  2. You still are in the central highlands of Mexico with a choice of three Thai restaurants. Sorry none of them meet your standards. Hope you are able to soldier on despite this bitter disappointment.

  3. All you mentioned comes from SAT taxes and the 16 percent IVA taxes in Mexico. Property taxes have nothing to do with services. There is no comparision to your idea of property taxes here in Mexico. Mexican systems are difficult to understand but if you read my post above it might help explain their reasoning behind very low - almost free - property taxes.

  5. And the people on a limited income could possibly loose their house so you think it would be "better" for them if they can't afford to pay high property taxes? The Mexican Constitution forbids high property taxes. What your property taxes in Canada paid for the 16 percent IVA tax and SAT tax pays for in Mexico. The more you make - SAT tax - and the more you buy - 16 percent IVA tax - increases your federal tax contribution and leaves those that make very little or those that might pay no SAT tax and consume much less with the same services as everyone and their house is guaranteed to be theirs as long as they live and as long as their heirs want to live there or keep it.

  6. Really? I am surprised that in a cluster of small cities, towns, and villages in the central highlands of Mexico ā€œrealā€ Thai food is not being offered. Shocking.

  7. I have one brief question. If people with property don't pay taxes on it - particularly high value properties - where does the money come from to pay for roads, and bridges, and sewers, and police and fire protection... ? It seems the money fairies aren't doing a very good job of providing adequate funds to pay for all these services so I guess it will need to come down to paying property taxes.

  9. Yeah, I have seen those lucky poor people with their sweet deals. Want to trade places with them? I pity those unfortunate, suffering wealthy people with their ā€œresponsibility to become richā€ (whatever that means). Oh the burdens of the rich.

  10. Yes, I have been working with them and, not only are the people involved very knowledgeable about the development plans in our area, but the professionals who are fighting these illegal developments have good contacts in the state, federal and international community (Living Lakes for example which adopted Lake Chapala). The Mexico City lawyer has agreed to work with Amigos continuing his investigation and analysis of the urban planning and zoning in our area in order to legally stop over-development in protected areas. It is the only way to stop it, with good legal representation that is immune to pressure from local politicians and who has national experience in stopping this type of problem.

  11. I donā€™t see them as synonyms. To me, a picky eater is fussy or finicky, only eating certain things prepared in certain ways. On the other hand, a foodie loves food and is adventurous. They have a real interest in food, all kinds and eat for pleasure.

  12. What we have here is one liberal view and one "Horatio Alger" view. The best way of all to get rich is the simplest one: be born rich. Another one is to be born with more than the average amount of brains or beauty. As my dad said: "you can marry more money in 5 minutes than you can earn in a lifetime. (I didn't do that, any more than he did.) If you happen to be born dumb and ugly into a poor, uneducated, family, then the concept of "taking responsibility" young and working your butt off is an alien concept and the likelihood of ever having more than subsistence is unlikely. Of course, there's always cottoning up to a criminal and sharing in the take. Am I a cynic and a "realist"? You betcha. Was I lucky in life? More so than many. Did I also work my tushie off for years? Absolutely. Do I expect to change anyone's mind who still believes the "Horatio Alger" theory applies to everyone? Of course not.šŸ˜‰ Now, would one of the mods please split this thread as appropriate so as not to confuse people who think it's going to be about female underwear?šŸ˜

  13. I bet that philosophy helps you sleep better at night. All those hungry, sick, oppressed humans just havenā€™t taken responsibility and done the hard, stressful work of becoming rich. And, donā€™t get me started on those slacker kids not taking a high level of responsibility who deserve to be poor all their lives.

  14. I think the original post is long gone and settled.. Walmart has a policy and you cannot try the bras on unless they are sleeping and there is no law about trying bras.. That is it.. Lakesid7 why are youso interested in trying bras at Walmart?.. Just curious..

  17. I wasn't entirely serious there. The term "foodie" just strikes me as rather pretentious. To me, a "picky eater" is one who won't settle for poor quality or preparation....so we'll agree to disagree on that one. I would be embarrassed to call myself a "foodie, just because I appreciate it when it's well done and have a wide range of likes.

