  1. Both Amazon and eBay banned the sale of N95 masks on their sites so that these masks could only be sold to hospitals, etc. Just because MercadoLibre sells them doesn't mean they should. As long as there are still newstories here in Mexico that there are N95 mask shortages in hospitals and for medical front line personnel, I think sales to the general public should be halted as they are/were in US (to my knowledge Amazon and eBay have not resumed sales of N95 to the general public). Those of you who had them long before this pandemic, good for you. It wasn't my intention to try to shame anyone...just want medical personnel to have first dibs on PPE's. The stories and demonstrations by Mexican health workers should be alarming to all of us. I don't doubt that distribution within IMSS is also a problem. And yes, I am and have been donating to the local food banks and local charities. Hope everyone is, there is a lot of need here and it's only going to get worse.

  2. No, What are YOU doing here. On these forums all you are able to express is hatred and half baked, redneck political theories. Now many people see Canadian Liberal and New Democratic Parties ( provincial) as socialist. And here in Mexico, where YOU have chosen to live, many people consider AMLO to be a socialist, and that he is driving the country in that direction, with nothing to stop him. So why are YOU living in a socialist country?

  3. The OP was trying to fix a malfunctioning chip card.....not sanitizing, so no need for bleach. Rubbing alcohol is recommended for cleaning a dirty chip. Worked on one of our malfunctioning chip cards. Though I have also read this:

  4. He probably had them like I did. I have had N95 masks and I even have a gas mask type mask with replaceable cartridges. Why? To spray chemicals or strong detergents and such. I also bought a large quantity of vitamin C. Do you want to take that away from me because I was prepared 🙂 All the things I have mentioned are available to buy. If you want Vitamin C the Christina drug store has a large supply of Bayer fizzie type Vitamin C in 1 gram with zinc and 2 gram just vitamin C. Liquid or IV vitamin C is quite a bit better than the pills. N95 masks can be purchased online. Since you are telling people what to do be sure you give to local food banks. Well I think that covers that.

  5. I am sorry, maybe the universal income thing is a distraction. The point I am truly trying.to make is all over the world the families and individuals, living out their quarantine, then discovering the air is clean again, birds, fish and critters are coming back again, etc. They then decide they prefer this type of life, and ponder and scheme to make it happen. Of course for others the kids are driving them up.the.wall, or they crave social ( or sexual) discourse and can't wait to get back to work, even if it involves a daily stinking commute.

  6. This does not change my statement. There are thousands of N95 masks available. I have 2 family members who are doctors in GDL They have plenty of N95 masks. I bought some online last week. Are you really suggesting that by the OP buying an N95 mask that an IMSS doctor did not get one?? The problem is the Federal government.... Not the supply of N95 masks available. There isn't cancer medicine for children in some IMSS hospitals. The medicine is available in pharmacies. Ask AMLO why there are no supplies in the hospitals. Don't blame the OP There are even N95 masks available for your dog with overnight delivery. Now if you wish to buy a few hundred masks to donate to an IMSS hospital I will give you a link and you can have them by Friday. P.S. I read Mexican newspapers Much more up to date then foreign newspapers about Mexico

  7. https://www.belfercenter.org/publication/coronavirus-strategic-challenge-has-washington-misdiagnosed-problem This is a pro and con discussion, I found it to be informative. Please read before you comment, it is not that long. It seems very well documented and balanced to me. The discussion seems germane to Mexico with the caveat, as the government here has pointed out, the health of the younger population is a factor in the higher death rate, notably due to such common problems here as obesity and diabetes among younger people.

  8. You are missing a lot of photos, news stories, and videos. Have you seen about the anti-closure demonstrations? One (at least) blocked ambulances. There is a photo of a nurse staring down a big dude leaning close and trying to intimidate her, and the video of a line of nurses blocking a line of protesters in vehicles. The first truck in line has a woman hanging out the window screaming at them.

  9. I'm probably making a big mistake but I'm going to put my 2 cents in here. Something no one ever brings up is "too many people". The world is overpopulated and that is the biggest driver of most of our problems. You name the problem and overpopulation is usually the reason. Now, hit me with the "who decides attack".

  10. Same here. She wanted to work; she said she was getting bored being at home all day. She lives near me so she does not need to take the bus. If your maid has been riding the bus but you mutually agree for her to work, you should pick her up and drive her home. Riding the bus is dangerous at this point.

  11. You didn't know that. I don' t how you can poke your head out the door, save alone your comments on this forum. Social Security and Medicare are paid by payroll taxes. While you are working they deduct them. When you stop working the people still working pay payroll taxes and fund the system. They hope that when they retire, there will be enough younger people paying in to pay them. I suggest you move into your Reagan era silent.majority.mode, with an emphasis on SILENT.

