  1. Thank you. I'll check them out tomorrow.
  2. I'm looking to buy an eye patch. I've been to Walmart and Pharmacia Guadalajara. Nada. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  3. mkshawn....I live down here 6 months per year. I'm here now and will be until April. I won't see my optometrist in Canada until May, and they then refer me to an opthamologist (wait time over 12 months), then on his/her list ( 3 months or so) before surgery. Rather than wait 18 months for surgery in Canada, (which is covered under provincial insurance) I thought about paying for surgery here in order to get it sooner (perhaps autumn of this year? I just have to weigh the financial cost vs expedience.
  4. I had successful surgery for a detached retina in September in Canada. One result is that a 'young' cataract in that eye has become much worse, and ophamologists here and in Canada feel it should be dealt with surgically within a year. Current wait times for cataract surgery (which is covered by the provincial health plan) is 18 months or more. I am thinking of getting the surgery done here next winter. Can someone advise me on the approximate cost of cataract surgery in an eye that has had a detached retina previously? I believe a different kind of lens is required under these conditions.
  5. OP here, clarifying. When this happened to us 10 years ago, we were informed that a turista could not leave the country without the car they drove in with. This was to curtail the dumping of foreign cars in Mexico. If we left the country, we had to turn in the tip and cross the border by car. The people who have responded have indicated that it would be ok, as long as the tip is up to date (it is...4 months left on it) our friend could fly out of the country, leave the car here, and return by air and continue to stay here until the tip expires in April. Again, this is not what the case was 10 years ago. Our choices were to drive out of Mexico or obtain special permission to fly, which took time, money and was problematic when we didn't need to go after getting permission to do so. Although my friend only needs to be in Canada for a few days, if he has to take the car across the border before he can fly, and then return with the car after his trip to Canada, it will add several days to his trip. He'd obviously like to avoid that if it is legally possible to do so. One concern I have, if the people who have responded are right and he can just leave his car and fly out of the country for a few days, is what does my friend do about his 'turista'? He obtained one when he entered the country by car in November and he is expected to turn it in when his trip here is up in April. He will be asked to fill another one out if he flies back from Canada after his emergency trip. Is his TIP not tied to his original turista visa? I will check all this out with a lawyer and imigrado next week. I'm just trying to determine the lay of the land
  6. A friend is here on a turista visa. He drove in with his car, and has a TIP. He's 2 months in to a 6 month stay. An emergency has come up in Canada, and he has to return for several days. When this happened to us ten years ago, we only had 2 options: drive the car out of Mexico, go to a southern US airport with the car, fly to Canada, fly back to the airport, and drive the car (new tip, new turista) back to Ajijic from the border. OR Get a special letter/form from imigrado, which took awhile, giving permission to leave the country, and the car, temporarily, and use it to fly to Canada for a few days. In our case, we ultimately did not need to go to Canada after all, and there was some hassle because we didn't actually use the form. Our experience was 10 years ago. Before the lawyer is back in his office on Monday, I was wondering if anyone knew if the rules had changed in the last 10 years, or if there is a third alternative? I'll get anything confirmed bya lawyer and imigrado, but I'd like any advance info this weekend if you have it. Thanks.
  7. My plantar fasciitis is acting up again. I usually buy Dr Scholl heel inserts for my shoes and it clears up after awhile. At the Farmacia Guadalajara I've only found full foot pads used to reline the soles of shoes...not really what I need. Does anyone know where I can buy the heel inserts? They are usually wedge shaped, raise the heel and taper down into the sole. Sometimes they are hard foam, and sometimes they are gel. Alternatively, does anyone know where I can buy orthotics? Thanks.
  8. Last winter we hired Jose Luis Gonzalez at "Dirty Paws" Grooming to come to our house and bathe our two dogs, and trim the longer haired one. We were happy with the service and price. This winter I tried to contact Jose by telephone (376 108 8540) and WhatsAp, but have been unsuccessful getting a response. Does anyone know if he is still in business, has changed his contact info, or knows how I can get in touch with him? Alternatively, can anyone recommend someone to do the same service, and is available in the next week? Our little one is getting rather scruffy looking, and both dogs could use a bath. Thanks
  9. Is there anywhere that cuts keys in central Ajijic? I have to be there tomorrow and have an hour to kill while waiting for my wife, so two birds with one stone as they say...
