  1. MC, this info is brand new, it hasn't been diced or sliced yet. Take it for what it is worth. It is straight from the doctors on the scene. OK, here is some specific Mexico News for perspective - at least on how the state government is handling it. Look at the MX map in the article, which gives state total deaths for MX. Note that Jalisco now has ONLY 52 deaths, very close to the totals for Yucatan, Guanajuato, and Oaxaca, states I dearly love. But Jalisco, with 2 major metropolitan areas has a far larger population! So, we are doing very well here, TX to Gob. Alfaro and Moy. Stricter measures do work! Quintana Roo, with one major metro area - Cancun - has triple the death rate of Jalisco with Puerto Vallarta not to mention GDL. https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/coronavirus/flu-season-could-bring-new-challenge/

  3. As businesses all over the world are contemplating or actually reopening during an ongoing viral pandemic, many people have let down their guards hoping it is all over with, and imagining we can all just get back to normal. Some have stupidly played down the severity of the CV virus. Here is a bit of the latest info on CV. We are all in uncharted territory with this disease, and the highest cautions must be observed until the overall situation is actually safe, not safe only in your dreams. Kudos to Gov. Alfaro of Jalisco and Moy Anaya of Chapala for implementing strict precautions and blockades to help keep our area safe. Doctors keep discovering new ways the virus attacks the body. “Often it attacks the lungs, but it can also strike anywhere from the brain to the toes. Many doctors are focused on treating the inflammatory reactions it triggers and its capacity to cause blood clots, even as they struggle to help patients breathe,” Lenny Bernstein and Ariana Eunjung Cha report. “More than four months of clinical experience across Asia, Europe and North America has shown the pathogen does much more than invade the lungs. ‘No one was expecting a disease that would not fit the pattern of pneumonia and respiratory illness,’ said David Reich, a cardiac anesthesiologist and president of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. It attacks the heart, weakening its muscles and disrupting its critical rhythm. It savages kidneys so badly some hospitals have run short of dialysis equipment. It crawls along the nervous system, destroying taste and smell and occasionally reaching the brain. It creates blood clots that can kill with sudden efficiency and inflames blood vessels throughout the body. … “Many scientists have come to believe that much of the disease’s devastation comes from two intertwined causes. The first is the harm the virus wreaks on blood vessels, leading to clots that can range from microscopic to sizable. Patients have suffered strokes and pulmonary emboli as clots break loose and travel to the brain and lungs. … The second is an exaggerated response from the body’s own immune system, a storm of killer ‘cytokines’ that attack the body’s own cells along with the virus as it seeks to defend the body from an invader. … Inflammation of those endothelial cells lining blood vessels may help explain why the virus harms so many parts of the body, said Mandeep Mehra, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School … That means defeating covid-19 will require more than antiviral therapy, he said. ‘What this virus does is it starts as a viral infection and becomes a more global disturbance to the immune system and blood vessels — and what kills is exactly that,’ Mehra said. ‘Our hypothesis is that covid-19 begins as a respiratory virus and kills as a cardiovascular virus.’”

  7. Guadalajara Reporter 16 hrs · Physician reports Covid-19 cases in Chapala Although official records show no confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the municipality of Chapala, a well-respected local doctor begs to differ, citing personal experience as both attending physician and patient of the disease. Dr. Lupita Cevallos, a general practitioner who has lived and worked at lakeside for the past 11 years, tells the Guadalajara Reporter that she had contact with a patient showing severe symptoms of SARS-Cov-2 infection on April 14. The person was airlifted to a Texas hospital where the diagnosis was confirmed 72 hours later, she says. Understanding the risks, Cevallos immediately put herself into self-isolation. She began feeling Covid-19 symptoms 10 days later. She says she has been tested for the disease twice since then. An oral PCR test applied at the Jocotepec Community Hospital on April 25 came back negative. A nasopharyngeal PCR test practiced three days later at an authorized private laboratory in Guadalajara was also negative, but Cevallos says a blood serum test for IgG antibodies suggested that she had been exposed to the disease and is not currently infectious. After recovering from her symptoms and regaining her strength, the doctor returned to work at her Integrity health clinic in Ajijic on Monday, May 11. She reports that her Covid-19 patient remains in intensive care in Texas. Through contact tracing she has determined that none of her other patients have contracted the disease. “People need to know that they can have the disease and still be negative in the tests. It is definitely happening in the area,” she concludes. (This is a summary of an extensive article to be published in the next edition of The Reporter.)

