  1. Children don't live alone, they have families. Here's what my oldest daughter in Toronto told my 14 year old granddaughter back in March when she and her husband were already working from home and isolating and the 14 year old was sneaking out of the house to go hang out with her friends: "Look, if you get this virus, you probably won't get very sick, you might not even show any symptoms. But if you bring this virus into our home, your father and I could die." Additionally, children aren't going to be diligent about washing their hands, they don't have consciousness to keep their hands off things out in public that could be contaminated, they put their hands on their faces, in their mouths, pick their noses. They constantly touch and fuss with their masks when they wear them. They aren't being "discriminated against".

  4. Thank you, Rick. I love when people who have chosen to live in the central highlands of Mexico bitch about how food here is not as good as what they had in the country they came from. Sometimes they have not even tried it. They just look at the picture and commence criticizing.

  5. Isn't slowing the spread a good idea, because you're not going to stop the spread. Slowing the spread until a vaccine is readily available seems the only alternative. .................................................................................... It's a great idea. The studies tell us that to do so we need to wear a mask, wash your hands, maintain social distancing, avoid crowded spaces and large gatherings. For months we have heard "follow the science" The science does not tell us closing a tennis court, a park, a malecon will do anything to slow the spread. It didn't work the last 3 times, it won't work this time. What will work is wear a mask ( correctly and don't touch it except the ear straps to remove it ) ,wash your hands, maintain social distancing, avoid crowded spaces and large gatherings.

  6. Go ahead and mention me, IDGAF. I have walked the malecon 2 or 3 times a day for years. It is the fastest, level-most walking route from my home to Ajijic downtown. Now that it's closed, I walk the paseo next to it. YOU sound like the patrols you mentioned----why do YOU care so much about what others are doing. I was going shopping on Saturday, as was @Mostlylost this AM at Walmart. BTW I walked the paseo again today, TWICE. This AM, a police car drove by me, I waved, they waved back.

  8. No one has outlawed children going out. This is a temporary measure designed to slow the spread of a pandemic. Like temporay evacuation orders when there are hurricane and forest fire threats.

  9. There are many laws which are put into place based on the statistics. Young men have the highest rate of vehicle accidents, therefore their car insurance rates are the highest of any demographic. Plenty of young men are careful, considerate drivers but they are still "discriminated against" in this way. Children in the US and Canada have to be in car seats, the type of car seat dependent on their weight. If they aren't and the police see that, the driver will be fined. Is it discriminating that the 3 year old can't simply wear a seat belt like the adults and their older siblings? What I do think is absurd is to mandate all this pandemic stuff, yet allow tourists and weekenders to travel and stroll around for what are obviously non-essential reasons. But that is up to local officials to enforce. The governor can make the rules, whether you think he is doing it for the common good or not, but he can't be everywhere making sure they are followed.

  10. The malecón is all cordoned off but the tourist market along the malecón is jam packed with people. I understand what they are trying to do to not hurt the merchants but at the same time discourage large numbers of tourists but al fin de cuentas it makes no sense at all to do it this way. The plazas and malecones, al aire libre, are the safest places to be during this pandemic. They should keep them open. They are forcing people to congregate in their small crowed homes and party there with poor little grandma hiding out in the back room. It makes no sense.

  12. Just an update...SUCCESS!!! Muchas gracias CHILLIN!!! I picked up the batteries that he graciously offered me for my golf cart and had them charged and checked out by Jamie who gave the greenlight and had Armando, my mechanic come to install. He found that there not one, but 2 of the batteries (out of the 6) were malo, so thankfully my gift of the 2 were perfect. I charged overnight and have been test driving over the past couple of days and running like a race horse!!! Now I am waiting for Adelita's to resume the wonderful Sat. and Mon. music nights so I can take it on the short trip there and more importantly get me home in good shape. After a few vino tintos, walking back home can be an adventure with those pesky cobblestones jumping up and hitting you in the face. Seriously, it happened to me once!!! I would also like to thank the lovely Mrs. CHILLIN for her help. Another chapala.com success story!!!

  14. "All or nothing" polices never succeed. Instead they instill mistrust of government generally. Remember the 1920's Prohibition Act? How'd that work out? Remember the 1980's "Just Say No" drug policy? By the 80's, smoking your first joint in HS was a rite of passage and this policy was laughed at. Remember the 1990's "Sexual Abstinence" Sex-Ed curriculum? Hormones made short work of that. The right approach is harm mitigation. I.e., separate use/possession of pot from hard drugs; teach teens about safe sex, STD's, birth control options; regulate alcohol sales, pass DUI laws and tax the crap out of it. Same with a pandemic. There are known safe activities of various degrees. We all know what they are. Individuals will determine their personal safety zone. Some choose to stay at home 24-7, some choose to go to bars, indoor restaurants or airports. My personal comfort zone is somewhere in-between. BTW, nice walk this AM along deserted village streets, never got within 20 feet of anyone (though I continue to mask-up when outdoors). fyi, Dr. Anthony Fauci and his wife power-walk a few miles every evening. He's 80. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/16/white-house-advisor-dr-anthony-fauci-power-walks-with-wife-to-relax.html

  15. The government can do basically nothing to stop the spread. This study, which was published in the Wiley Online Library on Jan. 5, researchers examined COVID case growth across 10 countries to determine how beneficial various precautionary measures proved to be, specifically looking at more restrictive measures like lock downs and business closures. Researchers compared COVID cases in England, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and the U.S.—all of which instituted mandatory stay-at-home orders and business closures—to South Korea and Sweden, which only implemented voluntary personal precautions. The findings showed there is "no clear, significant" benefit to lock downs and business closures. After comparing the countries with more restrictive measures to those with less restrictive measures, it was clear to the researchers that there is "no clear, significant beneficial effect of more restrictive measures on case growth in any country." Their findings suggest that mandatory lock downs don't significantly stop the spread more than personal measures like social distancing and mask-wearing. "We do not question the role of all public health interventions, or of coordinated communications about the epidemic, but we fail to find an additional benefit of stay-at-home orders and business closures," the authors concluded. Wear a mask, wash your hands, avoid prolonged close contact.