  12. I have seen much discussion on Facebook about this issue. The majority of people are paying their maids full salary to stay at home. I saw one lady say she never realized how much work her maid actually did and gave her a raise.

  13. The Belfer Center is a rightist outfit that has been criticized often for conflict of interest in its relations with other groups, due to its directors. That aside, it is well written, but it fails to impress me because it starts by basically saying that just because experts agree, we should always question them regardless of their veracity. (edited by mod to remove yet another "blatant" politicizing of a topic. Warning sent.)

  14. It's amazing to me how quickly the planet is seeming to recover from a lack of human activity. Horribly smoggy cities now have clear skies, the Venice canal is clean and clear, blue efflorescence has appeared in the ocean near shore in Acapulco for the first time in 60 years. It's a huge wake-up call as to what human activity results in and how quickly it appears to recover.

  15. One, it will have no effect. It is too long, for one thing. No one reads past the first two lines anymore. Especially in this kind of situation. Two, Pedro was absolutely correct in his statement, but you have turned it into a personal affront instead of a complaint. So thanks to you, they won't pay any attention to it anyway, even if they read it all. Third, it was not your place to include his name in an action like that without his approval. You should have given that a bit more thought, I think.

  16. It's up to the individual to make the choices about their keyboard comfort and their operating system comfort. imho, computers are sufficiently complicated without throwing in a different language and different keyboard into the mix. I have used an English extra keyboard with a usb connection on an ENGLISH laptop where the keyboard failed. That didn't require jumping through any extra steps. You need Mike the ComputerGuy to tell you what is possible to achieve in your personal situation.

  18. Dear Amigos, I have read the comments since I stopped actively being a part of what started out as a discussion of Coronavirus, COVID-19, SARS and relevant information. I would like to express congratulations to MAINECOONS for remaining steadily non-dogmatic and civil. There are several others as well, and I am sure that MAINECOONS could list them faster than me, from memory. As for the way this topic changed, I guess it was inevitable since many people obviously just wanted a place to vent and show the world on this web-board who they really were. ---------------------SO.................Way to go, MAINECOONS. and the rest who resisted the tidal wave of extraneous jibberjabber and ad hominem insults. If I ever meet any of the constructive folks after this virus passes, I would like that. I know I said I was done with this topic after 2 days of comments, but the urge to say thanks to some of you was too much for me, and likewise the desire to give others a "Time Out" was also a motivating factor. Keep it civil and intelligent, always. Adios

  21. The only official english information for the Chapala municipality is on the Facebook page "Chapala EXPAT Liaison". Messages from the govenor are intended for the large population centers and allow interpretation by the local mayors. Our Governor, Enrique Alfaro is acting very responsibly for the protection of the people of Jalisco. Likewise, our Mayor Moises Anaya, is acting very responsibly and using his leeway for the protection of his population. He is modifying state directives based on what he sees locally. The official expat Facebook page summarizes today's rules for Chapala.

  25. I'll ask you to document your first statement with a CREDIBLE citation. If it is well written why the ad hom? Your second statement is mischaracterizing the piece, they are showing you the experts don't agree and yes it is right to question. There most definitely are two sides to this issue. If in fact there is a far larger level of CV infection without overt symptoms in the population that has great impact on both the fatality percentages and the most effective strategies going forward. We shouldn't continue to lock up the young if in fact their chance of dying from this is minimal and in fact it is being mostly spread by the asymptomatic. Look at how wildly the models postulated by the experts have been changing. The experts in this case neither agree nor seem to be doing very well with their predictions. We, the public, are paying a huge price for these policies and it is our right to question them. https://theconversation.com/coronavirus-why-experts-disagree-so-strongly-over-how-to-tackle-the-disease-135825

  27. People keep saying you can buy masks online, so I went onto Amazon.com.mx to check. There are NO N95 masks for sale. If you read the reviews for the small variety of masks, you soon discover that they are all crap. Usually too small, or the elastic breaks, or you don't get what you ordered. Any masks that looked like they might be worthwhile had no reviews, and there is no point risking ordering those. Mercadolibre does have them, and some of the reviews are good, but as with Amazon, many have no reviews, and that is dangerous. There are a couple of guys with a table beside Tony's who are selling masks, gloves, and antibac gel and soap. Their thin masks (at 5p) are pretty poor, although they are enough. Their N95s (the type with a metal band, but no valve) are $125p each, which is ludicrous. I own one that I got for spraying trees at a farmacia for 15p before this all started. their gel is also way overpriced at $125p. Supply and demand.

