  1. Slainte- there's also what I think of as a kind of reverse discrimination- where foreigners, thinking they are being sensitive and respectful, defend things like blasting techno music until 4 AM, saying things like "It's their country" and "It's Mexican culture". Those kinds of things aren't Mexican culture, and there are tons of Mexicans who hate it as much as most foreigners do. I've hung out with some educated chilangos and they listen to the same type of music I do, and certainly not at ear-splitting decibel levels. Unless one speaks Spanish, has actually studied Mexican culture, travelled in many parts of the country and had interaction with different classes and levels of education among Mexicans, I find it presumptuous to espouse that something is Mexican culture simply based on experience in the small area where a foreigner has settled. It's just as discriminatory towards Mexicans as a whole to insinuate that they all uncaringly disturb their neighbors as it is to portray them as scammers, terrible drivers or always late or no shows.

  2. Support has ended. Security updates will end then. Makes no difference to how you use your computer. It's heresy to say this, but none of the antivirus programs work anyway, so just learn to be careful. NOTE that security updates have nothing to do with your bank or making purchases online. That type of security is supplied by you, your bank, and your passwords. You can get any number of antivirus programs for free, if you feel you need them. The one thing we need to protect ourselves from is spyware: stuff that comes onto your computer when surfing the Web. And the only thing that comes even close to protecting you from that (albeit poorly) is the paid version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. And that is a yearly subscription. (The free version only works manually. It will not run in the background to alert you.) Antivirus programs cannot deal with spyware or prevent it. I have been turning off Windows 7 updates of all kinds for my customers for years, to help prevent unnecessary screwups. And there hasn't been a serious update for years anyway. Windows 7 works perfectly well the way it is. Your only potential problem is installing programs that have been updated to the point where they will no longer work on Windows 7, and those programs that are designed for much more powerful machines (they can be installed, but will be painfully slow in many cases).

  3. Not quite correct Pete. I speak American English with a Mexican accent, Mexican Spanish with an American Accent , and Irish with a Canadian accent. Ah hell, let´s just be honest……..I don´t speak very well…..period. I do try and speak for the Mexican perspective on this board but Mexicans like every other nationality have many different views on the same subject, so I can´t always be accurate or all inclusive. Four generations of blood family here does give me a look from several different views and age perspectives. as well as, business and educational experience of all the different family members and other close associates and friends. all Mexican, like my family. In my humble opinion, most Mexicans judge the person, and not the nationality of foreigners and they will pick and choose their favorites and their "not so fond of", just like we do among our own kind. That´s why I hate to see foreigners stereotype Mexicans in a solid mass, like how they drive, rip off "gringos", never show up on time, and a dozen other things that some foreigners think all Mexicans do the same way. It makes see a little "red" when someone starts a rant with the word "Mexicans", instead of "some people". some people"

  4. Most people know some of my past problems with the Ajijic Telmex office. Now, there seems to be a better way. This time both my landline and my internet went down for a total of five days. I called 1-800-123-2222 and got a folio number using my cell phone. They TEXTED me the folio number and said, in the text, in the future to text to *2222 if other problems occurred. Problem was fixed on Monday and I got a call from the tech to check that all was well within five minutes of restoration of service. Today, I got an e-mail asking me to fill in a short questionnaire about my experience. Well, I'm gobsmacked. Best service and response that I've had to a problem here in 8 years. In the comments section, I thanked them and told them that my other experiences with Telmex over the last 23 years have been positive and that ONLY the Telmex office in Ajijic has let me down on numerous occasions. Maybe they'll do something about that and maybe they won't. Whatever... now you know a better way to report a problem.

  5. I've been enjoying trout at Gosha's and Nueva Posada, both are excellent although different preparations (Gosha's is grilled, while Nueva Posada's is baked almondine). I asked the waiter at Gosha's where the trout came from; he said it came from Mazamitla. Sure enough there is a rainbow trout hatchery in Mazamitla! The second link below(in Spanish) indicates you can fish for trout at the hatchery. https://www.zonaturistica.com/en/things-to-do-and-places-to-visit/1306/farm-barranca-verde-hatchery-of-trouts-mazamitla.html http://www.mazamitla.travel/granja_piscicola.html This week when nosing around the freezer at SL, I saw some trout (trucha is the Spanish word). For 74 pesos, I figured what the heck and bought it. It is to my eye, identical to what is served at both eateries. The head is included with it, so you can be sure it's not a cat 😸 (that is a joke that has to do with buying rabbit at the Chapala Mercado). I thawed it then seasoned with s&p and a light schmear of olive oil. Grilled it in a pre-heated 375 degree gas grill (lid down) skin side down for 5 to 7 minutes; don't flip it, the delicate flesh will break. It was excellent (with a caper tartar sauce). At the restaurants this entire fillet is served as a meal; for a light lunch two of us shared the fillet with some veggies. Heartier appetites might not be fully satisfied with the fillet alone (lookin' at you CG ☺️); may want to add a starch to round out the meal.

