  1. I'm sure I will get beat up over this entry, but my "advice" would be to hold off on the planned move -- if at all humanly possible -- until after your daughter graduates from high school. My "observation" is that Lakeside is not a place where teenagers are provided ample opportunities and peer role models to thrive. (Of course there will be exceptions.) Teen pregnancy and drug abuse are at alarmingly high levels here.

  4. You won't get beat up by me MexSeekin. A move at this stage of life for a 16 year old female could be disastrous in so many ways, especially with the language barrier. I had Spanish classes throughout grades 1-12 and two semesters in University and I still struggle to communicate, so please don't think two years will make it possible for your daughter to make friends. Don't be selfish. Put off your dreams until your daughter is finished with school and well on the way to achieving hers.

  5. As a dancer/choreographer who has danced and performed to many types of music, creations from various artists and choreographers, I have chosen to enjoy the art, joy and my personal passion for dance. It certainly isn't for me to decide for any other individual if they wish to dance to a particular song or artist performing the song/music. I can and will decide solely for myself and am responsible solely for my own actions. I liken it to one's beliefs in other social and political issues. If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one. If you don't believe in a same-gender lifestyle, don't have one, if you don't believe in drinking alcohol, don't drink and the list goes on. I think I've made the point. I appreciate everyone has opinions and beliefs and will act accordingly. It remains my intent to publicize events and classes that include dance, Theatre, Improv, etc. Should people wish to attend, support and enjoy is absolutely their decision. Should others prefer to avoid this type of activity, I encourage you to choose a different activity on a given day. Most of us are retired and enjoying our golden years. I encourage everyone to do what makes you happy. Cheers! Val Jones

  6. I will eat crow. I am wrong. Despite hearing "plazo" far more than "plaza" re the troubles in various parts of Mexico, I have consulted with my friend Malcolm Beith (author of The Last Narco) and he has corrected my error. RickS, he says it's plaza and he knows way more than I do. I apologize.

  8. Having lived here in 2012 when cartels were fighting each other for control in this area, I can tell you it did not involve young people throwing things at each other from opposite sides of the street.

  9. Per Insight Crime website . . . This takes us to the cartel dictionary. The ground won or lost is a “plaza” — a term nobody has been able to translate very well. It doesn’t mean a palm-lined village square. In underworld parlance in Mexico, a plaza is a geographical area of influence. Nor is it limited to border staging areas for drug smuggling. A plaza can be deep inside Mexico. It can be the size of an entire Mexican state, or a group of states — or just a city or county-sized area within a state — or only a section of a city. But the core meaning remains: a plaza is where you squeeze out profits. No other gang is supposed to move in (unless they pay “derecho de piso” — a user’s fee, or turf tax — also not translating very well).

  10. 16 years old lady will have a new set of friends in a foreign country which language she does not speak. Without knowing the reason for OP's decision to move at this point in their lives I think 16 is a worst age to move her . If she would be 6 years I would say go for it . Kids adjust easy and at that age we can still protect and influence them. . 16 is a rebellious age . Unfortunately parents have no idea or no influence what friends their teenage kids choose. If it was me I would not move with 16 years old girl to a country which culture and customs I am (or her) not familiar with and do not speak the language. I would feel that it is my responsibility to let her to have her "sweet sixteen" ...to to finish her education and start her own life ........ unless....... I could not have that choice. I understand that sometimes it is easier said than done but realize that we have to live with consequences of our actions (good or bad) for rest of our lives.. That said, there are relatively good schools in the area and the permanent disruption of her present life could even be a " good thing'....I just (personally) would not do that at her age. As always, these are only my thoughts on this matter. What ever the decision....all the best..