  9. There are forms you need to complete and requirements you need to meet to be able to declare non-residency. We did it 20 years ago so not up to date on that. But I CAN tell you that unless you spend 180 days a year in Canada you are breaking the law trying to keep medical intact. Two friends --- BC and Ontario --- both got "caught" via passport entry info shared with medical system. One had to pay back benefits received. (Deceased now and can't remember if was before or after "permanente" system) Other (permanente) is now being chased by provincial medical system involved via collection agency, and the next step could be worse (and for that reason is not leaving Mexico any time soon!)

  10. We had our roof done over the past two days. Our contractor was Juan Gutierrez and we have used him for major and minor jobs at our house. His prices are very reasonable. For the new part of our roof which he did using both membrane and impermebilizante, for 64m2, he charged 57 per m2, a total of $3648 pesos. His phone number is 333-727-0071.

  11. Last Thursday we fed 180 hungry people in Santa Cruz east of Chapala. Tomorrow, Wednesday, we begin cooking for 200, same hungry village. Next week a different village. There are so many hungry people out there... A billion thanks to all those who are helping.. We have 4 volunteers in the kitchen at Bobby's la Terraza this Wednesday aside from my incredible staff...plus Mr Bill King is paying for the ingredients this week and helping to transport it and serve.. Many thanks to all out there who are helping us feed the hungry along with the many other groups who are doing the same or similar.. when was the last time you were hungry or had nothing for your family to eat? We must help these people

  18. Thanks for all your advice, we purchased one on Mercado Libre and had our Handy Man install it. Total we paid was $1650 which included installation. The well known company quoted on here for the same exact product and service wanted $3850. What a rip off. 19. Ironically just before all this got rolling our kids took us to one of those all inclusive mega hotel places in Huatulco. Thinking back on it I can't imagine how a place like that can possibly function even with minimal requirements for social distancing and mask wearing. There is just constant human contact and proximity in these places. Truthfully we didn't much care for it because of this, big crowds are just not our style. Until this thing is really under control, and that means a vaccine or so many people getting it that herd immunity occurs among the survivors. I wouldn't even walk in the front door of one of these places.

  21. We had a similar situation on our roof here in Chapala.....they were taking off the old membranes and found a crack almost all the way through where someone did not tie an addition to the original building....therefore with the ground movements over the years there was at least a one inch separation!!! No way to see this until old roof was worked on! Our contactor made "staples" out of rebar and tied it all back together, then cemented it in before he could do our wonderful torch down roof.

  22. Membrane torch is the best! More warranty, fast, and clean work procees, if the roof have more cracks in the future, the membrane torch not crack, and is not expensive is like $230m2, labor anf materials.

  24. That's a pretty extreme case I think. That doesn't change the fact overall death rates are not that high. Also doesn't change the fact almost all the young and healthy survive. This is mainly a killer of older people. Yes, your source cites complications in a few children that might be due to the virus. They haven't confirmed that yet according to your source. I wonder how many will die from this? https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/coronavirus/coronavirus-could-leave-up-to-10-million-more-in-poverty/ We are in a Catch 22 situation. The U.N. among others is saying that hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, will die from the poverty caused by the government reaction to this situation. Here in Mexico, how many of those ten million will die from poverty? Poverty BTW is more likely to kill the young, the future, versus this disease which mainly kills the old, the past. What is the better outcome?

  25. Last Wed. at Ajijic tianguis there was a mask seller. There wasn't much foot traffic at the tianguis and this seller's table was at the bottom of market, which now is just below Guadalupe Victoria. In Ajijic, I see signs outside residences advertising masks. There is one on Independencia just west of Cinco de Mayo, aka Juarez. There is another one on Ocampo near Cinco de Mayo also. The signs come and go. If you are unable to find one, please PM and I will give you a new-in-bag washable one. I am in Centro Ajijic.

