  1. Well, if they recently actually reported it, why do you need to hear from them again? And what happened to the "Several people on this board have said ilox has physically cut their Telmex landlines" to whom you referred in your OP? Now it's just "2 or 3 people?"

  2. The people that I know of who are on both boards are there because the boards meet different needs. There's no joy or "schadenfreud" in it for me, for one, when either crashes. Why should there be? As far as I'm concerned, may they both "live long and prosper". The only time I get annoyed with this one is when the ugly subject of politics is allowed. I don't say "get a life": I say "get an Octagon". That way, the extreme righties and lefties could scratch that itch without polluting the rest of the threads.🙄 "

  4. Its called schadenfreud, taking pleasure in the misfortunes of others and something rarely done by nice people....and since when are folks on the other board our "enemies"? Even if some of them exhibit the attitude you dislike, becoming like them is not a positive attribute.

  5. What are you talking about, "one-sided commentary"? These people have already posted they had their lines cut. You are suggesting there is something two-sided about that? That if someone posts their line was cut, there is room for discussion? That it is merely their opinion? You might also pay more attention: I told everyone they could PM me if they didn't want to discuss it in public. You are not involved in this. Therefore, I don't need to hear from you. I need only to hear from those who had their lines cut. This is not a difficult concept to grasp.

  6. I don´t know……. Less pollution to the environment by people travelling hither and yon seeking a better price? All the stores finding the bottom price for not going into a "going out of business" scenario? Price fixing? All owned by the same extended family? Who knows?....it is what it is.

  9. It's a one-sided commentary if you only want to hear from people who say they had their lines cut, and are unhappy with Ilox. A two-sided commentary is where you hear from people with good experiences and bad ones.

  10. You want this forum post to become a one-sided commentary? We all have the right to state our opinion on this subject, whether it's good or bad. I myself, had Ilox installed, and they certainly didn't cut the Telmex line! Both lines are operational.

  11. Although I cannot recommend where to get one , I can recommend the one in Ferret's post: https://www.movilidadsinlimites.com/salva_escaleras_elite_recto.php We have it (in Canada) for couple of years now and it works well. No service needed so far. It works even if electricity is out (battery is continuously charged when "parked"). I use it seldom for myself but it has a remote control so I can send my laundry or heavier items up or down. Very useful for elders or people with limited mobility. We have a straight stairwell so installation was done within an hour .

  15. Someone is really trying to just argue and argue some more. And, for what? It is not pleasant at all to be on this web board and have to read posts from someone who just wants to be antagonistic and snarky. Computer Guy, I wish I could help you out with some info, but my Ilox hasn't been installed yet.

  16. I offered commentary, and I also gave you a post of a person whose TelMex line was cut. See how that works?? Posting on a public forum is always a two way street, with many detours and bumps in the road. But you already know that.

  17. You must have been a real charmer in English class at school. There is nothing about this topic that is commentary. Nothing at all. I asked for facts. I don't want commentary. Again, I don't see what is so difficult to grasp about this.

  18. The posts were all angry ones from people who had their landlines cut. It is illegal to interfere with TelMex service in any way. All I want are the names of the people who complained so I can discuss it with iLox and ensure it never happens again.

  19. I am another one that doesn't want to take on the responsibility of payments for SS, IMSS, etc. If a worker is an independent contractor, this is, in my opinion, THEIR responsibility, not mine. I am not going to take on the job of checking that all that is needed is done, done correctly and paid for between 6 people. It's not the $$. I don't want the extra paperwork and hassle. If she decides to participate, she should set up her own rules, get her own contracts and set her rates of pay to include these expenses. These are not children or incompetent adults we are speaking of here. Maybe it's time so many people stop treating them as if they "...just don't kmow any better, these poor people." Don't lecture me about finquitos, either. Again, I've been there and done that. If I couldnt afford a finquito, I wouldn'r have hired someone in the first place.

  20. Again, from Rolly Brook, Termination Pay: The labor laws are very pro worker. Nowhere is this more evident than in the draconian termination law. When an employee is terminated, he is entitled to termination pay; unless: 1. The employment was for a specified period of time, such as while building a house, or for house sitting for the winter while the owner is away, etc. It is best to have the time stipulation in writing. 2. For just cause. This is a very complicated issue, and you may need the help of a labor lawyer if the employee appeals to the labor review board. Just cause is spelled out in detail in the law. The termination pay shall include 3-months salary plus 20 days for each year worked plus prorated vacation and Christmas pay. 20 days means 20 times the daily rate which is 1/7 of the weekly rate. Example: A maid worked 2 days per week for $50 pesos per day for 4 years. That is $100 per week. There are 13 weeks in 3 months. Her daily rate is not $50. It is 100/7 = $14.29. So her termination pay will be (13 x 100) + (20 x 14.29 x 4) = 1300 + 1143.20 = $2443.20 plus any Christmas and vacation pay that may be due. If this termination package cannot be paid at the time of termination, regular salary shall continue until the termination is paid in full. If the employee quits voluntarily, termination pay is not required. A common tactic to avoid termination pay is to induce the employee to quit. One must take care with this because the law cited above spells out what an employer cannot do to harass a worker and his family.

