  1. A male Mexican friend told me that Mexican babies were born with a "bollilo" and that two more feet under the dining table was never a big problem in a working class (taxi driver) family. It is the women, in this case, who put an end to that notion. It is always their health and good looks at risk.
  2. If I remember correctly, which is not always a sure thing these days, BP gas uses additional additives to improve performance, clean injectors, etc. That is why BP gas is a little more expensive than other brands.
  3. Hannah and her husband are great, they really understand meat. You, on the other hand do not. Real spring lamb should be pink, tender, and juicy. As Jeff Smith used to say, over cooked lamb is terrible. Even my cat won't eat it.
  4. I have heard a couple reports from mixed race couples. One was next door. He tall, blonde, from the Netherlands but a real jerk with lots of attitude. He met a Mexican young lady, had a pretty little girl with her, but refused to marry her. He also owned an apartment in Guadalajara, he was bilingual. When they walked the streets there, strangers would ask why are you stealing our Mexican girls. Another was a friend of my Mother, living in Puerto Vallarta. Their son came down for a visit. He went to a mostly Mexican bar, and I guess was flirting with the ladies. You know how that goes, they flirt back as much as he was giving. When he left the bar, there were four Mexican men waiting for him and they gave him a severe beating. Leave our Mexican girls and women alone they warned.
  5. I am going to visit Dra. Rocio's pain clinic in Guadalajara to see what she can cook up for me. It is not like I trying to return to an athletic career (unless they declare procrastination as an athletic event. I am sure I could win a bronze - if I can remember to send in the entry). I just want the pain to stop. Medical Cannabis helps, but only for up to 5 hours. I have tried Dicoflonec. But it seems to inflame my lower esophogal sphincter, which in turn causes dysphagia. What is the point of learning big words if you don't get a chance to use them?
  6. After living on a farm with one lawn tractor, one ride on lawn mower, two push lawnmowers, two chainsaws, one gas powered air compressor, one gas leaf blower, three vehicles- I really had to know about gasoline. One thing I learned is that todays gas pump gasoline has a lot of additives to save money. It would go "bad" after six weeks. The octane and aromatics evaporated. Engines were hard to start and weaker. Your choice was to buy an expensive octane booster liquid, or buy gas from a particular station. This gas was higher in aromatics and lasted in tanks much longer. This claim had been tested and proven correct by a well known chainsaw company. Most modern vehicles have computers and sensors which can adjust the fuel mixture. On the other hand, my 1991 diesel truck could run on cooking oil or home heating oil. My 1972, 22 foot motorhome, didn' t even have a gas tank air filter. The motorhome was not fussy about octane, but after getting the engine rebuilt by a professional race car company, and a new Holley four barrel carburator, I think it got only 8 miles per gallon. That is why I did not bring it down. Now I wish I had because it would have made, or sold as, an ideal food truck conversion. Over 300 hp and a high torque cam used for tow trucks, it could have easily tackled any mountain that Mexico offered. I probably could have used Amtrack's new auto and train service to travel through from Seattle to San Diego. Surprisingly affordable, if you don't mind travelling coach. You travel by train, your vehicle is stored in a seperate rail car.
  7. My take on this. I need a knee replacement, a hip replacement, and back surgery. I wore these bones to dust working in Canada. Me and employees were taxed brutally because of high incomes. So now the suggestion is that I spend whatever monies I managed to claw back from the greedy tax collectors mitts to hand it over to greedy doctor' mitts -dont' think so. I contributed a working lifetime paying into the universal health care and worker insurance scheme. These operations would all be free in Canada. The wait times are not bad at all, especially outside the urban centres. If I had to spend one or two years back in British Columbia before I return to Mexico as 2.0, well there are far worse fates.
  8. Depends. Are still referencing an emergency situation, like a slip and fall. Or catastrophic event such cancer, or an extreme motor vehicle accident? The costs for catastrophic treatment rise very quickly in private hospital care. For example, if the slip and fall broke your hip bone, and you need an artificial replacement, the cost would be roughly $14,000 US. You can shop around at general hospitals, public hospitals ( they are overflowing), the Military hospital in Guadalajara or the Naval Hospital (in Puerto Vallarta). It takes some imagination, for example you can negotiate directly with the orthotic appliance supplier. But all this time, you are paying at least $500 per day for your private hospital room. Sad emoji is the new Glad emoji as far as I am concerned - ha ha ha
  9. Natasha. Knew you could do it! Do you have phone number for TotalPlay? I want to find out if they can do a multiline commercial install for my friends at Quality Care. This would involve a multi line PBX, which they already have.
  10. Is this for INR? Our medic officer on this ship, Ferret, recommends keeping to the same lab for INR. There is very good blood specialist who comes to Quality Care from Guadalajara.
