  2. listen guys.... I was 33 when I arrived here in Mexico. I am almost 56 now and as a very young expat, unfortunately I have had to say goodbye to a lot of older Canadian and US friends ( unusual to lose that many friends when you are in your thirties and forties ) and every time it hurt and I never got used to it !! Also, a lot of those people left their pets, which didnt always have the best outcome ! The Mex healthcare system ( like others ) will not be able to cope with this tsunami. Authorities mostly ignore the seriousness and hardly do any testing About myself, yes, I am strong enough to admit that I am scared....but more so ( although at minor risk, I may hope ) to maybe have to leave behind my 15 year old doggie. So, forgive me that I laugh a bit less, when reading the same style and repeated jokes...over and over again. I sincerely wish the best to all of you ( and to myself ! ). No hard feelings. We simply dont have the same sense of humour and a different background Rony

  3. I know that you are a moderator here, and have some power, but please rethink your continuous sarcasm and macho behaviour. It is utterly childish. As a European, I follow VERY closely the unfolding drama in Italy ( where I have friends/direct witnesses in Florence ) and other European countries. Panic no,.... but the non stop jokes about this ...are not even funny anymore and out of place. One bad joke yes, but ... If you still believe that this is not serious and will not hit people here ( especially the poor, who will not have access to good or any healthcare ), you will be in for a big surprise soon. Rony

  4. A version of this warning was posted on TOB a day or two ago and since then deemed most likely to be BS. There are tests that show CV can live for up to 3 days on surfaces, not 12 hours. Most viruses and bacteria thrive in warm conditions, that's why hospitals and medical facilities are kept so cold. Viruses spread in winter because everyone is inside together. When it gets warm people spend time outdoors, not so close, and more importantly, in the sun. UV kills viruses. The virus thrives in the human body which has a temperature of close to 100. To think an ambient temp of 85 will kill it makes little sense.

  6. Mainecoons, you are extremely deluded if you think the US response has been "rapid". A couple weeks ago the POS was saying it was all an overblown hoax created by the Dems to derail the election. Today, in his meeting with US governors, he told them if they needed medical supplies, they should find them themselves. And the madness that is taking place at US airports, where thousands of US citizens were forced to wait for hours, in packed conditions, with zero protection as far as spreading diease, was insane and irresponsible and probably substantially upped the number of cases that will surface. It's too late now for US entry travel bans- that should have been done not only by the US, but worldwide, weeks ago. It's now in the US, there have been deaths, and it's the US residents who are spreading it around, some of them still under the impression that it's some "liberal media hype".

  10. I agree. But let us also keep some balance here. Too much gets really boring and takes away the opportunity for others to discuss this a little more seriously. Does every serious comment have to be downplayed... I doubt that a lot of Italian families are joking right now. We didnt always joke this much about other ugly world events that hit other people in the world, did we... Not everybody has to become a comedian about this Rony

  14. In the past couple of weeks a number of folks on this forum have pooh-poohed the pandemic and said it is "overblown" and not as bad as people described as "alarmists" have said. Here is a story that ran today in the Huffington Post. Doctors in Italy, the country with the second worst outbreak in the world, are sending a warning to the rest of the world. Their country is shut down and they just had the highest single day of deaths in the crisis, higher than China at its peak. Their message is that it is only a matter of time before other countries get hit like Italy unless they take drastic steps now. They estimate that the US is probably 13-16 days behind Italy. Mexico is probably a bit further out than that, but we really don't know because the testing here has been pitifully small in numbers and little action has been taken to restrict large events and encourage social distancing. The Italian doctors' description of what is happening there is chilling. Italy Has Been Trying To Send Us A Warning. Will We Listen? The country with the world's second-worst COVID-19 outbreak is imploring the United States and the rest of the world not to make the same mistakes. Here is the story.