  6. Hello all, Im doing some remodeling projects and am trying to find some tradesmen but either their numbers dont work, they dont call back or what to charge an arm and a leg or more, 1) Need a plumber to change a water pressure system tank, had a tank that was failing and guy said that a bigger tank would fit in the space, I told him it wouldn´t, I got home and I was right, it didn´t fit but he had already connected it all in a place that was out in the open in the way of things. Need to take out large tank to put 20 gallon tank in the space made for and then also clean the aljibe and tinaco. 2) Electrician as I have 3 meters which have no rhyme nor reason with specific connections or phases for the building and now have solar panels so need everything running to the 220 meter to leave the others with no connection to home and then have them removed and then get bidirectional meter for solar. I got one quote to change the wires around for over $8,000 pesos which I though was excessive. 3) Iron worker to fix a sagging fence and make some protective grates to cover the skylights on the roof for security.

  8. I haven't heard that declaration. But I think it depends upon the gated community. If the members are going to endlessly debate and make it an uphill battle, Ilox won't want to deal with it. Check out Las Quintas. They grabbed the bull by the horns. Craig Rule, the lead in that development, sat down with the Ilox engineers,, got the requirements, used his maintenance people to do all the infrastructure for a song...I think it ended up being something like 200-300 dlls per home. Now all 14 homes of them there have high speed fiber.. Done. By the way, do you know what that does to home values? Rental ease? Honestly Bedbug, I don't know what people are smoking to have to debate this. Even if you are in a modern development where Telmex tied up the ducts, it probably makes sense to tear up the streets and put in decent fiber. From a real estate value point of view. Just don't put the onus on Ilox...They'll come to the entrance of the community with the preparation, its up the community members to make the preparations. Tom

  10. A whole lot more evidence would have to be presented before this case could be judged. It could be anything from a pitiful situation to some sort of diabolical trolling.

  11. Our concept of living is based upon money and schedules. The Mexican concept is based upon the present moment, with family and friends being first, and trying not to ever disappoint by saying 'no'.

  12. It's a good example of the hysteria around this whole thing. It was great trolling IMO, really captured how stupid and hysterical some of the true believers have become. You do know that Swedish "scientist" was dead serious in suggesting we start eating people, no? When you start labeling understandably skeptical people as "deniers" and talking about "your camp" that is when this descends into nothing more than an emotion driven quasi religious movement. The name calling is always a sign the believers can't make their case logically and dispassionately. You know, like real scientists do. And you might want to consider just what that does to the credibility of the very real question of the who what and where of climate change. Just as the environmental movement has lost support because of this kind of extremism, now the very real need to understand and address climate is being made the fool of. Anyway, I suggest you keep working on your "science", unlike the environmental destruction you can see before your very eyes it is a great ways from being settled. And we are all still waiting for the true believers to explain to us how handicapping the world's cleanest nations in favor of the world's dirtiest is somehow going to solve this problem. I notice all the true believers stay far away from addressing that question. It is the elephant in the room of the climate change movement. Hint: A "treaty" that allowed the world's dirtiest to go right on rocking and rolling for another decade while saddling the world's cleanest with a bunch of economy wrecking taxes and regulations wasn't it. Try again and this time everyone participates from day one. You might be surprised to find how many of your so called deniers would support that.

  13. Yes, you will. And most people recommend Dra. Claudia Camacho who is currently on maternity leave. But, it will take you that long to get in to see her anyway. For the record, I have two friends close to Joco and they have both had cataract surgery with her. Excellent results and no problems. Dra. Claudia helped another friend who is a snowbird that had a bad cataract surgery with another opthamologist here. As for me, she is watching a small cataract in my right eye until it gets obnoxious enough to cause me a problem. In other words, she will try and avoid doing the surgery until necessary. How refreshing is that?

  14. Im happy to help. It is the appointment but also a thorough review of documents to make sure they are in the right format. Some consulates are more "make sense" and some people have been denied from the flexible ones for trying to save a few dollars on printing documents. Some cases are slam dunk, others appear to be but are not and others are crazy and confusing. We had 2 different sets of clients who previously lived in Costa Rica and qualified but were denied, I put them through a mini hell as I requested certain documents that were not easy to get and now happily they have their visas. The devil is in the details.

  16. The problem with your post, GaryM, is you have failed to use a sufficient number of exclamation points. Without the requisite overwrought sense of urgency, your plea for succor will likely fall on deaf ears. Not that it wouldn't anyway.
