  1. Talk about a TROLL!!!! He is putting us all on, since he is living in his in-laws basement with nothing better to do....

  2. I have no negative feelings about more people moving here. Have even had some come to my place and never fail to express the wonders of living here to anyone far and wide. My problem is with the border promotion northtek who's ramblings have shown me that his claims of expertise are not what one would expect from a real expert in the field. OH and he seems to be flying by the seat of his pants with no actual plan and realistic strategy. pedro kertesz

  3. You are seeing the same thing here. What is now noticable is many experienced Epats have described " Expat Experience" [ the title of this thread ] from a seasoned perspective and he walks right over these many posters' comments as if he finds them trivial and contuniously talks about finding/creating some pie in the sky "Expat Experience" that doesn't exist, never existed except maybe in his fantasy of what people/viewers want to believe Expats experience when moving to and living in Mexico. A cartoon might be more suitable in this case. The everyday reality of living here has been repeatedly reported by many posters and is being sidestepped as being .... [ who knows what, ]

  4. Well the answer should be 'si', but me thinks that they are/were doing it for folks who are actually living short or long term at Lakeside but forgetting to tell their insurance company about this.... Or least that is what it smells like.

  5. Once you get there and get settled in you'll have more information about just where you want to settle down long-term and.... time to wander around and find that place at the best time of the year to secure it.... low season. And the bonus is that you'll learn just how the various sections of Lakeside, micro and macro, are put together.

  6. I see the exact same thing you do. Thanks for confirming my speculation about what is actually transpiring here. He doesn't even know what video engineers do. A dead giveaway.

  7. Total bunk. My career as a video engineer taught me what video is technically and the interest level that sells. Your critique of Youtube videos centered on Expats' living in Mexico I view often is so bias it makes me wonder if you know anything or have watched more than a few Youtube videos on the Mexico - foreigner experience. Your continued talking about it also makes me wonder the same thing. Are you putting us on?

  8. I did that too when I started thekilns, I went to get a price then sent a mason to get the price then negociated a better price than the mason that was from the village that gets a discount.. net net I found out that the mason was getting his cut too.. Then I sent another person I could trust 100 % then I got the village price so the money could go further for the family.. but it is a fight getting to the bottom of everything..

  10. Alan Mexicali It has never happened to me in over 40 years in Mexico. Of course you might think it does but you could be mistaken. Common stereotypical urban legend I've heard a hundred times. You must be very special because it happens all the time. I have to buy construction material to do kilns.. So I negociate with various suppliers- then I ask a man from the family , the kiln is for to go and negociate the same thing and I can tell you that there are prices that you as a gringo or outsider. you will not get. I buy a lot so my price is usually good but for example last year I negociated a price that was lower than the people in town told me I should pay. Then I sent an indigenous mason negociate and he got a price half a peso lower than I dit. on the bricks. I went back to the person who quoted him the price and told the brickmaker I would pay the lower price, he told me no way and turned down the order. I told him my friend from that village was quoted that price and I was told ," ah yes the people from that village get that price but people who are not from there get the higher price.¨¨. I can tell you this happens a whole lot more you would think.. Not in the stores but we artisans and independent contractors it happens all the time. Two weeks ago I negociated the price afor a couple of vans. I then ask indigenous people to negociate the price , I was quoted 1500 pesos and they were quoted 1400. Since I buy for the groups of the village I use my price to give the government for their estimates or budget and give the money to the village for their price. The difference goes for the extra stuff needed and equalize some prices.. Do not tell me there is no gringo or outsider price..

  12. There is a calle in Chapala, actually a narrow alley, it is called "Pompous Fonetica". The small musical instrument shop at #29 would be a perfect stop for Northtek.....they sell Mexican "Toot your own horn too much." The owner Carlos Santana will also tell you what a border promotion is.......Don't miss this.