  18. I was fine with the bra thing and protesting, bashing Walmart, but then it turned to the logic for the same, was that Mexico is just brim full of lawbreakers of every stripe and this was the logic for objecting to not being able to try on a bra, whether it be store policy or law. Personally, I donĀ“t care about the OP topic but I do care when I think someone is bashing the country and the people I am a part of. You donĀ“t go to someoneĀ“s house and start running down their family.

  19. Versatile thread. What started out as a "Perfectly good reason to bash Walmart, they suck" thread began morphing into a "Wow, there are quite a few foreigners living here who are ignorant about Mexicans, possibly predjudiced, and even rascist". Then it starts drifting back to "Why Walmart is uniquely terrible". All in under 10 posts! Impressive! šŸ˜„

  21. I spent much of my adult life in the San Francisco Bay Area where there were immigrants from most countries on Planet Earth and, as a result, cuisine that was authentic as you could wish for . I thoroughly enjoyed it and know the difference between "sort of" and the real deal. I don't expect to find the "real deal" in this remote outpost in the middle of another country. I sure don't need it for my happiness, either, but it would be very welcome if it happened! šŸ˜‰The local Thai restaurants provide a nice change from the usual fare.

  26. I remember one restaurant advertised a real Thai Chef. Well they may be a Thai and they may be a chef but they are not a real Thai Chef. With over 140 restaurants in the Ajijic area we are not exactly a little backwaters pueblo with no excellent cuisines available.

  28. In this one instance it is a good deal for them also. In other instances the rich have a greater level of responsibility to become rich and support more by paying large amounts of SAT and IVA taxes and get nothing in return. The poor have a much lower level of responsibility and benefit from all taxes collected and pay a much smaller amount of those taxes, so who actually has a sweet deal?

  29. So the rich and the poor are protected...under the constitution from high property taxes.. pretty sweet deal for the rich..

  36. What an absolute load of unmitigated hogwash. CHECK YOUR FACTS. Allyn and Beverly Hunt bought that paper decades ago, both Americans. Sean is as reported, American, Michael British, both have Mexican status. Their interest is in serving the expat populace. Dale is a reporter and does not run the paper or decide what goes in it. If I want a biased viewpoint of the U.S. I'll read your stuff. Your denigration of the viewpoint of the entire country of Canada is shameful to me, and smacks of xenophobia.

Gently roll the egg with your palm like using a rolling pin to loosen the shell. Peel under cold running water and about 90% of the time the shells almost fall off. The other 10%? Quien sabe.

  38. you are paternalistic when speaking about Mexicans and that s a form or racism..more positive than the ugly one but it grates on my nerves big time.. I am Frenc and when I go to the French forum I hear the same BS... oh the French are so happy they know how to enjoy life and on and on..it is all paternalistic and offensive. people are people no matter what their culture or nationality.. nothing is perfect in any culture. You may not realize it but all these generalizing statements are a sign that you hav no clue about the culture and its people .

  39. More than 20 years ago when we first started scouting Mexico to live we were told that laws in Mexico are routinely ignored and broken. We were advised that if someone is not able to adapt to that mindset, culture or whatever you want to call it, living in Mexico would not be enjoyable. The passage of time has made that statement more and more true and relevant.

  40. Sputnik you were not funny and you were the worse offender. We were talking about bras nothing else.. You are a gringo , like it or not and , Mexicans are people like all of us no pont tellng ust how wonderful they are. Some are good and some are bad.. that is realty all over the world.. You are being very paternalistic another way of being a racist and looking down on people and you do not even realize it. The bra thing is obviously a store policy and has nothng to do with the law..

