  1. I reread this thread to be sure I had not missed something. The OP talked about “thoughtless, rude, inconsiderate tradesmen” who don’t make a telephone call when they will be late or not be able to keep an appointment. Every comment after that discussed this problem. Where did you come up with this being “apologists for scam artists” and telling these imaginary posters to go jump in the lake? But, that was not enough. You continued your rant calling these people “criminal co-conspirators” along with the Mexican “crooks” they defend. Really? Workers are crooks and criminals because they don’t call or show up when they say they will? Over-react much?

  4. Since it makes no sense to me that he would complain about receiving a call about being late or not coming, I assumed he meant they never think about calling. Unless the OP comes back to say what he meant we will never know.

  5. I agree it depends on the US economy, but a tanking economy in the US means falling US home sales and lower sales prices. Since home sales here are almost always cash-only, buyers often need to be able to cash-out of their US home. Also a US recession and a severe stock market fall, makes people feel a bit insecure and not likely to risk buying a home with cash in a foreign country (here or elsewhere).

  6. I fail to see a reason for your angst. So what if a few posts deal with problems or questions people might be having lakeside? Oh, wait...

  7. Mainecoons is 100% correct. Use this site for good references. As for all the apologists for the scam-artists who are "just Mexicans trying to make a living".. go jump in the lake. "You just dont understand the culture" is total BS... and posturing yourself as noble is even worse. In law, we call that a criminal co-conspirator. Living here as long as I have... I am possibly more Mexican than my bloodline shows. A crook is a crook no matter where they were born or their nationality.

  8. Roberto can do painting, fix plumbing, pools, a/c units, heaters, appliances and electrical. He is honest and his prices are fair. We and our friends have used him and have no complaints. His number is: (387) 763-1200

  9. We've had quite good luck with the local tradespeople maybe because we do a lot of checking first. This group is a great source of referrals.

  18. Once again I'll just remind everyone the MEXICANS demanded and passed the noise laws. Lakeside for the most part the biggest offenders are bars that cater to EXPATS. Carry on.

  21. Oh My Goodness ! And here I thought it was really quite simple. A matter of common sense, good manners, a grasp of communication skills, and an understanding of the culture where you live.

  22. By the time you pay to ship the items to Alex, and then pay his fees and any duty that is imposed, it's cheaper in time, money and aggravation to just pay the luggage fees.

  23. And now for some comic relief... I just recently bought a new computer and wanted an SSD. I thought it stood for Stainless Steel Drive.... DUH! My brain was scrambled with all the choices internally. I didn't get the SSD... maybe later when the computer slows down and prices for them come down.

  25. I miss time-saving pre-prepped ingredients when making a meal. An upscale salad bar at large grocery store with a gazillion fresh ingredients that are already chopped, sliced and diced. Purchase in small quantities, just enough for a specific recipe and eliminate storage or waste issues.

  26. I pity the school where a basic XML document is more than a class project...the basic technical functions involved are built into the software and only require thoughtful analysis and multilingual 'labeling'. The magic is in the top level design that provides obvious utility and invites adoption. A study of the adoption, use, impact, etc. of such a tool might merit a serious study - a friend got a PhD in something like the anthropology of education from Stanford for an impact study in Micronesia over several years. <racism?> In the 80's, Jean Lave at Berkeley came up with the idea of "cognitive apprenticeships" ...</racism?>...

  27. Find better workmen. It's a pain to go through the mediocre ones, I know. When you do find them, pay them well, conform to their cultural norms, and explain your expectations/cultural norms to them. Good people want to give good service. Once you are satisfied with a worker, ask them for recommendations for other trades, and even to bring them to consult with you. Our carpenter (now retired) introduced us to our ironworker, who introduced us to our painter. They all communicate by phone, text and What's App, none speak much English, and none are cheap. We have had these workers from 3-8 years, and will continue to use them. We have what I consider cordial and appropriate employer/employee relationships. It took a lot of time and a bit of wasted $$ to get to this point, but it can be done. No call backs or waiting around unless it has been prearranged. It takes work on both sides to develop this kind of relationships.

  29. Do the tostada-making people still sell at the Wednesday Ajijic tianguis? They used to be almost at the corner of Constitución, making fresh tostadas all day. The method absolutely fascinated me: deep fry a big batch of tortillas till they're crisp, take them out of the hot oil all at once with tongs, drain for a couple of seconds. Then dip an escobetilla (see photo) in salt water, flick the salt water all over the just-out-of-the-boiling-hot-oil tortillas. Big sizzle, the water evaporates immediately, and the salt permeates the tortilla for just the right touch of salt. Just amazed me to see it. Maybe I am easily amused.

  30. And some pretend they don't understand English when they do 🙂 Never assume a Mexican doesn't know what you are saying about them or anyone else just because you are speaking English and are under the impression they don't.

  31. I did the same thing. The old laptop had a bad virus the slowed it to a crawl I couldn't get rid of. After the install it was faster than ever and still is after many years. It was a free install back then.

  32. On the other hand... I installed Win10 over Win7 when that became available and on a 7 YO laptop. Recently installed an SSD drive. Now runs like the proverbial spotted a** ape. I always do updates including the latest to Ver 1903 last week. Still got a blazingingly fast but old laptop. To each his own I guess.

  37. It has been many years since I lived in Joco, but the street that runs just north of the Plaza, Morelos, has a dozen little stores with everything from produce to fish to meat to grocery items to kitchen stuff to... Look for the large several story building on the corner - El Mercado indoor market. More shops, baked goods, meat, poultry, produce and upstairs are clothing stores and more. Can't imagine why anyone would go to Bodega??

  38. I'm way late to this conversation, but ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? No, they don't call, they don't text, they don't show up. It's all part of that wonderful Mexican culture I keep hearing so much about.
