  1. In a former life I used to do large ‘technical projects’. I would have salivated for a 3.5 to 4-year ROI payback period AND with little or no O&M costs for the life of the ‘project’. If one sees ANY possibility of their living Lakeside for that long it is a no-brainer. Even if one has to leave, think of the selling point to a prospective buyer of having little or no electrical bill and no DAC to worry about ever.
  2. Since it is over 1,000 miles from Nogales to Lakeside most people spend 2 nights on the road. A good first stop is Navajoa at the Best Western or another hotel there, then another night in Mazatlan, then on into Lakeside the third day. If stopping in Navajoa is too soon for you (7+ hours after getting done at the border), then Los Mochis is about 10 hours down.... but then it is 11 hours on to Lakeside and some folks don’t like to travel that long in Mexico 2 days in a row. Due to toll booths and fueling, a good average miles-in-an-hour figure is about 55 miles if driving 70-ish. YMMV
  3. HA! Thanks for spotting my oversight. I’ll delete the Post.
  4. .... and of course you can do all that online too, which completes the circle. Work from Mexico, file from Mexico.
  5. Does Google, with Google Voice, do the same thing with ‘retainage’ as they do with Google Search? Google knows/has EVERY search I have done over the years. As a result, if I search for something (new) that I might want to purchase or know more about, it is not long before I start getting advertisement ‘drop downs’ of that product from other sites that allow advertisements embedded.
  6. Well VWs are German cars and there are a boat-load of them in Mexico. Yes, I know that a VW is not a BMW or Mercedes , but I suspect that ‘parts’ would be a bigger problem than finding a mechanic that would know/could learn how to take care of one.
  7. ILOX: Certainly don't take this as gospel, but.... yes, ILOX has distribution fiber running over on the south side of the lake but to my knowledge it is a 'fiber optic cable ring' between Guadalajara and Queretaro. It was ONLY because of Tom Kessler et. al. and a ton of potential customers on the north shore, Jocotopec to Chapala, that they even entertained the potential to branch off that cable ring and provide 'to the home' fiber. And even then it was ONLY if 250-300 folks ponied up a year's deposit that they agreed to string fiber onto the north shore. I doubt that there is enough potential at this time for the south shore to get the same 'look'. But, as I say, I don't have any info that says that this is true... just a businessman's hunch.
  8. mudgirl, the plan you have, and with tethering, is certainly one way to go and would work for me as I don’t stream movies. And while the cellphone ‘signal’ is probably the same with either, the ‘new’ modem plan is just that.... ‘new’. And different as to capabilities and restrictions and speed and cost and..... Another ‘benefit’ of your use of tethering is that you can move around with it.... take your iPad and cellphone to the park and surf etc. Take it to the beach and you’re still good to go. But for others who want a lot of gb’s for streaming which they will do at their casa, and at a VERY attractive price once a modem is purchased, the two plans are night and day different.
  9. Are you referring to getting a TelCel ‘at home’ device from which other devices can be ‘tethered’?
  10. As Harry said, “NO”. One can’t sell any foreign plated vehicle, here on a TIP (Temporary Import Permit), in Mexico. Part of what you agreed to when getting the TIP was to not sell it within Mexico and to remove it from Mexico when one’s visa expires. Of course, a Permanente cannot have one here at all. So if you want to rid yourself of the vehicle you have ‘only’ the choice of removing it to Canada. One could ‘sell it’ in Mexico to another Canadian who would ‘promise’ to remove it from Mexico and drive to Canada immediately. Under rare cases a US citizen could Import it into the US and sell it there. That process is not guaranteed for all vehicles and is not for the faint of heart. This I know from personal experience.
  11. There are some at Lakeside that will do this for a fee plus expenses. Other’s might ‘buy’ it from you and do the same but I don’t think that is what you are referring to.....
  12. With any dentist or dentista I would use, appointments would be necessary unless just for something simple like a cleaning. All can be contacted from the US. I just did that to two different dentists. Add Dr. Barragan’s office to your list but don’t expect to just walk in without an appointment, as stated above. You have been given about the top four dentists in town (yes, I know others could be added to the list but how many choices does one need!).
  13. 500 miles a day does not jibe with 5 nights. 2 nights maybe....
  14. Welcome to the Board Enrique. Nice to have this valuable information. Question: In November, does the ‘year’ for the 50% import duty change to 2009 and older vehicles?
  15. I suspect we all did.... add me to the list.
  16. Short answer is NO. A Tourist Card is not extendable (except under very limited circumstances usually having to do with health). Your’s was designated as 120 days..... usually they are for 180 days, but..... and you must exit Mexico by the 120th day. If you want to stay in Mexico until the end of the year, you must ‘get’ to the border, turn in your existing FMM document (Tourist card in this case), turn around and re-enter on a new Tourist Card. That will (normally) get you to the end of the year at least. In this case, “Your Mileage Won’t Vary”. 😉
  17. To take this a bit further with respect to the ‘cost’ to Nationalize this particular vehicle.... assuming that it was worth $10,000 (which it probably is not, but the math is easier this way). The cost will come from these things: - cost (minimal) to have it Exported from the US by Customs & Border Protection Agency of Homeland Security - 16% IVA on 10% fee ( $10,000US x 10% = $1,000. Then times 16% IVA = $160 + the $1,000 fee = $1,160. - $50US for the Aduana fee - Broker’s fee. If one doesn’t drive their own vehicle to the border and back, then there will be additional fees to whomever is hired to provide this service to the owner - Getting the vehicle to/from the border and staying 2-3 days there for the process - Jalisco fees for title and license The unknown here is just how much a bonded broker might charge at the border or how much a ‘we’ll handle it for you’ fee might be, but in the end it could easily cost from north of $2,500 to $4,000+. Some people are comfortable with this amount as they might know that their car is sound. Others would just say sell it for $10,000 in the US and add the ‘saved’ $2500-$4,000 to buy a Mexican plated car.... maybe one that ‘fits’ the narrow streets at Lakeside, gets better fuel mileage and doesn’t have the Transitos following you around.
  18. Sonia can answer for herself in due course but since she lives in San Miguel I doubt that she will know Ajijic residents who "moonlight" and assist local people with this and other kind of services. Sonia deals more with registered and bonded agents at the border. Whomever you use just make sure that the vehicle is also EXPORTED from the US by US Customs and Border Protection as part of the process... and that takes a trip to the border with the vehicle. P.S. The term is "Nationalize" P.P.S. This Post is absolutely NOT in any way meant to be derogatory towards Tim and Jayme or any services they may provide
  19. Awhh Shucks, Pappy. All of us try to provide accurate info. Sometimes we do and sometimes it is a bit off, so let’s downgrade that ‘gold’ to maybe just ‘silver’.😎 But thanks for the vote of confidence.
  20. A 2007 vehicle is not too old to "Nationalize"... probably the correct word for your 'legalize', you’ll just pay a bit higher tax (rate) on the value. I have no idea what you might be talking about when you ask about a fine... a vehicle can either be Nationalized or it can't. To my knowledge there is no other process which includes a fine.
  21. generic is all I use...... still had a hack. I think these things are different for different folks.
  22. Moderator(s), IMO this needs to be Pinned..... Thanks Spencer!
  23. Certain high blood pressure meds will also cause a dry hack that goes away almost immediately upon changing med. I can start long after one starts that med. Been there done that.