  41. Oh please dont misunderstand my post. I absolutely LOVE this country and the MEXICAN mindset. The gringos might not appreciate this but I didnt explain I was just trying to be funny. I think all the rules in the U.S. are insane. That is why I love this country and the culture. Many run the red lights because it is early in the morning and no one is coming. I see NO problem with that!! If there is an accident, people take responsibility usually. It teaches people to own up to their mistakes. When there are many many laws in a country I feel that people tend to blame others. Then the law suits come. I also dont agree with property taxes. Paying them means you never really own your home. You are paying rent. In the U.S. we paid $4000 a year so at least here it is so much better. And NO, many gringos are FAR from angels in fact we are getting out of our current neighborhood and moving to Chapala where all are dear Mexican friends live because we are so tired of many of the gringos trying to change this area to be more like the U.S.with all its laws. Please forgive me for giving the total wrong impression!! I am a "guest" in your wonderful country, and am so sorry that in trying to be funny about trying on a bra i gave the wrong impression.

  42. The hiking group goes out both Tuesday and Fridays. They no longer meet at Donas Donuts, but up the street (Encarnacion Rosas) about 3 blocks in front of Min Wah Chinese restaurant. And they don't meet at 9 am. They meet about 8:30 am and LEAVE at 8:45. If you show up at 9 am, you'll miss the hikes. People that show up are given several trail options from short and easy, to intermediate, to difficult. They can pick the one that suits them. Some of the most interesting, well-traveled, and adventurous people participate in the hiking group. They are also some of the folks who are in the very best physical shape at Lake Chapala. It's a great way to meet people and everyone is very supportive and helpful to newbies.

  43. We are such a miserable country of miscreants, arenĀ“t we. A lot of us (Mexicans) stand in line for hours at 5 different locations in Guadalajara to get or keep our driverĀ“s license or stand in line to pay the predial every year. I donĀ“t know hardly anyone who isnĀ“t Mexican and I donĀ“t have many friends or relatives that fit your descriptive mode. Many Mexican property owners donĀ“t know what predial is???...ā€¦..hard to believe!!!! "they run them while the gringos stop"...ā€¦...Boy!!!....what did we do to deserve this angelic wave of immigration?

  44. Yes, one would think so. Frankly I could care less about their highly biased op eds on U.S. politics and wish they would stick to things of local concern. For example why Ajijic and the rest of the municipio crumbles while there seems to be all sorts of improvements in Chapala. Or why the folks in GDL are enjoying serious enforcement of noise ordinances against these bars while they blast on locally. Or why Chapala seems quite happy to ignore height limits everywhere but Chapala. Or why Chapala gvernment is constantly in hot water with the legal system. And so on. If I want a biased viewpoint of the U.s. or its president from some Canadian (GDL Reporter is Canadian owned) there are countless sources for same. What is lacking is vigilant, skeptical and probing coverage of local affair. A little light and exposure might go a long way around here to get better government for the entire municipio.

  45. I have had them not answer on more than one occasion. Hence I have not called them in months. Also they got very inconsistent (even by Mexican standards ). And there were more than a few hour+ delivery episodes. We have had excellent luck and decent pizza by ordering online with Dominoes. For the record. we detest US Dominoes and never order it there. However, MXN Dominos with the SARTEN crust is very good. ONLY the sarten (pan) crust. It is not available on all pizzas. Always get double cheese as otherwise it's a bit chintzy. Now through end of June they have a special....a large with multiple toppings for the price of a medium. Go to Arma Su Pizza (build your own pizza). And remember ONLY the sarten crust.....their other crusts suck. After you order online, you get connected to their Pizza Tracker to watch its progress from horno to your puerto. If it's not at your door in 30 minutes, it's free. Happened to us once on a busy weekend and they honored the free pizza. I think many of their specials and 30 minute guarantee are for online orders only. But it's a slick online order form. Oh...they won't guarantee 30 minutes in the rain ā˜”šŸŒ§ļø But with the special, this is a good time to give the SARTEN crust a try...as you say, YMMV. https://ordena2.dominos.com.mx/location/selectOrderType.php

They are single and couples, women and men. People here are friendly and open. If you venture out and about and explore what interests you, you will meet kindred spirits.