  26. I assume you are repairing a flat roof. I put a membrane roof on one store I had. It was installed using a torch to seal the edges. One advantage is it is easily repaired. However if it was me, I would contact 3 different contractors and see how they say, they would fix it. Most of the measures you are receiving are temporary measures and will have to be redone in a few years. Sealer to me is not a viable option. A membrane roof with a slurry coat might be your best answer.

  27. I've seen varying degrees of compliance with the regs around town and in grocery stores. Sometimes better, sometimes not, I guess it depends on who is the boss at the moment. They should be complying with ALL the regs ALL the time. As various locations around the world start to open their businesses again, even countries that had an excellent track record of dealing with CV so far, people start slacking off and in most cases I've read about - when they open prematurely, which it is everywhere, there has been an immediate rise in cases and deaths of CV. This CV issue is not going to go away any time soon. People need to get used it and realize that they are risking lives by slacking off the compliance. They can reopen businesses but few people will show up for business when it's so obvious that they are not yet ready. We have to have much more testing - like they have every day in the WH - where recent cases have been found. Of course, the rest of the richest country in the world can't manage to do that. So, cuidanse muy bien!

  28. Our method, which worked perfectly: Sweep and clean the roof thouroughly. Locate all cracks, and caulk them with latex caulk, forcing it into cracks with a putty knife. 2nd day: Paint cracks with impermialazante and apply membrana, with another coat. 3rd day: Apply a full coat of impermialazante. Allow to dry according to instructions, then apply a second undiluted coat. Since cracks tend to be chronic and tend to move slightly, the flexible caulk is important in this preparation, as is the use of the fiberglass mat as a membrane.

  29. Sweden may not be the best example of a successful recovery. Swedes don't tend to live close together and have an excellent health care system. They also have much higher numbers for COVID-19 cases and deaths than their Scandinavian neighbors. Their deaths per million rate ranks in the top 10 in the world. And their economic recovery rate is about the same as other EU countries.

  32. Masonary roof cracks - depending on how deep the crack is it may require removing the top slurry coat and clay square tiles to see if the crack goes deeper into the actual roof structure. Membrane is generally used in a traffic area (flat roof) or a low spot. If your membrane is tearing and your roof has cracks then I would be checking the foundation as your house is shifting and maybe hidden structural damage. Impermeabilizante is available from Fester, Casther, Comex and likely other brands, comes in differing 'year' guarantees - 3, 5, 7, etc; in white or red; first coat is thinned 1-1 with water, when it dries, an additional two coats of full strength with appropriate drying time in between; the pails have instructions; Of course you get what you pay for - buy 5 yr and you are likely good for 3 years, etc.

  34. You don't know that. The lock down has nothing to do with how individuals react to the disease. It is well known by now that with very few exceptions the young and healthy have little to fear from it.

  37. It almost sounds like you're saying people stay here because they have to, rather than want to. Not so in this family's case: We moved to Mexico sixteen years ago and have been back to the U.S. once, for four days, for a family funeral. We were happy to get back "home"....which is right here. It's better on so many levels, from medical care to the general attitude of those who live here.

  40. Beware of fake tourist visa renewals, you can only get a new tourist visa at an immigration office after turning in paperwork (and waiting 2-4 hours). Many report "friends" getting them for a fee of thousands of pesos, don't risk it with fake documents. Current program ended today for re-issuance of tourist visas but we hope to see it return shortly. Here is a redacted image of the real deal we got for a client today.

  41. Today we learned that Don Pedro, the proprietor of Taqueria Don Pedro in Jocotopec and the gentle, personable man who collected trash for many of us in San Juan Cosala, passed away on Sunday as the result of a fall he experienced several days earlier. I'm certain that his wife Noelia and his children could use support right now, even if we can't give them a real hug.

  43. Yes EZ, but did it just delay the inevitable? Come May 17 it is still here. Come June 1 it is still here. Come next Fall it is still here. How long do you think people can be locked up and not allowed to work? How many of the ten million being forced into poverty in Mexico will die? Is protecting the few at the expense of the many a viable long term strategy? Good piece on Mexico's vulnerability to this disease and why here. https://www.vallartadaily.com/coronavirus-in-mexico-made-worse-by-trio-of-health-risk-factors/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+VallartaDaily+(Headline+News+from+Puerto+Vallarta)
