  4. II travel a ot and on back roads and never had to ever have even a sandwich.. There is always a place to buy food while on the road or some type of restaurant. Stay away from things that are not cooked and most of the time it is ok.. I even have offered to pay for someone to cook me a meal in remote villages and they always have cooked something for me and I always have a tough time paying for the food. There are always beans on the fire , tortilla ready to be made and eggs from the chiken and people will help if you are stuck. Get off the toll road and find a place to eat if you are hungry and enjoy the experience.

  5. Very much agree. Just look at Tango which has been going strong for 14 years. Good food, reasonable prices and good service. Restaurants that fail violate one or all three. Southern Sisters is a good example of the latter.

  6. Not wanting to hijack the Small Claims thread, starting this new one. The above is a quote from Ajijic_hiker. I would say that comment might be a bit of an overstatement. The percentage of people who use this board, compared to the number of expats who live here, is miniscule. And of course Mexicans and tourists make up a huge part of the restaurant-going public, and they don't read this board. Sure, a new restaurant may get a nice bump for a week or so from the maybe dozen people on this board who will try it. But to say they have an influence on how well or how poorly a place does... no. A restaurant here survives or dies based on its own merits. The fact that we have so many die has nothing to do with a bad review from one of us. In fact, I know even a cursory overview of past reviews will reveal very, very few negative posts. It usually only happens when something really bad has caused a nasty visit. I personally dislike jumping down the throat of a place I didn't like; rather, you'll see my posts are generally only positive ones. (That doesn't mean I avoid anything negative within those comments.) And most members here are the same. But again, the very small group of people who like to eat out and report their findings here, is far too puny to make any kind of an impact, except for that initial round. Now, it may be misleading for the restaurant owner, who is surprised by having a bunch of guests during the opening week or so, only to discover that the "crowd" has dwindled out the next week. But that should only cause an owner to redouble efforts. Which they often don't, especially when they don't even bother maintaining a firm grip on day-to-day operations. So many of them are off-site, and that just doesn't work. Look at the popular restaurants: the owners are always there.

  8. I agree with you mostly, but I do feel your exponential returns are far too high. I base this on frequenting all kinds of places, but more than that, having a friend in the advertising business here who knows every restaurant owner well, and exactly what effect a review on this board has, and how briefly it lasts. But this board has also taught me whose tastebuds I trust, and whose I don't. I've been surprised by people I am friends with who have no taste at all. At least not in my world, and that is about as subjective as it gets, lol.

  9. It's possible that the system (MiTelcel) that shows how much data you've consumed, may not be a "real time" measurement. It might take a few hours or longer before that system is updated. If so, when you shut down the modem and then check MiTelCel, if you check it later (maybe in the morning) before turning the modem back on, the data may have changed. Is your Telcel modem a Huawei model? Is Wifi turned on? Do you still use the original Huawei password? There is talk of apps available that can provide the original passwords used for (all/some) Huawei modems. Having the app and a little time, a person may be able to determine your password, and then possibly using your Wifi for their own needs. Even if you've changed from the original, a determined knowledgeable person can probably figure out your password by using other tools available. There are various programs that can offer you some information, "whosonmywifi" is one. A program for Windows, it can scan your modem's Wifi connections and tell you the ID of each device connected. You can learn the ID number of each of your devices by checking them individually, or, you turn on the modem, make sure no one is connected, and scan with the above program. In this fashion, there shouldn't be any devices connected, and the program should tell you there are no connections. Then you can add devices one at a time, and rescan between each one connected, and write down the device ID's the program shows you. Another option might be to (get help) set up your modem so that only the devices you approve, can connect via your Wifi.

  11. My cell phones sucks MB day and night, whether awake or in sleep mode. There are many apps that provide constant notifications, and check regularly for updates, and so on. Many are intrinsic to the operating system of the company that made the phone, and cannot be uninstalled, but can often be disabled. I make judicious use of the ability to use only WiFi when at home and only data when on the road, but there are a number of confusing settings, and they are different for ever brand and even for every model within a brand. My own phone is set so it never updates a: unless I tell it too, and b: only when I am on WiFi. At this moment, there are 125 updates "waiting". It is very difficult to access someone else's WiFi without having the right tools, and sitting outside your house with a laptop and using those tools... none of which are easily available and some that case thousands of dollars. It is doubtful that any fly-by-night WiFi thief can do that, or would care enough about your specific WiFi location to even try. I recommend you dig through ALL the settings on your phone, using Google when you need help with any particular one. I might add that 100MB is not much at all when videos and voice chat is involved.

  13. Of course not. If I had meant that, I would have said so. Maybe I'm being dense here, but you originally said that Bancomer has never contacted you with a possible fraud alert. Now you say you've never had any fraud activity on your account. So why would Bancomer contact you with a fraud alert if there's never been fraud on your account and how do you know that they wouldn't if such a thing were to occur?