  13. The main person here who appears to be over estimating their worth is you. Going on and on about your ideas and experience and plans with lengthy post after lengthy post is not what is known as soliciting "feedback". You mentioned elsewhere that you were bored. That's patently evident. There are all sorts of worthwhile endeavors you could volunteer your time to in order to be part of and get a first hand look at the expat experience of those who actually live here, but it seems you prefer to blither on daily on a public forum instead. And you also seem to be wanting to present the area in a video in a way that is not truly reflective of what goes on. For instance, you only want to show the lake when it's clear, not when it's muddy, even though muddy is how it looks a lot of the time.

  16. I would like to say this isn't the case but people watch what they either can relate to directly or see themselves doing. Which is why I think what I will be doing will be different than what is already on you tube, as There ae some that have very good production value and are informative, But are pretty much like the videos I see about computers. As I am not sure who they make the videos for? As the computers they show are way over priced and they all seem to go one about the RGB lights. I like computers, but I could care a less what lights are blinking and I doubt very much I would buy a computer in the $10k range. I just want one that works. Same with the videos about living in Mexico, as CNBC has one that is really well produced but it focuses on people that few can relate to, such as a high level lawyer that says she retired at 39. Others that have good production value focus on the cost of living, which is good, but its a small sampling and really doesn't explore what its like living here. The ones that try and do, have very low production value, filmed with an iPhone or something, and are mostly talking heads that become pretty much say the same and get boring pretty fast. Its like they are making a video for the sake of making a video. No real storytelling or relatable material. Now I wont go too deep on what I am planning as I firmly believe in the adage "under promise and over deliver" but I plan on bring both together and making it fun. That is story telling and production value.

  17. Yes, of course.. That occurred to me while I was looking at the business card (with no address!). Not sure how to describe the location. It is on the same side as the plaza. As you walk two or three blocks as though you were heading towards Soriana, there is a small lighting store right before you turn into this open area with a bunch of small shops. I did find this on the web: Hope this helps. Servicios de Fotografia y Videograbacion. Nuestro propósito es la satisfacción de nuestros clientes, somos especialistas en Fotografia. 18. CorinneS - take a deep breath, go through your new home mentally for what you think you are going to need. Make a list. My 2 centavos... Buy as much as you can NOB. Better selection and better quality for just about everything you will need for your home. If you buy items NOB, just take them out of the packages for crossing the border so they don't look new. You can bring household items with no problem, especially since you are moving here. As far as Ross and Burlington Coat Factory? - HeeHaw. Nothing like that here. You are going to find that Walmart and Costco in MX have the same names as NOB but much different products and prices.

  21. I live in an all Mexican neighborhood and I have 2 brick layers/iron workers/plumbers/electricians and we do a lot of renovation work. I buy a lot of stuff but the sellers never see me. 😉. I always smile at the prices charged to non Mexicans. 😇 (but then again both parties are happy).

  22. One day when I parked at the supermarket one of those guys who polishes up the yellowed headlights approached and asked to do that. As they really could have used it, I asked him how much? He said 800 pesos. I just laughed and walked away.

  25. Yep, but this is where it will diverge from what's available, mainly the majority are just trying to sell something, or just make money in some way. I am not looking for fame or fortune or likes on youtube. The fact is I have been here for almost 2 years, most of my days had been under covid, so there has been a lot of doing nothing and I now realize for a person like me, doing nothing is the hardest thing I have ever done. So when I though, ok what the hell do I want to do with my time, this was suggested to me. First I thought, who the hell would watch it, but after watching a ton of videos on YouTube, Ok this does interest people. But The production value left a lot to be desired. The storylines are shallow and none go into great depth of what its actually like living here as an expat. So I figured why not, I have the experience and the equipment and the time. It was either that or get sucked into working with a friend that wants to do construction, I think? not really sure as most of the time I was talking to him he was trying to convince me that $20,000 pesos a month is good money. I am sure it is, but didn't have the heart to tell him that even though I was bored, I wasn't that bored. Plus, I am not sure I want to get this show beholden to any financial interests as that heavily influences what the show becomes about. As the last show I did under the Bell Canada media umbrella was nothing but towing the company line and it sucked the life out of the project. This will be my show where I am free to do what I want free from corporate interests. So if it works then great, if not, all good too.

