  2. Buy a liter of Mezcal. Place a lid from a mayonnaise jar on the floor and fill with the Mezcal. Drink the remainder of the Mezcal. The gnats will drink the Mezcal and then fall into the lid and drown. In the morning the gnats will either be gone or you will not care.

  4. Gringal, the violence in SMA and the entire state of Guanajuato has nothing to do with home invasions and street crime. And San Miguel de Allende is not a Pueblo Mágico; that title was taken away from the city in 2008.

  7. We just moved from Ajijic to San Antonio after prices in Ajijic drove us out. San Antonio is going up very quickly. Best to find a peso house and a landlord who wants you for a long time. Word of mouth is best to find a deal. Certain families here own a lot of rentals and tend to have better prices and value long term tennants who take care of the property well.. We were able to get a large unfurnished, 3 bedroom, four bath newer house with walls, electric fence and 1/4 acre of land for 20K pesos per month. We find the people here to be very friendly but speaking at least spanglish is needed to mix with the population. I will admit to feeling like we are doing to San Antonio what we did to Ajijic years ago but what can I do??

  8. I'm suspecting they have diverted resources to adding "new signups" in new places. After all, cash flow is crucial for any business. Almost sounds like the Bernie Madoff business model.

  11. I was in television and production for years. There is a certain skillset required to keep viewers interested. Unfortunately, cheap cameras and easy Internet access has not promoted any sense of awareness amongst vloggers like this. Knowing you can say and do anything you want, for as long as you want, gets people babbling. Remember the good old days, when most people were too shy to even leave a decent message on a phone answering machine? I have to set my own phone to stop recording after 2 minutes, so I don't have to spend my entire afternoon listening to someone who has clearly forgotten that I am not on the other end.

  12. Lori and Jerry Brown are very nice folks, but $750 isn't cheap! The last place we rented in Ajijic was about $250 USD for a 3BR/1BA house with a yard and parking. Unfortunately the owners will be renovating it and not renting it again--sob.... the best deals are with local mexican landlords, not rental agencies, but that takes some sleuthing.

  13. " Question: How safe is it these days? I'm not a Fraidy Cat but I'm not stupid either. Have any of you actually seen or experienced negative situations in any of these places? Gracias! " That was the OP's question. We drifted afar, as usual and normal. My point some posts ago was that, even if you're not hearing about it officially, that does not mean a city is crime-free, and people should be alert in their travels. That's all, folks.

  15. Go to the Lake Chapala Society https://lakechapalasociety.com/public/ or to one of the coffee shops at the Ajijic Plaza - make some friends. There is a weekly hiking group (Ajijic Hiking Group on FB) and a birding group You could also check out Ajijic News, they have a calendar of events http://www.ajijicnews.com/ So what type of job do you have that brings you to our area for "several days to a week"?

  16. Sourdough takes from 12-24 hours to be ready. So they don't start the process in the morning. It was stated they start work at 4am...Why is everyone thinking it takes 5 hours to bake bread and bagels? I can mix, have the dough rise, pound down , rise again & bake in less than 2 hours. My point was that if a bakery opens at 7am they should have product ready at 7am. Customers who arrive 45 minutes after opening aren't there to observe the process, they are there to buy, and for sure not to be told to return in a couple of hours. Again I suggest to call ahead if you are going early.

  18. Their ad said "soups and salads" and listed one of each, just like their main meal listing said three items. It would have been better as "choice of soup or salad". On the other hand, arugula (the salad choice) is something I just don't care for... usually too old and bitter. You are much easier on restaurants than I would be. I'm looking at your notes: - small salad; poor choice of lettuce; tough pork tenderloin; dry carrots; terrible apple pie (almost impossible to get decent apples here anyway); inordinate amount of time. How many ticks in the "against" column do I need? Fewer than yours. These items are all key parts of a meal. I think you are being more than fair.

  21. Google drain flies, they like to hang out in bathrooms. I have them too, now that I recall. They are really small and blackish looking. According to wikipedia there are many many varieties, some looking almost moth like. The ones I have are very small, gnat size.