  11. I wish! Love dancing, but I think my walker would slow everyone down.
  12. I haven' t asked Hector about this, I am a Tu friend. I think he is being hustled by certain Telmex personnel. He is too stubborn to bend over. The lack of telephones is costing him plenty, and he and they know it. What is the alternative? Anybody, please?
  13. What type of tiles are they? Glazed or sealed Saltillo, or solid colored concrete? The cost of hard floor cleaner/buffers have gone way down (many under $150) . Consumer level brands like Bissel for example. Also steam mops for cleaning. Professional models mostly use diamond pads these days.
  14. Rentals here are found by boots on the ground and an ear to the local gossip post (town square). So it really helps if you speak basic Spanish. In general, Mexicans are very frugal, and do not like the idea of paying someone to find a gringo tenant. In many other parts of Mexico, you are required to put up an onerous financial gaurantee. They are likely to forgo this entirely, or accept a bond, especially Lakeside. Maybe, as a consequence, I have heard of many rentals lately abandoning their rentals, and many more squatters. They might blame Covid, as an excuse, helping out family etc. Another "problem" is the Mexican tax department has hired hundreds of new collectors. If a home or apartment is rented as furnished, the owner, through the tenant, is legally required to pay a 16% tax on the rent, another 3% if in a tourist area. If they advertise the rental on the internet, they are basically sitting ducks. Properties here often take many years to sell, unless highly discounted. A great many people here do not own houses, the houses own them. Very high and ever constant repair costs here. Landlords are required to pay all major repair costs. The Courts are very much pro-tenant here. Even pro- Squatter. This is the situation, warts and all. We have been very lucky over the last 11 years, finding some wonderful homes, never paying more than $500 U.S. per month in peso equivalent.
  15. This crew wouldn't know the difference between a chide, or a slide, or the electric boogaloo.
  16. Sorry, Dad. I will go to my room. Mitch - have you checked the LCS phone directory? There is a David Cook 376 776 4096 There is a Jim Cook 376 776 1548 There is a Bonnie Cook, on Facebook, living in Ajijic. Jeez, I get all the heat, but I am actually the only person who helped. Typical of the whelps on this forum.
  17. Contact Eric Blair. He seems determined to find every female in the Greater Lake Chapala (GLC) area. At 80 plus years, he desperately needs a wingman.
  18. In case you haven't bothered to notice, there is a lot of overlap between India ( South Asia) foods, Mexican foods, and Northern Chinese foods. Especially when it comes to chiles and how to use them.
  19. Most everybody knows when dealing with ants, to kill off the hunter, worker, gatherers just prompts the queen ant to make more eggs/ troops. You have to kill the nest. Boric acid causes the nest to dry out, and the queen will die from no food from her loyal servants. Take the cover off the electrical outlet, determine where the ants are coming from, including the conduit, plug those areas with soft, non permanent plumbers putty, then problem solved.
  20. You should look at Ushas Pickle Digest on Amazon.com. The kindle version has been marked down from $20.69 to $7.99, delivered in minutes over the internet. I tried to find a way to send it you but it is a big files and would have strip the digital rights protection. This a real foodies book, and maybe offer many interesting directions for you. She uses curry leaves a lot and also asafoetida which when cooked smells and tastes like a mix of garlic and leeks. The best place to buy as far as quality and pricing is Rani Foods in Houston. I have ordered from them many times. Even mustard oil which is banned in the USA if sold as a food item, but is legal if sold as a hair tonic.
  21. The last time I saw Dr. Pinto he told me that a bunch of local ophthamolgists got together to build a Lakeside eye surgery facility, but the government of Jalisco was against it and told them they would never get a license.
  22. I have told this story before. It is supposed to be true, and concerns an American lady who moved to San Miquel Allende. She was a movie actress, who in good times built her dream bungalow. She had a full time housekeeper all the time. Well work dried up, as often happens with older actresses. Money became tighter, and the housekeeper decided to retire and move back to Mexico in a village near SMA. Money became tighter still, and the actress was forced to sell her home. She telephoned the housekeeper, to explain what was going, and how difficult it was to find a reasonable rental. The ex housekeeper told her, come live with me, I would love to have you and always enjoyed your company. The actress decided to do that. She flew to SMA and got a taxi to the address. When she got there her jaw dropped - the house was an exact replica of the bungalow she had built! The ex housekeeper explained that she loved that house, and carefully saved to get the copy built. As far as I know, they lived happily together ever after.
  23. I just ran across it in what has become a cult classic cookbook called "Usha's Pickle Digest" which is collection of 1,000(!) India pickle recipes. She had one calling for chow chow, so I had to look it up, like so many things in that book. It is like reading instructions for an ancient treasure hunt, or a sorcerer's manual. She a new book pending any day with 1,000 Rasam recipes. Rasams are from Southern India and are spicy broths to sprinkle on dry, leftover rice etc. https://food52.com/blog/25629-what-is-rasam
