  1. Well, here in t USA we have almost 50% Republican voters who support DTrump by doing as he does: going sans mask, ignoring distancing, & denying any risk of Covid for them and theirs. You see these folks are TheEntitledOnes, so they just know they'll not be affected by Covid. It'll be the 'other guys' who'll be infected, so why would they care...And, they don't care...'. Ghastly people !! The USA is very Sick...in more ways than one. I am sad to see it. The EU may ban flights from America, & they should hurry it up for their own sake.

  2. There are well known virus strains for which no vaccine yet exists. To assume a viable, affordable. and widely available vaccine is just around the corner is perhaps premature. To assume the world can stay in lock down until then is also not realistic. Deaths from Covid 19 can easily be counted. Increases in poverty, hunger, crime, depression, suicide, domestic violence, substance abuse, etc. as a result of prolonged isolation are not so easily measured but can be just as deadly. I really hope a miraculous discovery comes soon that lets the world begin to heal but my short term plans are to continue doing what I can do to keep safe, do constructive work, and help others. Those are things I can sort of control. That might be all any of us can do in the future. Alan

  4. My experience with ILOX has been a nightmare. It began in early 2018, when ILOX requested 300 Lakeside residents interested in their new fiber-optics internet system to sign up and provide “seed money” before they would begin installation. I bit. I was among the first to sign up, opted for the most expensive option, the one with the most TV stations, and paid for a year in advance. My neighbor did the same. We knew it was a calculated risk. I paid cash. ILOX does not have any of my credit card numbers. This becomes important later. At the time, I was told the numerous TV channels included many English language ones, including the basic ABC, CBS, and NBC. This was a priority for me. It was, I later learned, a lie. The request for 300 backers was met and installation began. As for a completion date, I was told to be patient; it would take a while for the fibre-optics to be installed. But since I had showed my support early on and lived on the carretera in Ajijic I would be among the first served. Being a realist, however,I did not have expectations this would happen before 2019. I watched as ILOX vehicles began their work in central Ajijic. Then I began hearing reports of satisfied customers getting “hooked up.” It’s coming! I thought. And then I watched the ILOX vehicles pass by my carretera address and move westward. After a few weeks, my neighbor and I went to the ILOX office where a “customer service rep” looked at our papers and said, “Two months.” We explained we knew new customers were getting priority service over us. He repeated, “Two months.” We obediently waited the two months and returned. Another “customer service rep” looked at our papers and repeated, “Two more months.” We became angry and insistent. She took our papers again, looked confused, and asked, “You are neighbors?” “Yes.” “In Ajijic?” she asked. “Yes! Look at our addresses!” She then noticed instead of being coded AJ for Ajijic and my account number, I had been coded JC for Jocotepec and my neighbor had been coded CH for Chapala. Because those towns are at the far ends of the installment, they would be served last. That is why the reps repeated “Two months.” It was a safe estimation. These errors caused a long, unnecessary, frustrating wait to get installed. A nice way to treat an early investor. The installer came the next day. I was prioritized. That’s the least they could do after their screw-ups. It was June 2019, 16 months, many unnecessary, after I signed up. He instructed me how to transfer my existing TelMex number to ILOX. It didn’t work. At the subsequent ILOX office visit, I discover I had been assigned an ILOX number but had not been informed of that. As for TV coverage, the numerous English language channels were hardly numerous. And, of course, the networks I had specifically asked about (ABC, CBS, NBC) were not included. So, I had to investigate streaming services as an add-on. Adding that expense did not bother me; being lied to did. WiFi TV streaming service was added. Their installer/technician was helpful, courteous, and professional. And, for the first while, things seemed OK. Then buffering problems, and other snags, appeared. At first the technician was puzzled. Then he saw a pattern. His other customers who, like me, had piggy-backed WiFi TV onto ILOX had the same problems. Those with other internet providers did not. He figured out what the problems were and tried working with ILOX. But the problems returned. It was, needless to say irritating and frustrating. And then COVID-19 invaded the world. With everyone quarantined at home and locked-down, internet, TV, and streaming services, were over-loaded. They simply could not meet the constant demand. I had constant buffering from March through June. Of the 21 channels I had marked as “Favorites,” I generally could receive 3-5 without initial buffering. But even those, would begin to buffer every three-to-five seconds after perhaps twenty minutes. The technician has done some experimenting and has discovered that although ILOX’s speed is quite fast, other internet providers with considerably slower speeds do not have the buffering problem. It appears the difference is the source of the internet provider’s signal. I’m not technologically savvy; I don’t really understand the whats and whys, but I knew what I had to do. I dropped ILOX as my provider this week as my paid-for year was ending. But days before I did that, I received an emailed bill for the next month’s service. Obviously, they couldn’t bill a credit card, because they had no number. In cancelling, the rep asked for a cell phone number. “Why would I give you that?” I asked. “I’m cancelling. You have my email address.” The rep looked at me dumbfounded. Because I recently have moved, I am using the existing provider and getting better reception. But I am also experimenting with another option. After what I went through, is it no wonder that I do not recommend ILOX as an internet provider?

