  2. It seems a shame to smack a restaurant so early in the game, but Ismat should know his stuff by now. My guess is he caught a taste for a quick buck selling steamtray food those first couple of months at Pancho's, and thought this would be a good (and needed) idea. I waited 30 minutes for my order, because they took phone-in orders before they cooked mine. Okay, they'll learn. The manager even said they need a third fryer to keep up. I had no complaints at the time about that. Here's what I didn't like: the worst fried chicken I may have ever had. Overcooked by many minutes, practically black. When chicken skin gets that overdone, it becomes a crusty displeasure. And greasy... way too greasy. A companion said there was no flavour in the chicken, either. Then I found out on my way home with my takeout order that they gave me two thighs and two wings instead of thighs and legs. $119p for four pieces, whatever they are, is twice what Soriana and Walmart charge. Why compare to those stores? Because they use pressure fryers, on timers, which means they cook properly internally without burning on the outside. But it's more than that. I was perfectly happy to pay the price when I thought it might be good. After all, I went there and ordered, knowing the cost. No, it was the smell of overripe chicken that finally did me in. You know that smell that chicken gets when it's been thawed for too long? Considering the rather large orders and long wait times, I would assume that they were using fresher and fresher birds... but maybe not. And when you over-use deep-fryer oil, it gets burned itself, and takes on the flavour of whatever is in it. So that smell, just a whiff of it, was probably a mix of both overexposed skin and flavoured grease. On the plus side, a couple of nice small warm buns (oh, burnt on one side from being on the flatop), some delicious "country gravy" as one of the sauce selections (delicious for me means overly salted for many others), and cheery service. I could not finish the chicken, and I love fried chicken. My stomach is still reeling; not from bad chicken, but too much grease and cooking. (NOTE: I didn't compare it to Tony's fried chicken, which is also costly these days, because that's not southern fried chicken. That is some kind of battered chicken I've never seen anywhere else.)

  4. Again, good doctors is not enough. If you’re ever in Cancun you should go check out the facilities. Good hospitals in GDL or DF doesn’t mean Cancun has good hospitals.

  11. For those who have made the switch and are interested in logging into your account to look at statements, billing history and make a payment here's how. The main page is located at http://www.ilox.mx/ At the bottom of the page there are 6 boxes. The rightmost one on the top row is called "Más Servicios". Click that to box to get to the login page. There you enter the email address you gave ILOX when you signed up. The password instructions reference a FSAN that don't exist the back of the black 4 port modem. Maybe it does on the 2 port but if your modem does not have a FSAN you enter the SN (serial number) that starts with FHTT. The first 4 characters must be entered upper case while the rest are lower case. Auto payments by credit card must be set up at the office.

  12. The problem seems to be with all the dishonest people who generally realize how easy it is to scam any government funded plan and especially Medicare. Do a search on Medicare fraud and you will see how big a problem it is. Maybe if we put a bounty on these low-lifes the rest of us could have everything at a lower cost. But then some people would complain we are abusing "the poorest among us". Right, if you buy that I have this bridge that I really need to sell, and today only....

  13. I posted the article because it was the first time I heard of a US insurance company sending patients to Mexico for medical services and paying for their care here. I found that a hopeful sign that perhaps one day Medicare would see the cost savings in allowing expats in Mexico to be covered for medical services here. I really don't care if it is a US doctor or a Mexican doctor; I have seen excellent doctors and gotten great care on both sides of the border. I just saw it as a sign that if one insurer is doing this, others may follow with the ultimate hope that Medicare would get in on the action. Given that Mexican doctors would be even more cost-saving (no transportation costs, lower wages), it may dawn on US insurers to expand the program to include Mexican doctors. Yeah, yeah....pie in the sky.

  16. Producing large quantities of correctly fried chicken is virtually impossible without commercial pressure fryers . Regular commercial deep fryers cannot hold the 325 degree temps needed when you drop 6 - 8 pieces of room temp chicken in there..never mind refrigerated ! The temptation is to raise the temp , which burns the coating before the chicken is cooked .The size of the chicken is also V I P. .. in the U S the bird of choice is usually a “ broiler / fryer “ which is a designated age and size , not to be confused with a “ spring chicken “.... not too many of them around here anyway....no offense ladies......

  18. The thing is, it's not just a question of time, with oil. It's how much it's been used. Oil that stays hot enough to cook dozens and dozens of pieces just... wears out.

