  1. I don't do that because the cashier has to account for missing money in the till when it doesn't jive with the receipts. They'll either have to pay it out of their own pocket or likely get fired. It could be argued that they should get fired if they can't pay attention to the job they're being paid to do, but I'd not like to think some woman with a family to support had to cough up 300 pesos that she mistakenly handed me.

  2. I was talking about business and commercial transactions; not government, police or the judicial system which is corrupt to the core. I have been doing business with artists, indigenous groups, families and many organizations here for more years than I care to mention and have had almost no problems with any of this. And to say that many hardworking cashiers or store clerks are scamming the vulnerable Gringos here is simply ludicrous!!!

  4. OK.... you've made exactly the right start. Now.... (1) if he is usually a totally indoor cat, he won't go as far as if he's indoor/outdoor.... so judge your search radius by that. (2) start calling him now, of course (I'm assuming you have posters at each end of your block and on your house/garage door) (3) a little later when it gets dark ( a frightened cat will hunker down and hide), go out with a flashlight and a little bag(dish of dry food or dry treats so you can call, shake the food, stand still and LISTEN, move along a bit, and repeat. (4) Use the light to look into every single space he might be able to access, no matter if you think it's too small or not -- inside and then outside your yard. I have found cats under hot water heaters that were standing right on the floor, behind a bucket leaning up against a wall under a table (cat was "standing" on its haunches, back up against the wall, to fit into the space), in the middle of bougainvillea shrubs, behind a washing machine (flashlight was the only aide), and many, many other places. DO NOT GIVE UP!! Many years ago a cat named Felix was lost from a vet clinic in San Antonio. People followed my advice. Took a MONTH to find him, in a vacant section of what is now El Parque. But find him they did, and until very recently he happily lived with his family in Chapala Haciendas. PLEASE let us know how it goes..... we cat and animal people all care.

  5. With all due respect...Before putting $100,000 pesos in an account in a foreign country that you need to ask for help on a chat board, you might want to consider that you don't yet have the expertise to do that. Perhaps close that account and seek professional help. I'm sure there are no dishonest people on here who would volunteer to "help you" (ahem) but I can't guarantee that. Best of luck!

  9. Does your new number look like 109-xxxx? If so that’s the Ilox number assigned to you. Every customer gets one whether or not you want to use it. If you want to port your Telmex number to Ilox, dial 051on your Telmex line. You will hear a message in Spanish that will end with speaking a 4 digit PIN number. That is the number needed to give Ilox permission to port and take ownership of the Telmex number. Now write an email to noc@mail.ilox.mx, tell them you want to port your Telmex number, give them the contract number, service address, youe name, phone number and pin. Plug a phone into the phone 1 port of the modem. They will ring that number when the port is complete. At that time your Telmex line will be dead - no dial tone.

  14. If anyone wants to know what Medicare covers for people who have moved to Mexico, Senor Google will inform you. The answer is, basically, nada. Part A is included with SS, but Parts B and other programs have a monthly cost, and you must go to the U.S. to use them. If you drop Part B, and later move back to the U.S., there is a large penalty for re-upping it. Yes, emergencies happening when traveling temporarily to Mexico are covered, but not for residents here. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are either misinformed or trying to perpetrate a fraud. Seguro Popular is available to residents, both temporal and permanente. Pre-existing conditions are covered, but whether a particular procedure is covered is decided by group review: in other words, a 80 year old is unlikely to get a heart transplant. The cost depends on the applicant's financial situation. IMSS is also available to both temporal and permanent residents, but pre-existing conditions are subject to a waiting period. The cost for the latter is based on age.

  17. Medicare fraud is outrageous in the US with the officials saying they can't afford to hire any more investigators because of the cost. So billions of dollars go to fraudulent providers while saving millions in employment costs. Imagine what the fraud rate would be in Mexico? That's part of the reason Medicare will never be accepted here.

  20. The opposite here. I used to trust people until they proved themselves to be untrustworthy. Got burned enough times that now I don't trust them (in the sense that I won't put myself in a position of blindly believing that everyone has good intentions) until they prove themselves to be trustworthy.

  22. My problem is that I think that I live in paradise (here, lakeside) and I was beginning to become more and more naïve, trusting everything that I saw. These posts help wake me up and begin to again be that cautious investor that I had always been. I love it here, but that does not give me the right to throw caution aside.

  23. The peer review does not take cost into consideration. In my experience most specialists in S.P. system are unlikely to even know the total costs. The review is to determine a likely successful outcome. You cannot pay to have the system speeded up or to bribe specialists. Unfortunately, your example of a heart transplant brings up another problem unique to Mexico - a severe lack of donor organs. The government and the main churches have to step up their programmes to encourage organ donors. I just read today that bodies not embalmed are buried or cremated the next day in Mexico.