  13. There are kids Mexicans and foreign going to private bilingual schools and the prepa in Chapala who speak English, Those kids are not gang members, there are kids who wany to have a career. I know several boys who are gong to the prepa , one other just about to go to the university next year and several in University and they are nice kids who want to be professionalsl laters on in life.. There are good teenagers around, not all are gang members...Only people who are not around kids would say that.. I learned Spanish at 53 and I was ok after 3 years so a kids wanting to learn will not be bad off after 2 years of Spanish in high school. I went to school in Germany at age 11 after one year of German , it was a little difficult but kids adapt, I also went to school to in England at age 16 after 2 years of English and that was tougher but I survived.. In both cases I live with a family who did not speak my language so kids adapt but it all depends on the kid. Where there is a will there is a way , it all depends how willing is your daughter to adapt rather than on the schools here or the number of US kids . Do not look for US kids, look for kids who can speak English or want to learn and she will find friends. I know severalMexican teenagers who go to both private schools or the prepa in Chapala and can speak English not all kifs in the area are gang member and good for nothing .

  14. Thanks for that clarification. I have actually seen it many times referred to as 'plaza' in the news, as in the Nueva Plaza Cartel in Jalisco, et al.

  15. I most definitely would NOT do that. It is one thing for an unopened package to be brought in by a courier, be perused by a customs inspector and pay the necessary customs duty involved than to try and bring it in yourself crossing ANY border (U.S./Canada or U.S./Mexico or Canada/Mexico). If this is a health issue, then plan well in advance to make sure you have product IN the countries you visit BEFORE you get there. Do NOT transport it yourself.

  18. I went for the first time today and found my chilis en nogada perfect and so large that half was brought home. The salad was excellent and included avocado slices and fantastic dressing, it being served on the side. The beer was cold and came with a frosted mug. Their location would be great for a tire store. As a restaurant you have to ignore the quite loud road noise.

  19. Well, there are plenty of expat kids in the area and a good handful in the Chapala Preparatory School here, my nephew included. The only caveat being that most were brought down when they were younger and were given time to assimilate. There are also plenty of Mexican-American children here who were forced to relocate back to México and also are having to learn Spanish. Also, many Mexican highschool age kids can speak pretty decent English. 16 is a difficult age but I also see the many benefits that a teenager will get from living abroard for several years. And regarding drugs and violence, my opinion is that it is much worse for kids in the States than down here.

  20. The United States Supreme Court seems to disagree with Zuckerberg, ruling in McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Commission that the First Amendment protects our right to be anonymous: Protections for anonymous speech are vital to democratic discourse. Allowing dissenters to shield their identities frees them to express critical, minority views . . . Anonymity is a shield from the tyranny of the majority. . . . It thus exemplifies the purpose behind the Bill of Rights, and of the First Amendment in particular: to protect unpopular individuals from retaliation . . . at the hand of an intolerant society. https://www.abine.com/blog/2011/internet-anonymity-or-not/

  22. Remember that it is Mexico! where there are as many 'right or wrong' answers as their are people giving said. Having given that caveat, me thinks that the 'law' states that the TIP is valid for as long as the holder's visa is valid.... so yours should be good to go for the duration. But if it were me, and I was in a position to do so, I'd visit Aduana annually at the 'renewal' time.

  24. This is about the parent's moving here. What about the 16 years old college planning in possibly 2 years from now? A teen at her age should have some priorities when it comes to parent's moving, esp. out of the country.

  28. There are lots of great kids in the area with who go .to bilingual schools and plan on college. They are well adapted and learn the language well being immersed in Spanish. A family that I know have several kids in school and they are so proud how all the kids speak Spanish and are part of the school. Most kids in bilingual schools appreciate their learning experience and have goals of college. Just go to the prepatoria school in Chapala. It is part of the university of Guadalajara. When they graduate, they do plan on going to the university. I know a group of kids going there and have goals of becoming doctors, arquitects, etc. Your daughter will assimilate and will have lots of friends and will be with kids that have future goals of higher learning

  31. RickS, the word you're looking for isn't "plaza". It's plazo. Easy to get confused. In criminal jargon, it means "control of a place".