  19. Sounds like he must have decided to save money on oil and bought some from the guy who goes around collecting the old oil from restaurants. If he just opened, how could the oil already be that bad?

  21. Warehouse is located on Jose Santana Ote Just before you get to Hidalgo Eje Sur. From plaza you can walk one block south on Hidalgo Eje Sur turn left at Jose Santana Ote and you are there. I bought a sleeper couch and table and chairs at prices cheaper than Ajijic or Chapala.

  22. Or Canada. Neither are the alleged antique shops here but like anything, you can find exceptions for the odd treasure. As an example,I got this Maine, Federal period ,circa 1820, tilt top lamp table from an antique consignment shop in west Ajijic which is no longer there unfortunately.

  23. You can find just about anything you want stylewise, it is a question of knowing where to look. SO take it slowly until you know what you want and once you decide on the style ask for the places where to look.. Yes the bazaars are places to look at but they are no bargain here compare to Europe or the States.

  24. @Jreboll Sorry for your loss. When I said I'd hope this would catch on, I am hoping the concept would spread throughout Mexico including at GDL hospitals. And of course that Medicare would be interested in taking advantage of these savings quoted in the article.

  26. "Cooked to order" makes no difference if it comes out like burnt toast, Tom. And Soriana's chicken goes fast. And to me there is a huge difference between "nit-picking" and "disgust". And Tom: what about the smell I mentioned? I should add, it wasn't just mine... everyone's plate looked the same. I didn't see the takeout stuff, of course.

  27. Good ol' giltner, continuing to haunt and spook from afar. Even Breitbart admits: "The registration form on the DNC website require that attendees be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and enter passport or green card numbers. It is illegal for foreigners to contribute to American political campaigns."

  33. There is a furniture store next to Sunrise Cafe on the Carretera in San Antonio (can't think of the name). They have good quality furniture. There is another called San Francisco in Chapala on the SE corner of Francisco Madero and Hidalgo, right as you enter Chapala. May not be as good quality as the one in SAT but passable. Otherwise, try any of the local bazaars. Good idea to rent Air BNB and have a good look around first.

  35. I am happy to say that after many years of too much noise in my area, things have improved. Not perfect, but now bearable, thanks to neighborhood organization with Mexicans to lodge complaints, all a few years ago, that have basically stuck. El Barco made changes in their place, the upstairs outdoor bar at Plaza Bugambilia was changed to a gym which was pretty noisy for a while, with the bar re-located just underneath it, karma, karma!!! Then the bar closed after 2 years. The gym is now under new owners, and less noisy than before. We are keeping our fingers crossed. The kiddie evento place behind Plaza B. has been very complicit in the rules, no more noise! Still happy parties where people can talk and you can hear the happy kids playing. The key is for the local neighbors to organize, and this includes the Mexicans which might require that you speak Spanish. This noise issue is NOT a gringo issue, plenty of Mexicans also suffer from the noise but they don't know what to do about it. You can see evidence of that on the FB page of cruzadacontraelruido (crusade against the noise) which has well over 35,000 likes. https://www.facebook.com/CruzadaContraElRuido/

  39. The lady who was in the country house has passed away. She had already sold the house. Her husband has returned to sell off the furnishings, probably through Julie and Wayne Hensley. If you want to sell fine antiques, you pretty well have to go through Guadalajara. I am interested in, and skilled in, decorative and applied arts. Happy (pedro) is into folk art, much of which I find quite laughable and a bit of a rather clever con. To be fair though, this is much the same in fine art.

  41. Speculation and innuendo about her age and condition will only stop on an individual by individual decision and not something mandated as a group order by another member. It has always been that way on these forums. That aside, the facts we do know are indisputable, such as where the vehicle started and where it ended up. We also know that this is entirely outside the norm for how one should leave a parking area in front of Pancho´s Deli. We know that there can´t be hardly any good or legitimate reasons for doing same. Most people have given the benefit of the doubt and said it was not deliberate but unintended, which is the softer approach. Even if you take the softest, kindest, gentler approach, you still have to question the driver´s ability, to be driving. Of the millions of drivers in Jalisco, Mexican and foreigners, how many drive through store fronts for any reason, or no reason?...….not many. To treat it as a non-event and just another "all in a normal day" of traffic mishaps, and feel sorry for the poor lady, is really putting your head in the sand. The punishment shouldn´t be greater than the crime but ignoring it or playing it down because I´ll get you when you have accident, escapes my reasoning.