  15. It doesn't. The drinking water myth was one of the first to be debunked. Won't hurt to stay hydrated, though. But it's nonsense that the water moves it to stomach and stomach acid magically kills it. https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/12/21177262/coronavirus-tip-fake-list-stanford-hoax-covid-19

  16. Good for them! Definitely the most responsible step to take. I am scheduled to go up north to see my 104 year old mom in May for Mothers Day week. If things keep getting worse--and there seems little reason to believe they won't--I will need to cancel the trip, because of the danger of picking up the virus while traveling on two flights and passing through three airports to get there. I'm not as much worried about getting sick myself as passing it on to her and her fellow residents in the facility where she lives. I talked to her about it yesterday and she understands, although she is disappointed she will not see me as planned. Hopefully, the pandemic will be over by mid-summer and I can go then, but I'm taking no chances.

  19. This information comes from doctors currently on the front line fighting the virus who can help a large number of people. "We don't stop the virus with panic, but with intelligence. Here is new information from a researcher from Shenzhen transferred to Wuhan to work with the Coronavirus epidemic task force. The following information is clear, simple and accessible to everyone, describing exactly what the virus is, how it is spread from person to person and how it can be neutralized in everyday life. Coronavirus infection does not present itself as the usual cold, with a runny nose or a cough with cathars and sputum, but on the contrary with a dry cough. This is the first sign to identify properly. Important to know: the virus does not resist heat and it dies if it is exposed to temperatures of 26-27 ° and above. It is therefore very important to consume during the day all possible hot drinks such as tea, herbal tea, broth, soups, or simply hot water. The hot liquid neutralizes the virus and it is not difficult to absorb them. Important: Especially avoid drinking iced water or sucking on ice or snow for those who are in the mountains, especially children. For those who can, it is important to expose yourself as much as possible to the sun in accordance with your current climatic conditions. Number 1. The Coronavirus is quite large, it has a diameter of about 400 to 500 nm. This means that any type of mask can stop it. In day to day life, therefore, it is not necessary to have special masks. The situation is different if you are a doctor or medical staff and you have to be exposed to strong discharges of the virus and in this case it is essential to use special masks. If someone who has already been infected sneezes in front of you, and they are 3 m away, it will cause the virus to fall to the ground and therefore prevent it from reaching you. This is the reason why a safe distance is important between people. Number 2. When the virus is found on metallic surfaces, it survives for about 12 hours! It is therefore extremely important when you touch metal surfaces such as doorknobs, doors, household appliances, grab handles on trams, etc. wash your hands well and disinfect yourself carefully. Number 3: the virus can live hidden in clothes and on fabrics for around 6 to 12 hours. Normal detergents can destroy it. For clothes that cannot be washed every day, if you can expose them to the sun or a source of great heat which will kill the virus. How the virus manifests: 1. The virus first settles in the throat, causing inflammation and a feeling of a dry throat: this symptom can last 3 to 4 days. 2. The virus travels using the moisture that is present in the airways, it travels down the windpipe and settles in the lungs causing polmonitis. This passage lasted approximately 5 to 6 days. 3. Polmonitis manifests with high fever and difficulty breathing, and it looks nothing like an ordinary cold. You may even feel like you are drowning due to difficulty breathing. In this case, it is essential to immediately call an emergency care service. How to avoid the virus: 1. The transmission of the virus occurs in the majority of the cases by direct contact, by touching fabrics or materials on which the virus is present: to wash the hands frequently is absolutely essential. The virus survives on your hands for about 10 minutes, but during these 10 minutes a lot can happen: rub your eyes or scratch your nose for example and allow the virus to enter your throat! So, for your well-being and that of others, wash your hands as often as possible and disinfect them! 2. you can gargle with a disinfectant solution that eliminates or reduces the quota of the virus that might have entered your throat. By doing this you will eliminate the virus before it enters the windpipe and then into your lungs. 3. disinfect your computer keyboard and mouse, not to mention your cell phone and desk phone. We all need to pay close attention and take care of ourselves for our well-being and that of others. " Source: Association for the fight against thrombosis and cardiovascular diseases. 23. Well, the majority of Canadian travelers aren't out of the country for more than the required amount of months. Most are just on vacation. I think it has more to do with Canada protecting its citizens and not wanting them to get stuck in a foreign country, panicking and demanding that the govt, get them out, if the borders are closed.

