  1. Or, God forbid, retain the services of a local attorney to find the real, "legal" answer and advice as to whether it is customary or you are being scammed. But...it is cheaper to get an answer here. Best of luck.

  2. None of this is in effect and the details as to what applies to a part-time person vs a full time person are not available. I suspect it applies to only full time. Social security comprises of IMSS, INFONAVIT (housing) and pension. To set it up one needs an accountant. And, for most an accountant to administer it. One payment is monthly and one is bi-monthly. Many employers are required to pay social security but usually small businesses such as a little store, a business of a few employees, etc. simply do not due to cost and typically administration not being easy. Employers also know, employees lack sufficient education to seek the benefits of social security or employees say give me a little more and forget it or they know others are waiting to take their job if they complain. As to IMSS when combined with Seguro Popular, they will have about 90 million members. So if anyone thinks this is going to increase a huge sum for a healthcare system that is always on the verge of bankruptcy, it is not going to happen. As to employee not reporting for work, a reason for termination includes more than three unjustified absences in a 30-day period.

  3. I have mild arthritis in my right hand from years of hand writing prescriptions and medical charts during the era preceding computer records and rare recurrence of left knee arthritis from an old injury. When I lived in Phoenix for 34 years it rarely bothered me except during the monsoon season a little but I used to make frequent trips to San Diego and by the third day there I felt miserable in all my involved joints plus others I wasn't aware of! Flying back in the plane in that dry environment made it all go away and it stayed away in the desert home climate. I've noticed the same thing here at Lake Chapala, arthritis is only mildly bothersome in the dry season and maybe a little more in the rainy season as I think the drier higher altitude mitigates the higher humidity here at least for me. If I go to the beach in the summer it's really bad and less really bad in the winter. I now spend the winter in the Caribbean on a mountain island at 1200-1800 feet most all of the time with higher altitude drier breezes and it's OK there too, similar to Chapala in the summer. I suspect an individual person's amount of joints involved with arthritis, the type, and length of history will impact his/her reaction at different altitudes and amounts of relative humidity so that my experience can easily be the opposite of others' stories noted above. Newcomers would likely have to come here and experience it for themselves. Before I moved here I spent a two week vacation here in all four seasons and since my arthritis was good here, I was good to move.

  4. I had to order my Egg Prick from Amazon; never could find one around here. Store the eggs tip-point down before cooking, supposedly, for centred yolks. But prick them in the fat end, where the air-bubble lies. I, too, have tried every trick under the sun to get them to peel properly. The only thing that works, no matter how you cook them or what you put in the water, is to peel them under cold running water. The water gets in between the membrane and the egg, and 3 out of 4 eggs peel without too much trouble. I also crack both ends, and roll them gently to crack the shell all around, before putting them under water.

  5. I have not seen any fibre cable, nor had any clients with fibre modems, in Chapala Haciendas. What they did do recently was upgrade the service to VDSL, thanks to the demands/requirements of the new hotel/condo development across the street.

  6. I thought food stamps, school lunches, and student loans have been cut in some instances. Don´t know about rent subsidies but unemployment is at all time low levels so that can´t be a big issue now. Which welfare should they cut? Ag businesses just got a 16 billion dollar bump in welfare so I suppose they could start there.

  8. A new scam from this couple, I think. Yesterday my Shaw installer, José Anguiano from Chapala, was at my house upgrading my system and he had to drive to Guad to have my box repaired. On the way he received a call requesting a service call. The man then called back after a short while requesting he stop at Oxxo and put $100 on the man's phone. It seems that he was driving to town as well, a car stopped short in front of him and he rear-ended it. The little girl inside didn't have a seatbelt on, hit her head, blood was flowing, and they were now all at the hospital in Guad where she needed a CAT scan. Yet he only started out with the $100 request from José. José immediately recognized the scam scenario that was about to roll out but played along with him for fun as he had three hours to kill in Guad while he waited for my box. The guy called him back several times waiting for the $100 credit on his phone as he was "almost out of minutes." José strung him along by saying he'd tried to make the transfer but the numbers must have been wrong as he'd tried "five times and it wouldn't go through." When he returned with my repaired box, he asked me to listen in on the next conversation with this guy on speakerphone. So he called him to verify the numbers again and they were correct. His voice bore a soft southern accent. The man became irritated and said, "Listen, man, you been lyin' to me and I been lyin' to you but I never "aksed" you to do nothin' you didn't wanna do." José then still maintained he'd tried and the guy hung up. When I recognized the Gullah word "aksed" I read this thread to José and I strongly suspected this was the husband of the scam couple.