    1 point
  24. The store bought orange juice or whatever other juice , regardless if it's labeled 100% natural or 100% pure or freshly squeezed and packed or not from concentrate, it doesn't taste like real. The reasons are the juice producers have to take out the oxygen during the process and add orange flavors in the case of orange juice made of orange peels. The flavor won't be listed on the juice box because it isn't required by the Mexican Federal Commission of Sanitary Risk Prevention — the regulating body in Mexico responsible for food safety. So nothing is better than the freshly squeezed orange juice.

If we post changes here, we can avoid showing up somewhere only to find they are closed due to vacation or summer hours. Here are the ones I know of: Cocinart is on vacation and reopens June 5th Sweets and Treats (bakeshop next to Cocinart) is closed entire month of May Emilia's has changed her hours for the summer, now open 8 until 5 (had been 8 to 8) Pedro's Go Bistro will be on vacation May 28th to June 1st Paninos is on vacation and reopens June 3rd Manix is on vacation and reopens May 26

  29. Thank you Gringa Gal for your lovely review and to everyone else for your thoughts. When you have spent as many years in this industry as I have (over 50 ) you realize that listening to feedback both good and bad is important. I came to Mexico in my 30's. First in Puerto Vallarta, then Guadalajara and 30 years ago began coming to the Lake to cater private parties and then opened my first restaurant here. I have learned you can not please all of the people all of the time but that you do need to be flexible and adapt. That was the case when I opened La Terraza as a Mexican Modern concept originally. A year ago no one was doing that type of food and now in Ajijic alone there are 4 to 10 (depending on your interpretation of the term). I admit I like to stand out from the crowd and in talking to customers I had a lot of people asking for recipes they remembered me doing 25, 15 even 10 years ago. As a side bar let me say it is humbling to have people remember your cooking so vividly. That is when I began considering La Terraza Gourmet and going back to my roots in the California French Restaurant Revolution in the 70's. One of the challenges of doing that quality of food in a retirement community is menu price. I knew I could not provide the quality without raising prices which would be a deal breaker for many on a retirement budget. My solution was to give value with that price instead of the trend in restaurants (and airlines) of charging a la carte for every little thing). So the menu is a price fixe in the evening. You can relax while browsing the menu with a table appetizer (included with your meal), You can enjoy a choice of at least 2 of my popular soups, you have a salad course and then your choice of entree. AND I have tried to offer a range of entrees depending on appetite and budget. Gringa Gal the dessert is not included in the entree price it is a la carte since many of my customers either don't do dessert or eat lighter after a 4 course meal (many chose to share a dessert with their dining partner). My vision for La Terraza Gourment was a casual elegant relaxed dining experience different from other restaurants in town - a niche not being served. In answer to just serving a single entree I do continue to offer that as a lunch option all the way up to 5pm. I hope that this explains a little bit of the theory behind the menu and as always I understand a restaurant is only as good as the last happy client. PS Computer Guy: When you are as old as I am there are some days that you do dream of retirement; but I have learned after retiring a few years ago that cooking for people is in my blood and I thrive on the interaction of customers and their feed back (it is like hosting a dinner party every day). When I am ready to finally step down I will let you know 🙂 )

  33. Common sense required. It's fine to wax poetic about the joys and wonders of natural juice especially freshly squeezed as you watch BUT what's natural to fruit are fructose, sucrose and glucose and when you get a beautiful refreshing glass of ,for example, orange juice there is more than one orange used and whether you like it or not there is more of those three ingredients in that glass than if you ate one orange. That's all well and good for a lot of people but not for us DIABETICS. My blood sugar reading shoots through the roof with just a third of a glass of freshly squeezed, darn it. I have discovered a couple of fruit sports drinks ,no sugars, at Soriana BUT unfortunately being sports drinks they are loaded with salt so for my other medical issues, that's bad for me too but not as bad as fresh natural juice.