  24. " It is hot and this bug doesn't like heat. " Oh my. Where do you get THAT misinformation Maincoons? Please research. Stop spreading falsehoods and debunked myths. These can lull us into a false...and risky...sense of complacency. Trump also believes that "The heat, generally speaking, kills this kind of virus.” So you share your misinformed opinion with other "stable genius" company. 😄 Research is changing DAILY as scientists learn more about the reality and trajectory of this virus. Start your current research right here perhaps, where we read that "The impact of the virus is as serious in hot-humid weather conditions of Singapore as in the colder environment of European countries." https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/non-veg-food-hot-weather-aiims-director-bursts-biggest-myths-about-coronavirus/articleshow/74634404.cms and this: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/why-experts-doubt-warm-weather-will-slow-coronavirus-spread.html and this https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51735367 Stay informed. 27. Eric- To me, it wasn't that no one wanted to discuss the topic, of course everyone is paying attention and has concern. It's that every time you had a new thought about it, which seemed to be about every day or more, you started a new topic thread. Also you tend to use click-bait titles for your posts, rather than just directly state the topic, which is irritating. And also the fact that you seemed to think that no one would make themselves aware of anything regarding the virus if you didn't post here and tell them.

  28. Not necessarily true. Health officials have been warning about wearing masks because unless one is trained, like medical personnel are, as to how to wear and remove it properly, it can do more harm than good. People tend to fiddle around with masks. I saw a woman wearing one yesterday who was constantly grabbing it by the top, right by her nose, with thumb inside the mask and index finger outside, to keep pulling it up. Unless her hands were totally sterile, she just helped to introduce whatever she might have had on her hands to the inside of her mask.

  29. Well if you read up on Italy, a few interesting things emerge. First the country has the oldest population in Europe and that population is denser around Milan. Secondly it now appears the medical system there did not notice an upsurge of pneumonia as corona virus until it had spread a great deal. So they were very late in taking the needed steps to bring it under control. China was a bit tardy as well but when they acted the action of isolating cases and limiting social interaction was very thorough. Finally, the socialized medicine system in Italy was shown to be woefully inadequate for the number of cases and a number of older patients have not received any treatment at all. https://www.businessinsider.com/prioritizing-covid-19-patients-based-age-likely-wont-fly-us-2020-3 I'm always skeptical of anything I see in that source for the reason they don't seem to research things well and have serious bias issues. For example I'll wager that piece mentioned none of the above even though all of this has been discussed in other sources. It is a mistake to equate Italy to the U.S. where the response has been far more rapid, starting with the early travel ban imposed on travel from China. Other countries are taking drastic steps which is why I think in 2-3 weeks we will see a pattern more like China's and less like Italy's. Interesting the two cases from Guadalajara are both returning Europe travelers.

Simply citing Singapore ignores the fact it is densely packed and very difficult to isolate oneself from the masses of people. It is probably better proof that cities are not a good place to be with this bug. https://www.accuweather.com/en/health-wellness/higher-temperatures-affect-survival-of-new-coronavirus-pathologist-says/700800 https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3074131/coronavirus-highly-sensitive-high-temperatures-dont-bank-summer We are coming on the season here where it is hotter, drier and sunnier every day. 46. I would fly up to Seattle 3 times per year and I remember that when we had that crisis around 2009 or so that when I went to the Guadalajara Airport, there were people there wearing face masks for protection, and forcing everyone to have their temperature taken. They had some type of thermometer that they placed against your forehead and if your temperature was to high you were sent or taken somewhere. I don't know where, because I was OK and was more worried about catching my flight. I am over reacting to this outbreak and have purchased a large can of Corona Beer and then when going a small event I will wear my face mask, really a dusk mask, and sit down at the table and tell them I have Corona. And then after watching how they react, I say I have proof and I put the can of Corona Beer on the table. Some folks got really upset with me, others laughed I think maybe I should stop, because some were really upset about what I had done.