  29. Several years ago, when we were part of a regular Sunday morning breakfast group of friends, we would eat breakfast there. It was consistently good and the dining room is pleasant and quiet. Not so with the Chinese offerings which puzzles us. It was terrible. Unfortunately threads pointing this out have been posted here periodically for years with no discernible effect. It certainly would be great to have a local Chinese place that was at least competent and I'd be willing to bet it would be popular. Doesn't look like it is going to happen, though. Dan

  30. Maybe those doing there so called studies should expand to a global basi s, and maybe get a big surprise. Even China, a Communist country the whole world wants to trade with, has had to to reduc e their GDP from 6% to 3% with these tough times. The U.S.A. has not.broken 2% for quite some time, and th e economic reports for 2020 are likely to.be brutal. What about the tens of thousand of workers about to be laid off and unempl oyeable by AI and factory robots. Too.bad, So.Sad, Move Along, Life Sucks?

  32. I am not going to debate universal income with you. There are a lot of sources on this subject. As far as I understand, the proposals do not do away with income tax. So if you live on a goverment pension the supplement might be taxed. If you just live on the supplement, likely with a group of others, then you are unlikely to.be taxed at all. It.is the environmental initiatives that you and I should be worried about. If you drive a gasol ine or diesel truck, you would have to pay the same annual rate as a rich man driving his Ferrari. Using gasoline for cheap transportation is one the things killing this world.

  33. You know, Pedro and I have locked horns many times over the years. But he is only providing his name because of the constant belittling by "certain" members of this Board who regularly complain that posters hide behind their avatar names. I have to applaud him for that. I cannot applaud him, however, for selecting that gross happyjillin username as his comeback.

  35. I can offer some help, but I have to tell you it is not possible to change a Spanish keyboard to English. Not physically. You can tell Windows to think the keyboard is in English, but you will have to deal with learning where certain keys are actually located, such as the plus and minus, the dash and underscore, the question mark and exclamation point, and most likely the @ symbol. Alternatively, you can plug in a USb-enabled standalone English keyboard, if you can find one here (sometimes yes, sometimes no), but then of course that changes the whole reason for having a laptop. Now, a question: is Windows itself in English or Spanish? Cause that's a whole different story. Contact me at 765-4156 if you would like more information.

  38. This is very difficult subject to address....firstly we all have different opinions on how a certain restaurant dish should taste ,but as in the Min Wha’s case we tend to agree most of their food needs help. In his well known books .The making of a Chef etc the author Rhulman attempts to explain the difficulties of replicating restaurant dishes with any degree of consistency . The main problem is exposure.....the chef / cook has to know what the dish should taste like to begin with , either though training or having eaten it many times at a wide variety of restaurants. The best ethnic restaurants are usually operated by persons of that particular ethnicity or people who have spent extensive time in that country , constantly being exposed to the flavor profiles. Oriental food is complex ...sweet ,sour , salty , hot and spicy. ....that’s why it is so popular and difficult to make with any degree of authenticity. I have a repertoire of about a dozen oriental dishes I make quite often they’re not easy.. The poor cook/ chef at Min Wha has to produce over a hundred different dishes , that someone showed either him or a family member over a dozen years ago . Do I eat there ? ... yes I get take out occasionally ,when I’m feeling lazy during this confinement...which probably accounts for the length of this post .

  42. I still do not understand the part about people who do not use Facebook being annoyed by what is on FB. Small business people don’t have the skills to set up and keep a web page going. Neither do they have the money to pay someone to do it for them. I can not remember the last time I went to a web page. What businesses here are paying Facebook anything? They set up a page. People go to it. Their customers post links to it and share their posts with their Friends.

  44. Just wear a mask. Everybody wear a mask. If you don't have one you can go online to the internet and they show you how to make one from household materials. I have been wearing one for four weeks now and you do get use to it. Better to get use to it now than when this thing hits if it has not hit already. Only Brazil has a lower testing rate than Mexico. Act like everybody you meet has it. We just don't know until it is too late with the four day period when you can spread it with no sign of the virus.

Or do you submit the proof to the FBU in Guadalajara. If to GDL did you receive an email stating all was ok and you benefits would continue uninterrupted? When do you see you deposits? For example Non US citizen living in Mexico receiving spousal benefits: Nov -2019 deposit on Oct 31 Dec-2019 deposit on Dec 2 Jan 2020 deposit on Jan 2 Feb 2020 deposit on Jan 31 March and April on the 2nd of both months.