  9. Thanks for asking HarryB. I was one of the founding members of the Chimalli Axixic group and our stated purpose was to curb illegal development in the hills of Ajijic. Money was raised (over 100,000 pesos) to specifically hire a lawyer from Mexico city, who is a specialist in urban planning and development. The first thing he did was to ask for the legal basis for granting a change in zoning for the Tepalo waterfall area from a protected green area to housing development. As soon as they received his request the zoning was returned to green. Some new people joined the group and resisted using the money raised to pay this lawyer, even though that was the stated purpose of the funds. I and two other members were able to get the group to send first 20,000 pesos and after almost two months 12,500. The lawyer requested extensive paperwork from the Chapala City Hall and they sent unreadable copies and only part of what he asked for. I went to City Hall and got 1972 documents (costing over 3000 pesos) and gave them to the Chimalli group to send to the Mexico City lawyer ......in March. These documents were never sent. I insisted that we keep to the original plan and send the documents and finish to pay the MEXICO city lawyer. I was asked to leave the group and threatened with legal action if I divulged the group’s plans and strategies. I understand that a lawyer from Guadalajara, whose specialty is ecological issues, was given 40,000 pesos plus a stipend of 5000 a Month to take legal action. The only thing that she has done, to my knowledge, is to attend a conference in Spain. 7 months have gone by. The above letter to the Reporter was written in March. The generous donors have a right to request clarity on the actions of this group and the expenditures to date.

  10. I have had them not answer on more than one occasion. Hence I have not called them in months. Also they got very inconsistent (even by Mexican standards ). And there were more than a few hour+ delivery episodes. We have had excellent luck and decent pizza by ordering online with Dominoes. For the record. we detest US Dominoes and never order it there. However, MXN Dominos with the SARTEN crust is very good. ONLY the sarten (pan) crust. It is not available on all pizzas. Always get double cheese as otherwise it's a bit chintzy. Now through end of June they have a special....a large with multiple toppings for the price of a medium. Go to Arma Su Pizza (build your own pizza). And remember ONLY the sarten crust.....their other crusts suck. After you order online, you get connected to their Pizza Tracker to watch its progress from horno to your puerto. If it's not at your door in 30 minutes, it's free. Happened to us once on a busy weekend and they honored the free pizza. I think many of their specials and 30 minute guarantee are for online orders only. But it's a slick online order form. Oh...they won't guarantee 30 minutes in the rain ☔🌧️ But with the special, this is a good time to give the SARTEN crust a try...as you say, YMMV. https://ordena2.dominos.com.mx/location/selectOrderType.php

  14. Is this a house you will be living in and paying rent, or is it a house you will be renting to someone else? If you will be living in the house and paying rent, to whom are you paying rent? The person or bank that receives your rent payments is your landlord (casero). There is often a requirement that renters pay one year's insurance (especially in the CDMX) to guarantee that the renters will pay the rent and abide by the terms of the rental contract. I believe that is what you are posting about.

  16. I was on a committee at our condo (Los Sabinos) to investigate having iLox fiber installed here. As others have said, they would not use existing duct/conduits, so we would have needed to install new infrastructure, either underground (expensive, requiring roads to be torn up) or along our common walls (unsightly, especially for the large junction boxes). Since most homeowners here find Telmex to be adequate, and many are part-time residents who don't use Internet that much, there wasn't enough support to make a special assessment to bring in iLox fiber. This Telmex option sounds like a reasonable alternative, with minimal initial cost, minimal disruption, and no requirement for homeowners to switch service if they're not interested. I'd like to recommend that our Board contact somebody for additional information and a quote. Someone who has been involved at other developments... do you have contact information at Telmex? Also, for anybody who already has Telmex fiber (in a condo or elsewhere), can you comment on your experience with it and let us know what speeds you're getting? Thanks for any input!