  35. I have been a member of this board, under a different web name, since the board was founded. In the fall of 2008, a glitch in the Chapala.com system caused me to be unable to read or (ahem) spout off to the web boards, and I was told to create a new account here, under a different name, if I wanted to be able to fully enter the site. You joined the board in 2008? You wouldn't have a way to know that history, and it's unlikely that Chapala.com has any record of that. I came to live in Mexico in 1981, and worked as a social worker in the Tijuana city jail, AKA "La Ocho". You've been here full time for 11 years? That's a good start. "Jumex Unico Fresco..."jugo 100% natural". Notice that it doesn't say "100% jugo natural".. I stand by what I said: this advertising statement is very carefully worded to mean what the customer wants it to mean. Everybody wants to drink 100% orange juice, but that's what you get when you squeeze an orange, not what you get when you open a box of factory-processed juice. Advertising is tricky and often misleading, whether in English or Spanish.

  36. Went there today. Yes, they have a ceiba tree, small but unclimbable. Nice patio area and a quite cool interior. Tried the wild pig (javelina) burger ordered cooked well, a fruit salad, and sweet potato chips. The burger came with white cheese and pineapple slice grilled on a toasted quality bun. I wasn't about to add anything but salt to taste the meat. The best thing I can say is that I ate it all, something I haven't been able to do with most Lakeside burgers. I will go back sometime when I am on the other side of the universe and try an ostrich burger. Oh, they actually have diet sodas beyond coke, a Squirt Light on the rocks is where it is at.

  37. A few solutions to the higher temps of March, April, May and some of June: Install a mini-split air-conditioner in the bedroom. Now you are thinking, what about the CFE bill? Well, yes, there will be an increase. But if you run the a/c for only an hour a night to cool the bedroom off--the concrete walls retain the cooler temps--then you are only adding 1 kw hour a day, or 30 kw hours a month, to your bill--not enough to send you into DAC. Then I run a floor fan for the rest of the evening, measured with a Kill-a-Meter to be 40w an hour. Assuming you own your home, you can make a lot of improvements to reduce the heat. First, we repainted the imperbelizante on the roof from brick red to white. The white reflects the sun/heat. Using our laser digital thermometer we noticed a definite decrease in heat on the ceiling, by about 3C/6F. This lowered the room ambient temp, too. Next, we hung thermal insulated curtains over all the windows. This dropped the room internal temps by another couple of degrees. We put at least one big potted plant in each room. Plants respirate and decrease ambient temperature. Big potted plants (palms) outside on the terrace to filter out strong afternoon rays. I had a local carpenter make solid, internal shutters for my hottest windows. Like plantation shutters, but solid. They look great, reduce noise, and act as another insulation barrier to reduce heat. They also insulate rooms in the winter to maintain heat when we use a space heater. Overall the house's internal temperature now is about 73-75F, max, depending upon the room. That is really good this time of year, considering when we bought the house it was like a sauna and averaging about 85F this same time of year. Had some serious design flaws which I changed. All of these things cost money but then again, I am saving money by not paying to leave here for several months. ,

  38. The first two weeks in June are hot like May is, but the last 2 weeks are cooler because of the rains.
    1 point
  39. Now wait. The hottest month in our area used to be May, according to the travel books when we were checking them out in the late 1990s.. Travel books also said weather turned grand when the rains cooled things off in June. We came down for a trial run, weather in May and June turned out to be just as described, and we moved here in 1997. May/June weather stayed like that for years. Now indeed the hot months begin as early as March. Now I don't want to begin any argument about global warming. Really, I'm just sayin': It's hotter earlier now than it used to be. I agree with all the positive things being said here to answer the poster's questions. However, some of you who came here 20-plus years ago, as my husband and I did, might remember the hot month of May--and not earlier--my way. I wonder if the travel guides to living in Mexico have had to rewrite the weather. Doesn't matter to me. I'm here to stay . . . .apparently. Lexy

Student shoots teacher and classmates before killing himself at Mexican private school By ASSOCIATED PRESS JAN 18, 2017 A 15-year-old student opened fire at a private school in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey on Wednesday, shooting a teacher and two other students in the head before killing himself. 46. Well, me and a lot of others here have done 10 years or more "research" on site and I found his writing exaggerated and sensationalist. Already there is a very big effort underway to clean up the Santiago, and it has begun exactly where it need to start--with a clean up of the state's environmental office and a big jump in fines for polluting. Previously the polluters either paid off the inspectors or just paid the minimal fines because it was cheaper to pay and keep right on polluting. That day is ending rapidly. A strong program of repair and new treatment plant construction is taking shape. The Governor has enlisted a lot of qualified help to assess and recommend remediation. The security problem is a separate issue and there as well I believe the government is finally taking it seriously. I had gotten somewhat pessimistic about the future of this country as long as the PRI corruptos were running things. All over the country they were tossed out on their ears, big time here in Jalisco and I honestly believe things are getting better. As you note, the local and state government is taking the crime problem very seriously. I recommend you follow Governor Alfaro's Facebook page. It is clear he understands what has to be done and he is doing his damndest to do it. I'm amazed at the progress already made by people who have been in office less than 6 months.
