  1. You said in your original post that the study was "peer reviewed". The study's author is a physical therapist, for f's sake. The publication lied about his credentials (or the author did). Why can't you just man-up and apologize for posting misleading information. The "study" was not peer reviewed and you make yourself look very small for defending this misinformation. Please research before you post. It would be a great help to this forum. Waiting for the counterattack. You're not known for any semblance of self-reflection.

  2. You may be able to change the mind of "an" anti-masker. You just won't change the mind of "this" anti-masker. He's pretty much incapable of admitting error or contrition. He just wants to "own the libs". That's the agenda.

  3. Bisbee Gal, Sounds like common sense to me. I do the same. I'm currently waiting for my second Pfizer. We truly do live in a wonderful area where pretty much all restaurants are either outdoors or at least open air. Keep in mind that even after vax you can still get Covid and could still spread it to somebody who might be in a high risk category. Best to follow common sense protocols and keep yourself and others as safe as you can. Alan

  4. The study that MC posted last week about facemasks shows that the author, Baruch Vainshelboim " is listed as part of the cardiology division at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System at Stanford University." "But he has no affiliation with Stanford, according to the university. Stanford School of Medicine spokeswoman Julie Greicius said in a prepared statement that Stanford supports the use of face masks to control the spread of COVID-19." "A LinkedIn account for Vainshelboim lists his profession as a clinical exercise physiologist. He did not respond to a request for comment." "The article appeared in the journal Medical Hypotheses, which its publisher says has the purpose “to publish interesting theoretical papers.” David Gorski, a surgical oncologist who writes about medical misinformation, told The Associated Press the journal publishes "fringe science and hypotheses." Why am I not the least bit surprised. Here's the full article: Fact Check

  6. I like seeing somebody who is approaching me wearing a mask. Here is why. Covid virus is spread primarily through wet particles expelled during speech but more in a cough, sneeze, or loud shouting where a large volume of air is expelled. Wear a double layer mask and from two feet away try to blow out a candle...difficult. Then try it without a mask...easy. Slow motion videos with back lighting show the amount of particulate expelled with vs without mask. I've seen several. It's just physics. Now, there is no excusing folks who wear them under the nose or even the chin or insist on wearing a non washable mask until it's a dirty mess. There are $%&/()s everywhere. Just like the many people who won't get the vaccine but since the start have been promoting herd immunity. Now with herd immunity within reach they won't do their part to make it work. They'll die defending their right to not be told what to do on this issue but when sick with heart conditions, for instance, they will take a doctor's instruction on how to avoid future health problems. They will certainly do what their spouse tells them to do...And I'd bet all of them got vaccinated when they were kids not only because their parents were smarter than they are, but because it was required by school boards everywhere to prevent the unnecessary spread of disease. I really can't explain it... but if you go online you can find "peer reviewed" papers on flat earth, faked moon landing, and the superiority of the male brain. I know that last one isn't true...just ask my wife. Alan

  7. You can never change the mind of an anti-masker. They will spend their days looking up reports that agree with their own misguided logic. We had the same baloney in 1918.... just didn't have the Internet.

  8. You are right. It is a mess and so very disgusting. Never, ever order one and certainly never eat it, not even a taste. If everyone had your eye and palate, food like this would not even exist. We’d have neat and tidy food instead. But the barbarians you are surrounded by eat that dish and actually enjoy it. Can you imagine? Oh, sorry. Obviously not.

  10. So long as Mainecoons uses news sources such as these, I am inclined to discount them. For example: Technocracy News - Media Bias Fact Check mediabiasfactcheck.com › technocracy-news Analysis / Bias In review, Technocracy News frequently publishes conspiracy theories and promotes pseudoscience. Many articles are written by Patrick Wood, with others republished from right-leaning sources such as the questionable Breitbart and conspiracy website Zerohedge .

  11. "In this day and age" being on Facebook is exposing yourself to problems unnecessarily. Official information from the goverment should be available to everyone on their public site. So far, this has been the most confusing situation, ever.

  12. it all sounds very complicated--as an expat here for 14 years now- the U. S. still thinks I live in the U.S.; but I have my Mexican green card. I have no cell phone but I have email. My two daughters check on me from time to time just to see if i'm still alive ( and when they need money); of course, HA. I'm 72 years old and I dought the world will catch me before I will be dead or so senile I will be of no use to the gov't. I guess i'm the type of guy that enjoys to say" NO" and get every body pissed off at me. P.S I caught the so called corona virus and this entity found my enviroment totaly intolerble ;so it died.! And as you can figure I will not be taking any vaccine, i don't do rush jobs; HA--please excuse my spelling as i'm getting tired; HA.

  13. Chapala EXPAT Liaison Published by Harry Bublin · 3m · Last week the regional director of the state board of health told Seminario newspaper that the local second rounds would not allow for first rounds. When he was interviewed by the Guadalajara Reporter he reversed himself and said fir shots would be allowed during the second. What is the truth ? Who knows. The only thing we know is the servidores of the nation are in charge and they haven't told us anything. Secondly, there is a rumor that there will be second round shots in Christiania park this monday. As of 11 a.m. this morning this is fake news! Please do not waste your time and energy until and unless we can get a confirmation. So sorry to be uncertain, but, that is what we are dealing with NO INFORMATION being the status quo. Your friend Hector Espana!