  17. Incompetence is the word, alright. I've seen a lot of slovenly activity over 20 years here: gas trucks, CFE, TelMex, myriad small businesses, Telecable and Izzi in particular. But this really takes the cake.
    1 point
  18. Unfortunately, it is true. Izzi or Wizz as the Chapala office now says on their sign is turning off everyone's service until you come down to pay to have it turned back on. If you have already paid for June, it doesn't matter because according to them you were paying Telecable, now you must come in and pay Izzi or Wizz or whoever they really are. The line in front of the Chapala office was halfway down the street. But with all the new internet and television options becoming available, they will pay highly for their incompetence.

  22. I serve on the board of a condominium with underground utilities. We have a contract with TELMEX to replace the existing copper wiring with fiber optic cable and all homes will have the option of high speed internet. Any homes without TELMEX phone service will be provided with a number if they want the internet package. Owners can chose to keep their existing services at the same costs or move to a high speed package including a new modem. Rates for the packages are cheaper than what I pay now. I was in charge of the project for our development and have emails from ILOX stating they would not use any TELMEX overground or underground facilities. ILOX suggested options were string aerial cable or install additional conduits which requires major work to the roads. ILOX would not use the underground CFE conduits due to the danger from the power and water in the conduits. We started working with TELMEX in March 2018 and the contract was finalized in May 2019. There are several developments lakeside that already have or in the process of getting TELMEX high speed service which in our assessment was the only practical option for developments with underground utilities.

  25. Telmex and CFE "own" the underground conduits so that no third-party can come along, run their cabling through it willy-nilly, and damage the existing - and very important - telephone and electrical lines. It ensures the homeowners are protected, not "held for ransom". Very homeowner friendly, if you ask me.

  26. Seeing all the dirty tricks the government pull to avoid giving information even when a lawyer is involved the GP stands very little chance to get information the government does not want to give.. They are dragging their feet on everythng as they are all involved in this going way back and do not want to be exposed for what they are... Yes Dale Palfry is doing a good job considering the situation.

  27. Harry, are you referring to the Chamala group or The Guadalajara Reporter? If the newspaper: They can really only report on the news. They don't have an a "investigative team". This is a very small operation. They all work exceedingly hard to fill that paper with information relevant to the area. Dale Palfry does a helluva balancing act, trying to get the truth out of municipal government with a firm stance while not offending to the point where she is refused access. I don't know how she manages.

  29. Yes, really!!!!! Geez, just because we don't agree with your choice doesn't mean ours isn't just as valid. Yes, we always give a pay raise and yes, we know that we have to pay a finquito AND WILL DO SO. We employed them under one set of rules and the rules have changed on us. We choose not to continue under this new rule. Don't assume the worst of people, or that they're ignorant of the employment laws, just because they choose to do something other than you. We simply don't want to get bogged down in what could be a lot of legal red tape. Hopefully, not, but I don't have a lot of faith in any government implementing a rule with minimal pain.

  31. You are absolutely right. And I've thought about this, too. Because the Mexican government will now have a whole 'nother source of tax revenue. But right now the way it is, we employers are supposed to pay the state (income) tax. Although I think the cleaning ladies are going to be leery of anything and everything having to do with the government. This is totally new for them. There are going to be 2 distinct groups: those who want/need these additional benefits, and those who don't. I don't think they will be given a choice. So they will have to comply, or work under-the -table. And then we, the employers, are going to be at risk for all the liability that goes along with it. Personally I think these domestics should become independent contractors and have to provide their own coverage, build it into their rates. That way they, the domestics, have quite a bit of control over their income, because they can undercut their competition and get more jobs. But that way of thinking doesn't seem to go over real well here.

  36. I was waiting to see if they were going to do anything. Hope springs eternal, but now I realize that the money raised is not going to the original purpose and the illegal building goes in unabated. in fact a hotel is being built on the Chapinaya at the moment on land which is reserved as protected Forrest land. The permit was given by the ex/mayor javier degollado in 2017. He is currently a city council member.