I like this little gem "Don't sweat the small stuff-Robert Eliot" By the way,I have had cashiers run after me to give me some of my change that I forgot to pick up or dropped on the floor.

  31. There are foreigners that have lived here for years and never leave the "gringo world" or mentality, others that assimilate rapidly. Some that have lived here a long time still refer to where they came from, as "back home". Hardly the nomenclature of a local.

  32. Not a happy one time patron here. Ordered fish and chips and was told by owner lady it was definitely sea bass.….. NOT¡¡¡¡…..turned out as she confessed it was "basa"; Vietnamese catfish. After receiving food, two separate parties arrived with dogs and given tables, one right next to us. Won´t be returning. Don´t care how nice the owners are or how cheap their prices.

I've got 4 locations all on the same network, including the Chapala house and just added a VPS gateway in the US with it own dedicated IP for $5 mo. I haven't tested that part yet but should stream US content just fine. This may be a nice alternative to VPN's...

  38. Perhaps after you have been in Mexico a bit longer, if you make it, you will realize how foolish saying something like that makes you look to everyone within earshot. Think of it as "Losing Face" and that's what it amounts to in the Mexican culture. Same as raising your voice in Telmex or CFE. Pay attention to how the locals handle things and you won't stick out like the sore thumb or Ugly American (Canadians are just as guilty). Best of luck in your new life.

  41. Yes, we would say "Oh no! I already had this under the old rules..." and we would think hmmmm, time to find a new service provider. This doesn't apply to only Mexico. Regardless of where I was living, if the cost of having a person working for me went up more than 10% AND required me to do more work, like filing forms and keeping additional records, making trips to government offices, etc. I would certainly re-evaluate the situation. Especially if the primary reason for hiring the person was to make my life easier, not more complicated. What Mudgirl says is true: yes, there are differences between Merry Maids and our own, private housekeepers. No argument there. My point is that I do not want to be Merry Maids, and handle the employee(s) to such a degree that I have to do the bookkeeping, trips to the IMSS office to make payments, issue annual W-2 form equivalents, etc. etc. I think most of us who have housekeepers do not want to do that, and if we have to, we will end our housekeepers employment and hire a service. Which, by the way, the housekeepers do not want, as the labor market for them decreases---who will want to hire an independent housekeeper, if it is so complicated? And the independent housekeepers realize they won't be receiving the additional benefits they have when working for a private party. Finally, many of these housekeepers would prefer to be independent because they will make less money working for an agency like Merry Maids.

  43. 60 years ago the word population was 3 billion. Now 7.7 and still going up to a projected 9 or more. As more of them rise above the level of basic subsistence there is simply no way the environment can handle the waste products and associated damage. India, already a hell hole of over population is projected to gain another 400 million and China 200 million, more than almost twice the entire population of the U.S. Even if the latter cut pollution in half it would be a drop in the bucket in the face of the rise of emissions and solid waste trash from just these two. Malthus wasn't wrong, he was just too early because he didn't anticipate the green revolution would explode food production. However, said revolution is precariously supported by the explosion in the usage of fossil fuels which is driving the increase of CO2 and has no practical substitute if/when the oil starts to run out. Probably more damaging in the short term is the deluge of non degradable plastic which is flooding land and water killing everything in its path. It is silly for a bunch of privileged and shallowly indoctrinated kids to lecture anyone while burning up a lot of energy and leaving trash everywhere with their gatherings when they have no clue what the real level of sacrifice would be to actually slow let alone reverse, the pollution of this planet. Frankly, even if all of us went back to subsistence level, there are just too damn many putting out too much crap at this point to stop the coming environmental/population crash. And that includes them.

  46. SP covers heart disease including heart transplants and open heart surgery. It doesn´t do hip replacements but does do hip surgeries including screws etc. The new rules as of June 1st. have you covered for all diseases and treatment that both SP and IMSS do combined including knee replacements at both IMSS and SP. IMSS does all manor of heart disease treatment and so does the SP. If IMSS in your area isn´t set up for it they will refer patients to the SP nearby that does and vice versa. They won´t be duplicating complex treatments in the same area if the IMSS has it and the SP doesn´t and visa versa if both don´t have it already. There is talk of one of them getting dialysis in the future for kidney failure. "124. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF HEART FAILURE 207. 47. Any provider who accepts Medicare outside the US is committing fraud.
    1 point
  48. It is not a question of the providers accepting Medicare but, rather, that Medicare does not cover one out of the states. When we left we had a supplemental policy which covered one for the first 60 days out of the country. Not sure if all supplementals have that same condition but it did help us as my husband had some expensive medical needs during that time frame. We have a catastrophic coverage policy which we buy through a group policy offered by Focus on Mexico. Your choices increase the younger you are so make sure to investigate and not get shut out because you reached a certain age. Do not be deceived that some practices take Medicare. If they do they have a gimmick.