  22. Slainte, when violence dramatically increased early this year in San Miguel de Allende, a regidor in SMA's city government publicly asked residents (a) not to talk about it and (b) to act as if cártel violence was not happening---so that tourism would not decrease. In this particular instance, it's not an urban legend or myth. This is just one of many news reports about it, in which the mayor of SMA finally recognizes this currently year-long terrible violence: https://www.milenio.com/policia/san-miguel-allende-alcalde-reconoce-inseguridad-municipio

  26. Hi ezpz...although I rarely go to San Miguel de Allende, it has been my lot to have gone there three times in the last six months. People--both Mexican and foreign friends--are talking non-stop about the ongoing violence in that city, in the city of Guanajuato, in Celaya, and in the rest of the state. The violence isn't about or between small-time retail drug sellers on the street. It's about three different cárteles fighting for derecho de piso (control of those cities and of the state), and has been escalating since January 2019. It's commonly reported in the press that the two primary cárteles are Jalisco Nueva Generación and Santa Rosa de Lima. The extortion of businesses has also gone through the roof, with the cártel Santa Rosa de Lima demanding as much as 30,000 pesos from tortillerías to continue doing business. In June of 2019, I happened to be in San Miguel when two separate assassinations took place: one across the street from where friends lived (they have since moved to Morelia, due to the insecurity in SMA), and one on a street near the Centro Histórico, where, as I was being taken through town to the SMA bus station, I actually witnessed SEMEFO (the coroner's department) picking up the body. Just two weeks ago, I was on the Primera Plus bus from Morelia to SMA. As we were approaching Celaya, the bus made a U-turn on the highway and then a long detour around the city. I was sitting in the seat behind the driver; he kept his window open and shouted (in Spanish) at all cars going the opposite direction, "Don't go that way! There's big trouble there! Follow me, I know the safe route to get around it!" Due to this long detour, we arrived approximately 1.5 hours late into San Miguel. That evening, I learned when I talked with Mexican friends that there had been an enfrentamiento (gun battle between warring factions of the cárteles) on the bus route. This situation is not to be taken lightly. Driving on a toll road doesn't mean you can blithely assume that you are safe. I won't tell you that should change your plans, but it's imperative that you know what's actually going on in the entire state of Guanajuato. You speak Spanish, ezpz; do you also read it? Google cárteles derecho de piso guanajuato for information in the news media. Here's a good place to start: https://www.am.com.mx/guanajuato/noticias/Guanajuato-con-mas-asesinatos-en-el-pais-van-2-mil-560-muertos-en-2019-20191020-0028.html

  27. Buying is a payment at current exchange rates. Dollars or pesos makes no difference. Building is at future exchange rates during the construction process because the majority of construction lakeside is cost + a set percentage paid weekly or monthly. If the peso gets stronger you will pay more..If the peso gets weaker you will pay less. It is a gamble not a certainty. If your architect gives you a set price it is padded to protect them from cost increases. But again dollars or pesos it is computed based on the exchange rate at the time you sign the contract.

  28. IMO if one takes the US State Department warnings as the gold standard of where to live in Mexico, one will never be able to settle down SOB. And if one doesn't want to live in Colima because of that, one must also not take up residence in Jalisco Lake Chapala and MANY other places either. Life is full of possibilities and probabilities. It's possible one might get killed or kidnapped in Colima by nefarious persons.. but the probability of said happening (unless one is indulging in acts that would draw one into that realm) is damn slim. NOTE: I offer absolutely zero data to back up these claims but..... I am not a fan of the State Department's carte blanche issuance of those warnings and surely not the using of them as a life changing decision mechanism! YMMV of course.

  30. If you're referring to me you should be getting an award of some sort for this post because I said her sign[which is barely visible from the right side of the road] ,i said it was a replica of a donut not a green tire. Chocolate it is. Unless you're colour blind chocolate is brown not green. If you're not referring to me,ignore my comment.

  33. Actually I am renting 6 brand new apartments, unfurnished but with built in kitchen and bedroom closets for less then US$ 200.00/month. I had to reduce the rent so that they were affordable to Mexicans as "gringos" that looked at them loved them but felt outside of their comfort zone in my neighborhood. Have lived in this part of Chapala for about 3 years and have never had a problem (mind you I do not walk the streets after dark).

  34. I don't think anyone thought it would be the "be all". What everyone wanted was decent Internet speed, and an end to the iron grip of callousness as displayed by TelMex for many years. And from what I can see, once iLox actually started installing, that woke TelMex up quite a bit. It also allowed other fibre outfits, like iFibra, to start coming in. Those people who now have iLox are experiencing, along with all the problems, much better speed than they could have hoped for before. TVRey, the parent company, is first and foremost a TV station infrastructure business. iLox is an offshoot, only a very few years old. So I'm curious to know which towns fall into the "reputation for service to non business customers is well known in towns they have served for a few years" comment, and how you know about them, when I and others certainly don't.
