  1. I'm a little confused - which is not unusual for me. Are some of you saying that iFibra is stringing cable for themselves - rather than as a subcontractor for Ilox? And that iFibra will be offering the packages shown on their website directly to customers at Lakeside in competition with Ilox and Telmex? Just want to clarify. I guess iFibra could be planning to provide service at Lakeside and that competition and choices can only work in our favor. I just don't see iFibra thinking that competing with Ilox would be a good idea but perhaps they will go for it. The young man that came to my house to do the original Ilox install came back this week to add the TV package that I did not order originally. I had a pretty long talk with him - as I mentioned earlier he is a really nice guy and technically very skilled. He is from Ocotlan and has worked for iFibra for quite a while. He has had Ilox paperwork with him each time he has been here and called Ilox to get the service authorized once he had done his part here at my house. He didn't know much if anything about the arrangements between Ilox and iFibra. He said he had not been told what to say - or what to not say. He just shows up and does his work. He speaks very little English - really almost none - but we haven't seemed to have had trouble communicating with each other in Spanish. I was one of the original prepaid accounts, have had my service for several months now and am very happy with the speed and with the overall experience in dealing with Ilox. Quite honestly I am stupid and apathetic - I don't know and don't care about most of the details people are getting worked up about. Ilox is working through their build-out, I am up and running, speed and service are great for me. 100% happy. Don't really care which poles are being used, if iFibra is or isn't a subcontractor for Ilox, or any of the other details folks are getting worked up about. Stringing cable is one part of the process but there are many more steps required to deliver service over those cables. Obviously lots of other folks don't see all this the way I do. Thanks once again to Tom for all his work to get this going - and for his incredible patience in dealing with all the headaches. We should double Ted's salary - but then 2 x $0 is still $0 so all I can do is to thank him profusely. This is truly a game changer for our community and for me personally.

  2. Learned long ago. (1) Stand at the check-out and count your change before moving away. Cashiers (and people behind) won't like it... they are supposed to count the change into your hand, but most times are too lazy, too busy, or trying to rip you off. Understand---- once you move away from the desk, they are within rights to say they did not make the mistake. (2) Move to one side (out of traffic) but do not leave that check-out station. Go over your bill immediately. If there is a mistake -- overcharge OR something charged you did not buy OR charged for a lot more weight than you purchased -- turn back to him/her immediately and show where it is wrong. Yes, they will have to call a supervisor. Yes, they don't like it. But if the price on the shelf is not the same as on your receipt, you again have little recourse once you step away from the area.... because in all fairness, you could have done some kind of switcheroo......

  5. The read-outs at Walmart checkouts, swivel. I always swivel them so I can read them. Catch any mistakes as they ring it up. I also use a cc so never worry about having to count my change.

  6. A guy was here literally 10 minutes ago in a vehicle with iFibra logos all over it. He once again had Ilox paperwork and was here to finish up something extra that I asked for in my Ilox setup. Same guy has been here three times now including the initial Ilox installation. The other two visits were because I asked for and paid for something extra after the initial installation. Thanks CG. Corrected Ted to Tom (I used to work with a guy named Ted Kessler). With all the work Tom has done for all of us I could at least get his name right (haha).

  18. Yeah we all work together! We are full at the Ranch with a waiting list. I talked to the good folks at Lucky Dog and they will take the Min Pin if someone can catch it. I suggest keeping your dogs inside the house, opening your gate just a little, and luring the dog with high value food like cooked liver or raw chicken. Good luck and thank you. Here is the contact information for Lucky Dog https://www.luckydoglakechapala.com/contact/

  21. We have investments here in Mexico that earn far more than is possible in the U.S. these days. Those investments and the far lower cost of living here enable us to live a lot better than we would in the U.S. We watch these accounts very very closely. What are your options in the U.S.? Getting paid a measly 2 percent if that by a bank account or playing Russian roulette with the grossly overpriced stock market.

  22. I have a Mexican bank account and about 9 months ago when we checked my balance I was over 70,000 pesos short. My wife had gone to Germany and the balance wasn't checked for a month. We went to the bank and they showed a little over 4,000 peso's was charged three or four times a week every week to my account. Luckily I had bought insurance against hacking but the bank at first said they had checked and I had bought things with these monies. All these monies went to a known hacking site in the USA, but the bank turned down our claim. Next we went to another banking official in Mexico City and he told us they had a special investigating group for these problems. We provided the group with our information and about 60 days later our money was refunded. We were probably hacked from one of the restaurants in Ajijic. The bank told us to never give anyone your credit or debit card because they can get your code off the back. Now we check the balance every week or two.

  23. Thank you Gringa Gal for your lovely review and to everyone else for your thoughts. When you have spent as many years in this industry as I have (over 50 ) you realize that listening to feedback both good and bad is important. I came to Mexico in my 30's. First in Puerto Vallarta, then Guadalajara and 30 years ago began coming to the Lake to cater private parties and then opened my first restaurant here. I have learned you can not please all of the people all of the time but that you do need to be flexible and adapt. That was the case when I opened La Terraza as a Mexican Modern concept originally. A year ago no one was doing that type of food and now in Ajijic alone there are 4 to 10 (depending on your interpretation of the term). I admit I like to stand out from the crowd and in talking to customers I had a lot of people asking for recipes they remembered me doing 25, 15 even 10 years ago. As a side bar let me say it is humbling to have people remember your cooking so vividly. That is when I began considering La Terraza Gourmet and going back to my roots in the California French Restaurant Revolution in the 70's. One of the challenges of doing that quality of food in a retirement community is menu price. I knew I could not provide the quality without raising prices which would be a deal breaker for many on a retirement budget. My solution was to give value with that price instead of the trend in restaurants (and airlines) of charging a la carte for every little thing). So the menu is a price fixe in the evening. You can relax while browsing the menu with a table appetizer (included with your meal), You can enjoy a choice of at least 2 of my popular soups, you have a salad course and then your choice of entree. AND I have tried to offer a range of entrees depending on appetite and budget. Gringa Gal the dessert is not included in the entree price it is a la carte since many of my customers either don't do dessert or eat lighter after a 4 course meal (many chose to share a dessert with their dining partner). My vision for La Terraza Gourment was a casual elegant relaxed dining experience different from other restaurants in town - a niche not being served. In answer to just serving a single entree I do continue to offer that as a lunch option all the way up to 5pm. I hope that this explains a little bit of the theory behind the menu and as always I understand a restaurant is only as good as the last happy client. PS Computer Guy: When you are as old as I am there are some days that you do dream of retirement; but I have learned after retiring a few years ago that cooking for people is in my blood and I thrive on the interaction of customers and their feed back (it is like hosting a dinner party every day). When I am ready to finally step down I will let you know 🙂 )