  14. I grew up in Europe after the war and we had little, some people were happy to work for room and board.. My grand mother had a woman living in the house who did nothng but mending and ironing clothes all day.. She mended socks on the ivory eggs and stocking, sweaters, undid old sweaters and made new ones with the old wool.. people had no cash and no extra things and that included some of the upper classes in the country. They had land but not much else then everything changed and everyone went crazy.. that s liife things come and go.. we will go back to being frugal or will kill each other when there is not enough for everybody.. I remember that the countess Pichon de Longueville Baron in the 80´s telling me how poor they were during the war... She had large properties but no cash, people lived and worked on her estates for room and board..and then things changed.. they demanded salaries, moved out of the old farm houses and built new modern houses and the countess became rch again selling her expensive wines...

  17. In the case of the route this traveler is taking, I'd advise staying on the toll roads. There are places (far between) to get gas with small stores where food is sold. (I've noticed the ice cream bars are much better than in the U.S.) I've never had troubles from the packaged sandwiches which obviously come from a large distributor. Just give them a little squeeze to be sure the bread is reasonably fresh. There's a large turnover is such places, which is good.

  19. Chava had trouble with his truck the last couple of days. Believe me, he hates to not make his deliveries because he lives on his tips, not the water charges. I got water today about 1 but his truck was not working properly then. I like him and he is always courteous. I will continue to use him.

  23. Always remember we are only hearing one side of the story. I remember a few years ago a gringa in a Coastal town wanted a particular dress in her size but in a different color. The shop owner took a deposit and ordered the dress. The manufacturer had sold out of that dress so her size and color were no longer available. The shop owner returned her deposit and after she had a major temper tantrum, offered her a discount on something else. She wanted that dress in her size and color!!!! She posted a particularly nasty inaccurate review on Facebook so the shop owner sued her for libel and won.

  27. The issue with Monex is they are not a bank so funds are not protected. FYI Monex is a US subsidiary out of Texas. Having money in Monex is akin to asking your buddy to invest your money for you. It was a Ponzi scheme manipulated by people working for Monex. Unfortunately, many of those conned seldom checked their bank account. Texas authorities are now also investigating Monex.

  28. I agree with Rick, a foreigner buying a Mexican plated car in Texas is not a standard everyday occurrence, so everyone is guessing. I would almost bet if you asked three different officials at Aduana, you would probably get three different answers also.

  29. Nice to see the former Ajijic Clinic has been rebranded as Hospital Ajijic and is getting a facelift. New facade, big plate glass doors, planting etc. Over the years I have had excellent care and even surgery in their operating room. I think they are poised to give the San Antonio Hospital a run for their money

  30. Thanks, Tom. Fresh, I presume, if only available those three days. I will check online and see if I can find info on whether CostCo scallops are "dry" or have been soaked with phosphates/STP. (EDIT: I see they have them frozen for sure: https://www.lakeside-ss.com/tienda-online/Kirkland-Scallops-Callos-de-Hacha-frozen-bag-p45193949) SO expensive. https://www.fishex.com/scallops/wet-vs-dry EDIT: Wow, I found an actual article about their scallops. It insists that their canned tuna and shrimp, and fresh scallops, are not soaked in water-plumping chemicals. http://www.costcoconnection.com/connection/200806?pg=70#pg70

  34. I am not going to mince words here. Yes, they are active again (or still ) in this area. After having a LONG visit (7 months) with my son nob, I have been back less than a week. Yesterday, in my Inbox on my private email was a "gift" from her... They must have seen me in the Avenida in Chapala or perhaps in the mall in Ajijic. She began posting here as 'Denise.' Then changed to 'Paschall1964', then to 'Peanut1964." Her gmail is Paschall 1964@gmail.com. She has a FB page, but I don't do FB. They arrived down here last July/August - she posting ahead looking for a cheap place for him to stay. Their names are Denise & Anthony Paschall. She is white & he is Afro-American. I have investigated both of them with the authorities in Florida. She claims to have been a classroom teacher (who specializes in teaching 'Shakespeare,' LOL), according to her FB page. If so, must have been voluntary, because there is no record of her on the Florida Classroom Teachers Association, nor the Retired Teachers Association. (My grandparents were teachers - I know where to look.). Likewise, since he claimed to be a parole officer, I checked with the Dade County & Ocala Police Departments, as well as the Florida Bureau of Pardons & Paroles. Never heard of him. He's 48. Awful young to retire. They said they had 30 years' credentials??? Really? Musta started at 18, then. I tried to warn about a year ago & was just shut down by the Admin/Mods. Nobody asked my side of the story at all. I don't participate much in this forum, but most DEF do not appreciate being stalked. Interact with them at your own risk. They got me one night (after I had shopped ONCE with her, so she had my phone number) after I'd taken my sleeping tablet, begging if they could spend ONE night because their car had exploded on the road from PV... Bullied & threatened me physically, etc. Never paid me anything like rent. Made a hella mess of everything. I had to have them removed by force almost 10 days later. I am a gentle person & had never encountered this "type" before. I was stupid. However, I stand behind every word I have ever said about this couple.

  36. Thinking back, I was sent to PROFECO one time by the M.P. and it was a 100% waste of time. A lot of some of the not the nicest people know that most gringos will just eat the loss rather than take a minimum of two trips to PROFECO. And as said abive,If you left one T not crossed, they will tel you to fix it and come back. Yes, if your time is worth little to nothing, it might be worth it, but usually not. That is why I would love to see something like the BBB here, or a Small Claims court that could make binding orders/judgments. Too much to ask?