  10. My husband and I live in Mexico for 6 months per year. We are Canadian, and have health insurance there for the rest of the year. I have my Permanente status, and can use Mexican health care, but as I age (age 72) I feel I should supplement this rather than self-insuring if I need to. I've looked at travel policies, and that may be the way to go, but I was wondering if there is such a thing as a regular health insurance plan in Mexico that I can access (and pay premiums for) for six months of the year, or do I have to pay the annual fee, even though I will not be in the country for half the year. Any suggestions are appreciated. ps My husband comes to Mexico on a turista visa so that we can bring in our car. He buys traveller's insurance to cover his needs.
  11. We have lived in lower Riberas for more than 10 years. Our house is over 25 years old. We've had no problems with the water supply. We have a filter system coming into the property, and a drinking water filter system in the kitchen. We have a couple of garafons of water in reserve in case they are needed , but haven't had to use them. (We used bottled water for cooking and drinking before we got our kitchen filter system.) There was some work on the sewer system down the street this winter, and we had to conserve water somewhat for a day or so, but that's been the extent of water shortage.
  12. Thanks, barrbower. I thought it might be something like that.
  13. When I walk my dog on Av de la Ribera in Riberas, for the past 3 or 4 days I've seen the Chapala police parked outside a particular house, with at least one cop outside with a walkie talkie. Don't know if they are there all day, but they've been there every day. Does anyone know the story? Just curious.
  14. I booked this young man besed on your recommendation. We have 2 dogs...one needed a bath and grooming, the other just a nail trim. He was punctual, excellent with the dogs, inexpensive, and pleasant. I highly recommend his service.
  15. We went with Tecno Aqua, though I'm sure the other company would have been as thorough, prompt and careful. We have drinking water again, and our cupboard under the sink is dry!
  16. Does anyone know someone who does power washing? We have a cement pad patio with ridges put into the cement to provide traction, but which also fills with dust and dirt which won't come out with a hose and wire brush. We'd like someone to come and give it a good clean. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
  17. Thanks for the responses. We had a technician come to the house and diagnose the problem. He'll return today with the part needed, and hopefully will end this saga.
  18. We've just had a reverse osmosis system installed under our kitchen counter by a 'contractor' who claimed he knew what he was doing. He's been back 3 times to repair a leak coming from one of the connecting hoses. We're so done with him, and would like to know if anyone knows someone qualified to look at the installation, find the leak problem and fix it. Thanks
  19. I've cleared out our bodega and have some stuff, mostly wood, that I'd like to get rid of. The garbage guys have not taken it, and no one garbage picking seems interested, no matter how I've tried to put it out and hope it goes. Is there a public dump where I can take this stuff? It's not really suitable for recycling or even burning in a fireplace. Mostly pressboard and such. About a car trunk worth. I'm in Riberas. Thanks.
  20. The contrast between Walmart and Soriana is becoming more and more evident. At Soriana, I can walk through the aisles without stepping over cartons and workers sitting on the floor. There is more than one checkout open. Staff is not overly friendly, but not surly either. Prices are comparable, and I can usually find what I would go to Walmart for. We live in Riberas, so it's not much longer to drive there. Vegetable section is about the same (lack of) quality as Walmart. It's my go-to supermarket now with Pancho's or Fresh Market for veggies.
  21. Thank you both. Very helpful advice.
  22. I'd like to have my off-white cotton quilt dyed yellow or green to disguise a small stain. Does anyone know a laundry that will do this, or, alternatively, where I can buy washing machine dye to do it myself?
  23. When we used to come down for the winter, in the 'before times', I would annually visit the stall on the Chapala malecon that had a huge variety of cotton casual clothing at excellent prices. I believe the woman who owned the stall/shop was named Alicia. I know that, when we were last here, in 2020, she had moved to the other side of the road while the town was rebuilding the premises she occupied. When I looked for her stall this week, I could not locate it. Can anyone tell me if this woman is still selling her clothing, if she's moved, or if she is no longer in business? Thanks.
  24. I've been told sprinkling this on a dogs food will help in fighting fleas. Does anyone know where I can get it locally? I don't want ordinary yeast for bread making. Thanks.
  25. I have lost one of our keyless entry and starter fobs for our Kia Soul. Does anyone know of a place who can supply and configure a fob without me resorting to the dealership in Guadalajara? Thanks
