  1. Best to reject. They are tryng to get you to accept a worse exchange rate.

  2. The conversion rate is not determined by the bank unless you accept the bank's rate if asked. The conversion rate is determined by the company that processes the transaction for your Visa or Mastercard. Look on your card and there might be a name of the networks your card uses. The ATM will have a network that matches (sometimes posted on the ATM) At the top of the "pyramid" are national networks Plus (Visa) and Cirrus (MasterCard). At the next level there are networks such as NYCE, Jeanie, Star (East and West), Mac, Quest, Pulse and others. The ATM you use has no way of changing the network's rate unless they offer an option to use the dynamic rate and you accept it. You could go to Banorte, HSBC, Bancomer, CI Banco or anywhere and it is the same rate on the same day. You can get a very good estimate before you go at the Visa or Mastercard websites https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/convert-currency.html https://usa.visa.com/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html/

  3. Got caught up in that traffic jam...hours of stop and go traffic. Looked like a demolition derby. Attention in driving is paramount, a split second of inattention can result in a disaster; no cell phones, no taking eyes off the road, focus must be 100%.

  4. We went to the San Antonio Hospital one night and we were well taken care of. We have also been to the Ajijic Clinic and were well taken care of there too.

  5. We've had to visit the SAT hospital for emergencies twice in the past year. One was minor; the other involved surgery and a multiple day hospitalization. Each time, the care and service was excellent and the facilities were very clean. The overall costs were a bit higher than other options in the area and Guadalajara. I don't know that it would be my first choice for an elective or scheduled procedure, but I'm glad to have it around as an option.

  8. We have had nothing but good experiences at SAT hospital. Please don't even compare it to the former Maskaras clinic nor Ajijic clinic. Big difference between a REAL hospital and mere clinics. Judging from most of the posts on here, it has been made quite clear that SAT is good at what they do for a small hospital. and I for one am glad they are here. Good luck clinic users! pedro kertesz

  11. The Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) or cardholder preferred currency (CPC) is a process whereby the amount of a Visa or MasterCard transaction is converted by a merchant or ATM to the currency of the payment card's country of issue at the point of sale. It is totally legal and, in some financial situations or currencies, it could be favorable. To us, here and now, it is not. It's been worldwide for years; in Mexico in several ATMS for the last two or more. In this financial market, it is best to decline the DCC rate. The button to do so is on the very bottom, on the opposite side of the ATM screen (left) from the buttons you push to make your typical cash withdrawal. Sometimes these are marked; at other times, they are not, so you have to know where to push to decline. FYI, the difference, right now, is significant.

  12. They offer a lower exchange rate. DECLINE it. Yesterday they offered an exchange rate of about 20 and I declined it and my bank gave me 22.3. It’s save me $25 of what they were offering at the exchange rate.

  13. Same here. Although going north on Lopez Mateos, right around where the outlet stores are, there was what looked like at least a 6 car pileup. From what we could see driving by going south there were 2 or 3 cars that had their front ends under the rear of the car in front of them. Typical going too fast, following too close, and not paying attention.

Available here are massage and rolfing. Join the facebook group Ajijic Chapala Spirit Yoga and Wellness Circle and contact Doug Reid for suggestions. Sweat lodges here on occasion.

  18. Your opossum looks big enough to be on its own. Just turn loose in a safe rural area. Interesting fact, Opossums eat up to 10,000 ticks a year. At my farm I put out table scraps to feed one. Every night it checks to see if I put any thing out. I now have a lot less ticks so I am glad to have it around.

  19. I'm getting confused here I keep on seeing Telmex being compared to AT&T.
    1 point
  20. There is little doubt that in most of Mexico especially outside of metro areas, and lakeside the actual coverage of Telcel is better with fewer blind areas. But since AT&T bought up a couple of companies they have been working to expand their network and to compete with Telcel. Both offer various options of pre-paid as well as monthly contract plans. Depending on an individuals needs one might be better than the other for pricing. When traveling in the US with a Telmex Canada/USA/ Mexico plan Telmex uses the T-Mobile network which is not always the best coverage in the USA outside of metro areas.

  23. The new hospital on the Libramiento looks close to open. I hope it will conform more to what is considered a hospital then the San Antonio Hospital/Maskaras Clinic. I worked for over 30 years in a hospital. That pension allows me to live here. OK, let me have it.

  25. Bottom line is the best hospital care is still in GDL. When you look at it impartially, though, the care available here is far higher than usually found in such small population centers located adjacent to a major city.

  26. FYI the owner of the National Enquirer is a personal friend/fixer of the Peach Pompodour. Now, while no one who can read would mistake the New York Times for being leftist leaning rag, and in that respect it is akin to the National Enquirer, but even you would have to admit as far as gossip that it may or may not print, in no way does it rise to the level of the National Enquirer for it's creativity.

  27. Why don't you wait and see if this is anything other than some idea some nameless bureaucrat has that will never get beyond the draft stage? Doesn't fit the agenda to do so? These days the NYT reminds me more of the National Inquirer, printing gossip from unnamed sources, than it does the formerly great paper that it was. The Times says it has copies of some parts of the draft. That part is well below the sensational headline as usual. Certainly both the U.S. and Canada have a legitimate concern about the CV situation here and the inability of the weak public health system to cope with it. If anyone has crossed by land recently, was there any sort of health check like taking temperatures or other sanitary measures?

  28. From today’s NYtimes https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/10/world/americas/mexico-coronavirus-hospitals.html?action=click&module=Top Stories&pgtype=Homepage Aug. 10, 2020Updated 9:02 a.m. E “Papito, breathe!” his wife screamed. “Please breathe.” Within an hour, Mr. Bailón was dead. Mexico is battling one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the world, with more than 52,000 confirmed deaths, the third-highest toll of the pandemic. And its struggle has been made even harder by a pervasive phenomenon: a deeply rooted fear of hospitals. The problem has long plagued nations overwhelmed by unfamiliar diseases. During the Ebola epidemic in 2014, many in Sierra Leone believed that hospitals had become hopeless death traps, leading sick people to stay home and inadvertently spread the disease to their families and neighbors. Here in Mexico, a similar vicious cycle is taking place. As the pandemic crushes an already weak health care system, with bodies piling up in refrigerated trucks, many Mexicans see the Covid ward as a place where only death awaits — to be avoided at all cost. ADVERTISEMENT Continue reading the main story The consequences, doctors, nurses and health ministers say, are severe. Mexicans are waiting to seek medical care until their cases are so bad that doctors can do little to help them. Thousands are dying before ever seeing the inside of a hospital, government data show, succumbing to the virus in taxis on the way there or in sickbeds at home. Fighting infections at home may not only spread the disease more widely, epidemiologists say, but it also hides the true toll of the epidemic because an untold number of people die without ever being tested — and officially counted — as coronavirus victims.