  16. Just an observation, it is my understanding the seniors living in multigenerational extended family households are tending to get covid from younger family members. That being the case, confining them to their homes where the exposure risk is greatest doesn't feel like a very good control strategy. I suspect one of the reasons older expats here have had almost no cases is they don't live in these types of family situations. Also the expat community is very aware of the more effective control strategies like mask wearing around others and social distancing. I'm told there is a move afoot to get an amparo against the over 60 lockdown and blocking from shopping as this appears to clearly violate the First Amendment to the Mexican Constitution which specifically prohibits discrimination based on age. Finally, another observation, given that Mexicans were not willing to give up holiday gatherings with family and others I wonder if the current spike is related to the holiday behavior and would have tended to abate with the previous measures.

  17. Why all this debating?. The governor has asked us all to follow his guidelines in order to save lives and not over burden the healthcare system here. Same as every other country around the world. Can you please stop with all the bickering and opinions, it really doesn't matter what any of thinks....the virus is here, it's spreading quickly and there is no immediate fix in the near future. We are all very fortunate to be retired and don't have to endure going out to work, having to work from home, having to homeschool children. Please show a little maturity and stop the nonsense. Be kind to yourself and to others who might just be having a very hard time with all this.....

  19. And Mostlylost is correct again on the translation of se deben. Yes, it is often translated into English as either should or must. But take note it is not the hardcore version of must but much closer to should. When things in Spanish are absolutely mandatory they generally say tienen que or se los obligan or another version of obligar.

  20. Actually nowhere in the rules does it say stores are not to admit people over 60. The rules as posted on the Jalisco govt say people over 60 should stay in their house and that personal responsibility is the key. If someone tries to deny me service I will show them the webpage on my phone and ask them in a polite manner ...where does it say you are supposed to enforce my personal responsibility?

  23. Food is a subject dear to my stomach, so I appreciate it when someone tells how to make a dish perhaps better. I don't think country of origin matters. A chili cheese hot dog is a simple dish to make and I am surprised many Lakeside aren't doing it. CBGUY said it was good for him and this is all that matters. The fries do look good and I'm sure I will give this restaurant a try. Who knows I might talk them into melting the cheese and putting a little more chili on mine.

  28. Common sense should tell one that if most of the elderly in this country are getting covid at home as a result of prolonged contact with younger family members that bring the illness home with them, that illegally putting the elderly under house arrest and denying them their basic right to go out and get the things they need while properly wearing masks and maintaining distance is probably not going to do anything good for the elderly or anyone else. I suggest getting a clue by reading up on covid transmission in multi-generational households, of which Mexico has in very large numbers. And while you're at it, read and understand the First Amendment to the Mexican Constitution. It is very specific in stating age discrimination is illegal. Also, suggest a review of the classic definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. That certainly seems to describe the history of these endless lockdowns.

  30. Alfaro was doing OK with his earlier attempts to slow the spread, encourage masks, prepare hospitals, etc. But when he issued lockdowns during the Christmas holidays for only GDL and PV, he basically sent people from those highly infected areas to areas with low infection rates, including Chapala for 17 days of non-stop partying. The result of this misguided policy is already showing in jumps in our local infection rates.

  36. Call it what you will, both have very grey areas. Why even consider the pits falls and ensuing problems and issues. If the deal seems to good to be true.. There have been issues in San Juan Cosala about.Ejido/Communal land. The person in question thought he was dealing with "The Official" committee only to find latter, another Representative pop's up out of the wood work to say He and his family are the Official Reprentatives...its a can of worms...but maybe you like adventure. Believe me when I say that not all Mexicans in the Pueblos are angels and will just as easy screw their neighbors as they would you.. An other "Legal" example. You see a property say in Chapala and go to do the deal, and find out that there are say 6/7 siblings on the deed, but your contract and local family member says they have all agreed to sell it, great. But wait... half of those people are in the USA and you can not contact them. But the deal goes ahead as the Notaria has all the signatures...Wrong a couple of those siblings in the uSA did not wish to sell nor were they consulted by the local siblings..... and will look for retribution .....did you come to Mexico for that BS? Now I await the thousands who will post and boast "I did a deal like that OK"...great you get to keep the trophy cup

  45. You are in luck, maybe, I have two Trojan T125 Mileage Maker, 6 volt batteries you can have for free. These sell for over $250 each in Mexico. They are old, but have never been used, don't show any bulging. I think if you had them serviced by someone who knows what they are doing, they will give you years of service. You need to find someone who knows how to boil charge the battery to clean the plates. Trojans have serious thick lead plates especially to handle full charges. These are heavy by the way, I am going to guess about 50 lbs each. PM me to get a phone number and arrange for pickup. I live in Chapala Haciendas.
