC's "legalized dope smoking state" for years.... as opposed to just talking in conjectures about something but having no real experience in said.... I don't see nor hear of much of what is being alleged. And I don't have my head in the sand on the subject.

The first legalization in Colorado was for Medical MJ;  then later came 'recreational' sales.  In those years I did not see or smell any more 'evidence' than from when it was done under-the-sheets.  Since all smoking by now is banned (by the heavy handed authoritarians and oppression control freaks!) in public places there is basically no smoke of any kind being disbursed and boy is it nice! BYW, public places do NOT include walking down the street or in a park etc. But I RARELY smell MJ anywhere when I am out.

Now don't get me wrong. I am NOT a champion of smoking.... ANYTHING. But it is not my right nor intent to bad mouth anyone who chooses to do so.  I was a fool for smoking for 8 years way back when. I choose to NOT go to places where smoking is allowed (in other states and countries). My choice. My money. My life.

If all the MJ smokers adhered to your thoughts on the subject there would be no problems. I also don't smoke, never did because both my parents did and nearly suffocated me, and don't wish to push my view on either product on anyone else. I do observe, however, much hypocrisy on the views of some stoners as seeing their choice as much more "enlightened" than tobacco smokers.

What I find really ironic here is proponents of such over regulation coming from a state that has legalized dope smoking thereby greatly expanding the number of smokers and health damage.  That apparently is OK with said proponents of controlling others because they approve of smoking dope and the fact it is being found to be just as damaging to personal health if not more so does not matter because of that approval.

I also have been amazed at the hypocrisy of supporting one while decrying the other. Both are injurious to one's health and both stink like hell. It also puts LQ's argument to the sword.

  9. Buyers are scarce with interest rates rising since buyers are more interested in the monthly payment than the actual sales price. Sellers who don't have to sell but who wanted to move up or down are cancelling listings since they are unable to sell at what they thought was a fair price. They saw their neighbors selling for "X" back in January so can't believe prices could have gone down. Until the Fed stabilizes interest rates the buyers and sellers will be out of synch. Those folks who HAVE to sell will be a great potential deal for people who have cash and who are looking for rental property.

You're likely speaking of the same Gabi who's still there, skillfully in her role as key Floor Manager at Tango's  new location.  Gabi held the same position at the old location and, in our long standing opinion she's an incredible asset.  Over the years we've come to know many of the staff and have come to know that Ricardo, David and Wendy are highly thought of by their staff and, as a result, they have a talented cohesive team of well trained, long term employees to credit for their ongoing success.

That's great news about Gabi. When we sold the B&B she wasn't sure where to go to work and we suggested Tango. We knew Wendy and asked if she needed anyone and she said sure, send her in. She spoke no English at the time and Jean typed up a very nice recommendation for her to take. She started bussing tables, worked up to waitress and then the last time we were in she had made it to floor manager. Even after we had left Ajijic for several years Wendy always remembered us and made a point of telling us how happy she was with Gabi. One of her younger brothers was also working there bussing tables. She had a very nice child but was a single mom so hope she has found a good partner. Please tell her that Jean and Walt from Casa Flores asked about her and send out love to her and the "baby" which surely is no longer a baby. And also to give our best to her mom who was our B&B cook for the entire 6.5 years we had the B&B. Wonderful people and they helped us make incredible deposits in our memory banks. Gracias Carnivore...and is the big filet as great as it always was? Enough for the next day for me.

  11. So many places forget a cardinal rule...you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Mexican restaurants in general seem to think they can "learn as they go" and eventually get things right. When we opened Casa Flores B&B we invited people for free the first several weeks just to get a feel for what we were doing. Not that it prepared us for what was to come but it surely helped. These days they seem to have clever names for such things like "soft opening". More of the restaurants should consider that idea.  And Carnivore I'm sure you remember that it started as Pampa Tango until a small legal problem developed. We had a standing reservation for 4 so we could show our guests what a class place that part of Mexico had to offer. One of our employees, Gabi, went on to have a nice role there. No dea if she is still there since we haven't been back for several years.

  12. Were we still in Mexico I would solve this problem by having our attorney register the workers with IMSS, if they already are not. Then I would have him tell me how much is the employees share and rather than actually withhold it, just add it to my share and make the appropriate deposit to IMSS each month. In the case of someone working a few hours a week we're talking real short money. If you ignore it will you get caught? Probably not. The real risk is if you ignore, even with the employees permission, is some really large bill being incurred by that employee that they can't pay. Then the burden of paying that bill may shift to you. Think accident, cancer, heart attack, etc. Play the game and pay the attorney to keep you legal...you'll sleep better also.