  5. Good idea. Have you tried a little shaving cream on the lenses then dry wipe clean? It's a trick to keep the bathroom mirror from fogging up that has worked for me on my glasses.

  6. My sis lives in Chapala, & I try to stay with her at least 3 months out of the year. Love my Sister. Now GH, apparently I offended you,, I apologize. I was surprised at your response. I then read my post; I still don't understand what irked you so. Please share. As I certainly did not intend any sort of 'insult'. Perhaps I am not supposed to post when I am not in Chapala, & if that is so, plz let me know. Thank you. Oh, and thank you for that very warm welcome😷.

  7. There are a handful of states in the US with laws stating that one must wear a mask when out in the public. WA state, where I am right now, has just declared it a misdemeanor not to wear a mask when out in the public. And they declared that this law goes into effect later this week and that it will be enforced.

  10. This is somewhat related to the "will they come back" thread that went political and had to be closed. https://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-blogs/future-of-travel/?fbclid=IwAR3I2q7ALx2kn7CRTbY_zVjssxheOFDj5WCd_ARleIZo6vYQPMrBzC_-2Jw Been a lot of discussion about travel in our household For me the big issue is airplane travel. It is a fact airlines cannot operate profitably below 80 percent occupancy. Given how crowded the seating on planes is now I can't envision how one could fly at a reasonable risk level. It was airplane travel, after all, that really turned this into a world wide pandemic in a matter of weeks. Many if not most of our seasonal visitors fly here. How can they come without substantial risk to themselves and to us when they get here? Tough question.

  14. I have tried soap on the lens, folded kleenex and glasses on top of the mask and nothing has worked well. I may have found the answer. Paper surgical tape. A tape strip on both top sides of the mask overlapping at the center seems to work. I was even able to gently peel the mask off and put it back on later. 😁

  15. Yes, I should have. But I was too lazy. So far, no signs of the Corona Virus and it's been almost 13 days. To protect me, though, I did take the recommended Corona anti-virus treatment and it seems to be working. In fact they provided the anti virus treatment on the plane for all business/first class passengers for free. Oh, Eric the treatment, and so for it has been working is 2 corona beers per day.

  25. Just to provide a balance. I've had ILOX for a little over a year with very few problems. My speeds are as advertised (100Mbps) and there have been few outages. I find the pricing very reasonable - $629.00 per month. My suggestion has always been NOT to buy the TV package. There is a new service called Directv Go in Mexico. It's about $13.00 US per month and has quite a few English language channels. https://www.unocero.com/entretenimiento/cine-y-tv/directv-go-servicio-streaming-mexico/ You can also subscribe to Sling TV, Hulu Live, YouTube TV, Fubo TV, etc.... if you use the right VPN. The only thing I found disappointing was the modem supplied by ILOX. It has a very weak wifi signal but I took care of the problem by purchasing a WiFi Router on Amazon for about $80 US.

  27. Can't comment on how the Edge browser update works with 7, however it seems to be working nicely with Windows 10 on my laptop, and is a definite improvement over the previous version. I was a long time Chrome user until a couple of years ago, got fed up several aspects of it, particularly with the significant issues on trying to find, understand, and manage all the different privacy settings and data collections they build into it.

  35. Your response got me interested in learning about vaccine types. Any idea why drug companies are focused on experimental methods (mRNA and DNA methods) that are yet to be proven, instead of attempting to create a vaccine with weakened, dead or inactivated forms of the virus? According to my limited reading, no RNA or DNA vaccines are currently approved for human use, but some DNA vaccines are available for veterinary use.

  39. Please...I am just stating MY preference and I am sure many expats here also. I LOVE Mexico and its exqusite cuisine. For instance one of my favorite dishes is the chile relleno de queso. Now, that is a very spicy chile with the somewhat bland white Mexican cheese inside...good, because there is some contrast. However, as some of us like to eat plain cheese and crackers, we prefer a more SHARP cheese. The one I found at that deli IS Mexican, but my point is that this is rare and I wanted to make others aware of it. Do I make my point? Please, don't be sad!

  40. Thanks for this. Just went to check the gallon of alcohol gel I bought at Costco about 2 months ago and thankfully it's manufactured by a company called Aerobal. I wonder how much of the hand sanitizer they squirt on you when you enter stores is the bad stuff. I use it as little as possible anyway. I have some in my car, but I also carry a gallon of water and soap. And I only use soap and water at home.