  14. Your constant postings about how cloth masks don't help is based on a false presumption that all cloth masks are some sort of porous, flimsy things that people never wash and don't handle properly. The cloth masks I made myself have an outer layer of tightly woven cotton and an inner layer of double woven black-out fabric. I can hold it under a water tap and the water barely runs through it and super slowly. I have 10, they get washed regularly, never wadded up and stuffed back in a pocket or bag, and I know how to put them on and remove them safely. Saying "cloth masks" is like saying saying "meat". There are many types.

  15. I actually posted three different pieces. That was the first. Since you want to start this again, chew on this: https://www.technocracy.news/masks-are-neither-effective-nor-safe-a-summary-of-the-science/ https://thepalmierireport.com/7-studies-that-say-masks-are-ineffective/ Settled science it ain't. And "fact checks" from known biased sources are about as useful as those cloth masks. Have fun.

  22. When a reader goes to Forums to access the general forum they need to scroll down the list to forums dedicated to specialized topics. If they are not interested enough to do that they are not a likely customer. I access through “Unread Content” which shows everything I have not read and includes all forums. Also, Facebook has several groups dedicated to local food and restaurants. Many local restaurants post in these groups regularly, some every day.

  29. Muchas gracias! Yes, I went there and bought the exact right size, and it has a lift up lid that closes air tight. I am sure that this is the best for keeping the dry food as fresh as possible. Also they had scoops, 2 sizes...the large one perfect for us. Chiquita Banana and El Duque thank you.

  32. It was back in 1997, when I first got a landline from Telmex. My home # was quite small. It was a total of not 10 numbers as it is today, but of 5 numbers and you were charged when making long distance calls from Ajijic to Joco. However, it was free to phone closer cities like San Antonio and Chapala. The phone numbers in Ajijic all started with the number 6 followed by a unique 4 digit number assigned to you. In Chapala the first number was always 5 followed by a unique 4 digit # to each Telmex phone client. I don't remember what it cost to phone the states in the 90s, but it was quite expensive.

  33. gringohombre the vast majority of us using Telmex have the combo plan. It is nothing new. Also I note that my Telmex cost has not increased from $389 in at least 15 years. While the internet service has gotten better, calls to cell phones became free, free calls to the USA & Canada (as well as many other countries) are all now included. How many countries in the world can you get internet & telephone for such a low price. As to customer service most of us have no problem. So sorry you do.... My son recently had service installed in a new house. He called the 800 number techs were at his new house in 2 days with new fiberoptic installation done quickly.

  34. Here on the ribera de Chapala expatriates have been calling cicadas rainbirds for more than 40 years that I know of (they are not birds). Some Canadians call electricity hydro (it is not hydraulic) Mexicans in this area call electricity luz (it is not light) Albaniles in the Chapala refer to an electric cutting tool as a grillo (cricket) which it is not. People lakeside refer to any foreigner as a gringo (many do not fit the definition of gringo) My sister in law... everybody calls her flaca which she hasn't been for 50 years. I am referred to as anciano .. well that could be correct. So yes when the rainbirds sing the rain is 3 weeks away. No they are not birds. No they are not rain. No they don't sing ,, so what.......

  35. I very recently visited for the first time, a small tennis and swim club in GDL that was built from scratch last year by a local family. They included a large steam room as part of the facilities. This is not a posh facility and I am fairly certain they spent their money very carefully in constructing it. Not making any promises, but I will likely be joining the club for at least a month, and if you like I can try to get the contact info for whoever built the steam room.

  38. Maybe because when they first moved here someone told them the story and they found it to be an interesting, quirky, part of local lore. The fact that these are insects and not birds but are called birds is the quirkiest part of the story. They share it because it is part of this place, their experience of living here. What I don’t understand is why this silly, quirky, local story that amuses most people annoys you so much.

  39. True, but it also depends much of the school/city/time etc. The public schools in my neighborhood in gdl are really bad quality and to be honest, it will make your life much harder further on the road in the University. So my kids are going to a private school. Especially in the beginning it was economically hard for us but it is worth it. Especially now this past year with the pandemic they only missed about one week of school, the week of March 17th 2020 when they closed all the schools. It took our school about 3 days to start with the online classes while public schools in our area basically never got any lessons anymore for the rest of the schoolyear. Now, our kids are physically back to school since March while public schools are still with online classes. At the public schools they would be way behind compared to the private school and totally not prepared for the university even without the pandemic. My Mexican wife went to a private school for the same reason, only the university she went to a public one which was better, but she wouldn't be able to enter the public university if she went to a public school first because she would be way below the needed grades. While on the other hand family in Mazatlan went to public schools that were good quality there and they even got english classes which in that time was rare for public schools. So it totally depends on where and when you go to a public school. Is it possible with public schools to get a good life? Sure. But depending on the quality of the public school it will make your life so much harder or easier. And in many cases it makes your life harder.

  40. I know 2 doctors, an engineer, and an architect who came from a poor family whose divorced mother was a maid and all went public school through high school. You do not need to go to a private school to move out of poverty. You need desire and hard work.

  43. I think it all balances out. I live in Mexico full time but own a house in Canada and pay a lot of income tax there. When I file my return, there is even a section that is telling me how much I owe for my contribution to the health care system. I don't use any of the benefits that you are talking about but I do get my Canada Pension, which is not a handout but a pension I paid into all my life. So, I am paying for people who are using the system, just as there might be people who are using the system and not paying. I feel lucky to be in this position at this time of my life. Canada has been good to me and no, I'm not "tired of paying for them".