  32. I was going by jrod's post above...says he just made the trip: "I traveled yesterday and my three tolls totalled $335. As points of comparison, the app.sct.gob.mx site calculates my tolls to be $301; the tollsmart.com indicates $324. So, both trackers are slightly off...they may not have updated for the increases we were charged at some toll locations on Jan 1, 2022." The MX$2597 indicated on the map shows right in the middle of the trip...so I think you have to consider the rest of the journey....

  33. As a decidedly anti big-government Conservative (see my recent posts regarding the extortionist emission testing here), this is one of the few things that is the exception to the rule (others being public safety and border control...how is that working NOB today?). On my final trip down here in 2008 from S. California (near L.A.) in my packed pickup truck with my loyal dog Mo (RIP) we first stopped in Nogales AZ to overnight at a hotel there. The next morning crossing the border with my new Temporary Resident visa and onto Highway 15, and after all day driving stopping at Las Moches, finding a great gated motel that accepted Mo. The third day of driving brought us to the home that I had rented 2 weeks earlier on a scouting trip here in lower SAT where I still live today. We came all the way on highways built by both the US and Mexican governments (tax money). I cannot remember the amount of tolls that I paid then, but the approx. US$300 mentioned here (I am sure a lot less then) does not seem unreasonable for the well built road systems, toll booths and takers (how would you like that job?) plus the safety factor. When democratic (small d) governments are voted in by well informed voters, and run correctly the system works!!!

  36. I was told that this was important to let people feel involved, gain feed back and such as it was important to gage reactions, but every show I was on someone else did this step. Truthfully I had to admit when they gave us the data we tried to use it, but overall they also told me that dealing with the public is not something that most of them wanted to deal with. As for not knowing what a video engineer does, many of those guys wore may hats, but I had little involvement with them, they had nothing to do with my job. In Fact, outside of productions that were unionized, we didn't have them, so it left me wondering if they were really that needed, as most videographers take care of their own equipment. But here is the thing, feedback maybe an important step, but this site seems to be full of people over estimating their worth or have nothing better to do than take away from what others try to do. Because seriously outside of criticizing, you still haven't told us what exactly makes you an expert. But it just goes to show, people are all too willing to give criticism but unwilling to take it. So I am almost done the first episode and the help from this site has been pretty much from one or two people, the rest is just negative people spreading their own discontent on the world. So maybe its time to rethink if it is a helpful thing or not. Its a shame but not surprising.

  37. Well gringohombre if the subject matter is boring you, nothing is keeping you here. You are free to wonder other conversations and spread your wisdom there. AlanMexicalli, These "incoherant thoughts" are part of the feed back process. The idea is to try and explain the premise and hopefully get constructive comments to see if it resonates with people. Also, nothing personal, but I have been to way too many production meetings and not once was a video engineer involved. We had plenty of them on staff but were never included in the creative process. truth be told I had never asked what it was that you guys did, I just assumed it was color correction. Mostly because the unions had requirements that there were so many people, that half of them I still have no idea what they did.

  38. "It's about respect and understanding and it is very much a two way street". I couldn't agree with this more, look I know that I am new here and I am doing my best to respect everyone and dont even mind valid criticism. So I know everyone is not onboard with this idea and have had a couple people accuse me of fishin or some thing called a border promo, still not sure what that is. But I am trying to do something that could prove to be useful or at least entertaining. So look, I have no idea what has happen here before and am no stranger of being accused of something that I have no intention of doing. Because I took time off and worked in the family construction company, trust me, everyone thinks contractors are trying to rip them off. But I did well because when people meet me they realized that one, I simply dont care enough to lie to anyone, secondly, I am way too honest, if I want to make money on something I would tell you. Point blank. So if you think this is an effort to do something that's fine, but hit and run accusations are low, so if you think something is up, then ask me, I will tell you. But at least tell me what it is you think I am doing, because I am pretty sure you are way off.
