  1. After 10 years here with cohetes going off every few days, I`ve realized there is no point in asking "Why?". Could be a birthday, another type of gathering, couple of guys sitting in their car late at night just setting them off, some guy down at the lake ripping a few or it could actually, as the cultural explanation goes, be a fiesta. At first, I went crazy, asking everyone "Why?" and getting angry each time ("How dare they disrupt my peace?"). The Mexican always just shrugged their shoulders, like "yeah, so what, what can you do about it?". Now, cohetes are just part of my landscape. My aural mind has evolved. But I don`t have dogs or cats so I don`t have that predicament and it must be pretty awful. So, unless you want to do battle with the priests, and you know the cops won`t do anything and the neighbors won`t do anything, you`re going to have to find a solution for yourself and your dogs.

  4. Our dog was born in 2005, while we were living in Chapala, and is still with us 16.5 years later, in spite of her breed's expected lifespan of up to 16 years. Perhaps it is due to her calm disposition and being born into a cohete environment, where she never flinched at the explosions. Some say that a dog mimics its master's reactions to such events. I think that may be true, as those who complain about cohetes seem to have dogs who are also upset about them. Cohetes are just another part of Mexico's culture, and expats should learn to accept that fact. Asi es la vida.

  5. There were a LOT less cohetes last year due to pandemic and the restrictions on church gatherings and processions. Street dogs, roof dogs in/near Seis Esquinas where cohetes are very popular, especially during December's Fiesta de Guadalupe, never flinch during cohete outbreaks. Those asleep on sidewalks don't even wake up.

  6. Well I have and Andy is making a valid point. That incline is neither sufficiently steep or sufficiently long to require use of a jake or pac brake. Any properly loaded and maintained truck that approaches that short incline can easily handle it with brakes if approached at an appropriate speed. Same goes for the libremiento in front of WalMart. All the time I see truckers in Mexico driving unsafe and overloaded rigs far too fast. It is very easy to spot one of these trucks by how they sit low on their suspensions and wallow with every bump. Start watching them and it will be obvious pretty quickly because there is zero inspection of very often if not usually overloaded trucks with lousy maintenance of tires and brakes any other safety equipment, no mufflers, untrained and unskilled drivers because of the lack of training. The truck accident rate in this country is atrocious. Truck and bus accidents kill multiple people, including drivers, in this country every day. Because the government is so derelict in performing even the most basic oversight of the trucking industry in this country they are wrecking the roads, killing people, blasting everyone with a bunch of unnecessary noise and pollution. Take a drive on the so called "Pan American Highway", Ruta 45 for a first hand experience in all of the above. I just did. It is a primary truck route and most of it is just simply destroyed and dangerous by the hundreds of trucks that use it. I can't imagine how anyone could ship product over that road without it and the truck arriving with a lot of damage. I don't blame the drivers because the corrupt companies they work for give them the choice of either driving these death traps on wheels or not working at all. And we all know how high unemployment is in this country and how people are desperate for work, any work, that pays them enough to live on. So they get out their and risk their lives, and ours, and wreck the country's roads. Not long ago when this was being debated at some level of government it was the drivers asking for more inspections and weighing. This whole trucking situation in this country, which is typified by this all too common type of accident, is a national disgrace.

  9. "If you have one of the military insurance plans like Tricare For Life they offer some other company insurances that cover overseas." As a vet, I have US VA Healthcare however to qualify for the Tricare part you have to have a service connected disability, which I do not, so a no-go here for me. In any case this thread is about Medicare coverage and has been ploughed through here many times, and unless there is something new, it is a no-go for coverage here.

  10. I clearly stated that we LEARNED what it is in grade 8 along with many other philosophical systems throughout school yers and real life afterwards and if you think that it is being practiced in Canada and the US you haven't learned much .You even had to google and found a very simplistic def of Maxism. At your age it's probably too late to venture forth out of your narrowness. I am a capitalist and was even a politician. My political heroes are John A. MacDonald and Sir Edmund Burke who was the first large C conservative in a democracy as well as being a member of London's Hellfire Club which suggests that he was a libertine as well.

  11. bobby brown doesn't know what marxism is either. Those of us that went to school in Canada, where one learns what's going on in the world and not just our own country learned what Marxism is in grade eight. Being philosophically left of center does not equate to Marxism in the least.

  13. Depends a bit on airline....some have staff check before you enter the line to the counter; others at the counter. Some allow uploads to 3rd party websites, but in any case your test results will be checked before you can get a boarding pass. Printed or on phone. You will also need the attestation form before you get your boarding pass. When you go to security you need the MXN health form, either QR code on form or printed. Try to get your forms done before getting to airport....slow lines caused by those who are filling out various forms. You may want to give yourself some extra time. https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/pdf/Fillable-Attestation-English-p.pdf Here is link to printable health questionnaire required by Mexico. https://www.aeromar.mx/files/Cuestionario_de_viajero.pdf Have not used Walmart for test.

  15. Most all gravel, cement, and other material trucks are overloaded, causing brake failures and road damage, it would be nice and smart if transito would apply there investigations efforts on other violations other than only looking for gringos without seat belts attached. There are so many safety violations on Mexican vehicles its truly dangerous, yet they concentrate on paper work and seat belts, I see so many vehicles with nonfunctioning brake lights which in my opinion is a mortal sin !! I'm venting I need to stop, Drive defensively ⚠️

  16. I would definitely use Oscar. From the simplest job to the most complex he's never let us down. Much better than other upholsterers we've used.

  17. Oscar's work for me has been excellent. I have outdoor cushions with 15 years and the fabric he used has not discolored. Recently had him repad some chair cushions... done right! You might have to wait as he is always backed up with work.

  20. I have the answer - basement suites, build down with earthquake resistant, waterproof, concrete. I turned down a renovation of the Biltmore Hotel in Vancouver. They gutted the whole building, then dug six stories down for a carpark. That is one big hole, taking up one half of a city block. So it can be done, but suites would have no view. Would have to use cybervision

  29. I realize this is slightly off-topic (sorry), but this whole situation and the rather "Wild West" driving conditions finally got us to install our dashcams (front and rear) that had been sitting unused for a while. They're surprisingly pretty cheap for good quality. No it won't prevent any accidents, but it may just save our bacon if we're in one and there is a question of who's at fault. Just my two centavos, but I really recommend them if you drive.

  30. The way I understand it is that SOCIALISM is creeping in the back door of many schools in the US and Canada and this is a precursor to full blown Marxism and yes, Communism. It is one thing to teach this as a lesson to be learned as a historically bad thing to avoid and another to teach with tacit approval. Just look at all the uproar in the U.S. with parents confronting school boards all over the country on the direction of thier kids education. Venezuela once was the most prosperous country in Latin America, sitting on an ocean of oil and capitalism was thriving. Look at it now!!! The guy who took it there was elected TWICE...and many credit a school system that was flat out teaching SOCIALISM that succeeded in brainwashing the the population together with the cooperating media. The country is now a flat out dictatorship with one third of the population fleeing, many to the open southern border of the U.S.

  31. What Is Marxism? Marxism is a social, political, and economic philosophy named after Karl Marx. It examines the effect of capitalism on labor, productivity, and economic development and argues for a worker revolution to overturn capitalism in favor of communism. Is this what they are teaching in Canada??? Yes unfortunately, there, in the US and other countries this is the way they are moving. As a lifelong businessman frankly I do not understand why!!!