  32. The house we bought was built in such a way that the aljibe and septic "dump" were just feet apart. Tree roots had broken into the aljibe and I could imagine what was seeping into our water source. 😕 We had the old "dump" (under a later added terraza) drained, lime added, and concreted closed, then a a new Biodigester and 3- gray water tanks built as far away from the aljibe as was possible on a small lot. The old, diseased trees were removed along with an amazing amount of roots and algae from the aljibe which was rebuilt, scrubbed clean and kept clean since.

What does your drain setup under the kitchen sink look like? Is it just a piece of corrugated (ridged) flexible pipe? Or is it pvc pipe that has a U shape to it with the U falling below the entrance to the drain in the wall?

  36. You know, Pappy, while many people prefer to call in a professional for almost everything, some of us actually are pretty good at DIY and troubleshooting, and may not actually mind trying to solve an issue ourselves. There's nothing wrong with asking for input and possible solutions and similar experiences on a public forum. As you say, it's not the same asking about a plumbing issue as asking for leagal or medical advice. For me, calling in an "expert", even a highly recommended one, has often resulted in them not being able to come up with any better solution than I came up with, sometimes a great deal of unneccesary muss and fuss, not to mention waiting around for the tradesperson to show up. I've gotten pretty adept at replacing my toilet guts when they wear out, gluing grey water pipes together, and many other maintainance and repair chores. I even enjoy the feeling of being able to do such things myself. Having to call in a professional is my last resort, not my first go-to choice. Three years ago I hired professional painters to clean, scrape and repaint my metal staircase. The paint started flaking off the treads within 4 months. So I repainted it myself. I took care in every step, from cleaning, to wire brushing, to scraping, to sanding, to applying the primer (not thinned down like the painters like to do here) and applying 2 coats of paint. It has been 2 years since I did it and it still looks great, no peeling paint anywhere. That was one job I decidedly did NOT enjoy- it was really hard work. But I did a much more professional job than the professionals I paid. (and it was the 3rd time I had hired professional painters to do the job over the years)

  37. If the house sells quickly, that could be a good idea. But what I see so much is people painting the exterior white (which looks great in ads or travel magazines) but then it's almost always covered in dust unless you want spend your time or money constantly hosing it down or powerwashing (which usually blasts off the paint). The outside of my house is actually purposely the exact same color as the dirt 🙂 My advice woud be to go with a neutral that doesn't easily show dirt, then punch it up by using something colorful on the front door or other detail areas. If prospective buyers don't like that color, it's less of a daunting expense to just repaint a door or some window frames than the entire exterior.

  38. I cannot support any Michael Jackson based endeavor. He paid off the parents of lower-class kids that he molested, otherwise he would have died in prison. Yeah, yeah, he was found not guilty.....but so was OJ. Fame seems to matter a lot to jurors in California celebrity trials. Cruz Roja and all other sponsors of a Michael Jackson song/video celebration should avoid any affiliation.

  45. Quoting Senoir D, "You may love it or you may not but they deserve a chance to serve you , give them a shot . Remember , if you don't like something doesn't mean it's wrong , just not necessarily for you." Quoting Computer Guy, "lectures me on how I should think about it, and how I should give them a chance, and how everyone is different. In my mid-60s now, I think I've figured that part of life out" Sounds like to me Computer Guy you may have it all figured out in your mid 60's but might want to re-read what Senoir D wrote in his comment. I do not see where he LECTURED anyone. Just gave a nice write up about a place he ate today and wanted to let people know his thoughts and impression, PERIOD. Might you be having a bad day, can't read, comprehend or what? You should apologize for your rude remarks.

  49. Its not about charity, never was. Im glad you can not understand these pedophile loving, sickos who love to terrorize the small children here with thier gross Zombie , sick behaviour , From what i heard from some of the Mexican people, the event may not go so smoothly for the ugly gringos this year, time will tell. I just read about a Canadian in Cancun who was allegedly a pedophile, seems that many of the Mexican people have had enough of pedophiles and thier supporters, the guys body was rolled up in a rug, reports said he died hard, if he was indeed a child abuser, I wont be crying about his demise. May he and all child abusers rest in hell. By the way, I was once a significate donor to the red cross, but have not given a dime since they allowed this evil to be associated with tier name.
