  1. SAT comprises of more than just the village, Chula Vista, Chula Vist Norte, Ciele Vista, Mirasol, El Parque, Birds of Paradise, El Dorado, etc are all in SAT. Perhaps there are more high priced houses in Ajijic, but not really by much. The taxes on all the village buildings do not amount to much and many in Ajijic are always boasting on how little they pay in property taxes. (All the while complaining that they are not getting the bang for their buck). I do not know the boundaries of Ajijic, but SAT is very large, beyond the Fire Department on the Liberanmento, it includes Tobalandia, the Laguna Mall, Walmart. The sign on the libramiento welcoming everyone to Ajijic is in SAT not Ajijic. It goes to the lake, and to Riberas on the east. So I believe it contributes to the coffers, perhaps not as much, but then it does not get the attention from the municipality that Ajijic does. BTW, it is my understanding that the taxes go to the state and then is allocated to Chapala. The VAT is probably as high or higher from SAT due to the mall and Walmart. The residents there are not demanding or whining, just patient. They are happy and content for the most part.

  2. Transitos will continue to look for the gullible expats, hoping to make them tremble at the thought of getting involved with authority, and completely unable to chat politely in Spanish in order to ask for the ticket. Smile, "please and thank you".....¡Nada mas! 😮

  3. It seems to me that the rumor, gossip, speculation, and fantasizing about emission testing changes hourly. The official stance remains the same, but some people can not accept it and so spread the rumor, gossip, etc.

  8. Popcorn topic completely off course, so starting a cast iron thread here. Quote from raftrbr: "Glad you still have your seasoned skillets. I know they are great for cooking. I have a set of Griswold skillets but like other older people I've gone to lighter cookware. Big Mistake!" Cast iron skillets were of their time. Their resurgence is a sentimentality thing. So many companies now selling "hand crafted and forged" frypans, as if the original way was any different. And some are absolutely insanely expensive. I was happy to give up cooking on those sticky, hard to clean, super-heavy, over-smoky, ridiculous frypans, with unnecessary maintenance requirements. I keep one only now, for steaks and other items that require super-hot surfaces, or finishing in the oven. Sure, I've made fried eggs in them, but why bother going to all that trouble when a non-stick, heavy duty, aluminized for TFal pan does the job in seconds with no cleanup? Professional chefs in busy kitchens don't use cast iron any more than I do. There, I've said it. Feel free to hit me with a frypan.

  9. The other reason to use cast iron skillets is their ability to add iron to your food. Years ago the U of Guad Medical school sent out students to rural groups who were suffering from poor health. They found these people cooking on the lids of oil barrels and gave them cast iron pans, problem addressed....Your non-stick finish pan may be more convenient, but you're also getting a dose of the "teflon" finish in your food.

  11. You can't beat them for cornbread. I still have one Griswold used solely for that purpose. I melt butter in it in the oven while I'm stirring the ingredients- no sugar, because I make cornbread, not johnny cake- and when I pour my batter into the hot pan I can hear it sizzle making a crisp corny crust.

  13. If you need to cut it, you can use a handheld "Skilsaw",'but it needs an abrasive cement cutting blade, or a diamond blade. Noisy and dangerous. Wear googles, or even better full face protection, and at least a dust mask. The dust is micro-silica. Don't allow a worker to bluff/bully their way through these precautions. Lock up the saw, and when it is time to use it, supervise and nag.

  15. I built an entire small shop building out of cement board. Wood framed. In a back corner of my yard- didn't want a construction crew slinging cement all over my gardens, nor piles of sand and blocks. No muss, no fuss. Taped and plastered the outside and you can't even tell it's not built of block from the outside. Didn't use it for the roof, though. It's incredibly heavy.

  20. "Hacked" is too strong a word. "Scammed" or "phished" is a better choice. If you had clicked on a link, that would be different. Basically all you've done is confirmed to the scammers that your email address is real, and ripe for receiving hundreds more scams, as they add your address to master lists that then get re-sold and re-sold, ad infinitum.

Telmex ignoring the area for years with no one else willing to invest, or Ilox who did come in on the strength and faith of the prepaids (thanks Carolina!), are running behind, and could be a bit more communicative. I wish I could waive a magic wand and have Ilox communicate more like an NOB company, but alas, we are SOB. In some ways, thats why we all live here. Go figure.

  25. You can have any screen name and it does not mean you live there. Others have also questioned your location and your attitude. Really odd you tried 60 times according to you ... mmm.... and did not discover how to make an appointment. The SRE web site for appointments which I use several times a week for clients rarely has issues.

  28. Homophobic, really? In the U.S. too much personal genetic information in the hands of private, for profit insurance companies is a very scary thing. There is not much motive to insure someone who probably will get sick. The situation is very different where health care is a universal right and not just an opportunity to turn a profit.

  37. The issue is the fluctuation of the exchange rate and the lack of control over the date of conversion when USD pensions are automatically deposited on a date set by the payor. I prefer to buy pesos when the rate is more favorable. Then there's the issue of FBAR filings for US citizens should your balance go above $10K, as well as protection of monies in MX banks as in this most recent scam: https://www.internationalinvestment.net/news/4002405/american-expats-life-savings-disappear-mexican-bank-accounts-forex-fraud-scandal

  41. If you have your SS put into a MEX account, all of it will be converted from USD to pesos at that day's exchange rate. According to XE.com, over the last 30 days that exchange rate has ranged, as follows: 7 Jul 2019 18:00 UTC - 6 Aug 2019 18:30 UTC USD/MXN Low:18.89713 High:19.72059 Given that the average SS check is $1,461, a married couple depositing both their checks into a MEX account at the past 30 day low would result in 55,226 pesos. Deposited at the 30 day high exchange rate would result in 57,622. A difference of 2,396 pesos. While no one ever hits the exact high or low, exchange rates are not static and can be volatile. Better to have US pension checks deposited into a US account so that you can determine the best time to make withdrawals, taking advantage of better exchange days. We have never seen the need for a MEX bank account and we have owned 2 homes here to which we made substantial improvements. We use a fee free card (Schwab) that refunds the local bank fees as well, not just in MEX but world-wide.
