  1. I understand the cultural element and conflict quite well. I have even thought about where it comes from- for one thing, as Mexicans usually have large families, and often several generations living in the same house, there is usually always someone home- even if it's just grandpa sitting in a chair on the porch all day. So it doesn't matter if you phone first, as there is always someone there to let you in to do your job. If someone does not understand that foreigners may live alone or only a couple to a household and that they will be wasting their time waiting all day, I have no problem explaining to workers why it's important to me that they call if they can't make it, or will be significantly late. If they choose to ignore that information and continue to disrespect me in that way, I just move on to find someone more responsible. If others want to accept that type of behavior and continue to use those workers, fine, that's up to them. As I said, all Mexicans are not like this, and many who used to operate like this have realized it's not going to earn them a lot of recommendations. Not bothering to let someone know you can't make it is not caused by some immutable genetic gene. I always find it curious that those who like to label others as judgmental do so while being judgmental themselves.

  2. A friend had hers punctured at a clinic here. Not that I plan to ever put myself through another, but I agree that this should ONLY be done in a hospital with a surgeon on staff.

  3. In Guadaljara you are close to qualify surgeon who can operate on you f they but your intestin, Lakeside you may or may not be close. think about that , it is not a question of price when you have a hole in your guts. It happened to a young man I know in Chiapas yesterday and they operated on him rightawy and he was saved,, here you are on your own if there is no surgeon available.

  5. Ate lunch there the other day and we were incredibly disappointed. Apparently they were out of the good "juicy" burgers because ours we're the all-too-familiar dry, tasteless, mystery meat burgers we've grown to expect in most places. Also the typical plastic cheese on top. The salads were a pile of overchopped lettuce with brown around all the edges. Why waste time on a restaurant like that?

  6. I don't have a world of patience, and an occasional no show by an otherwise good worker is tolerated, but for example: I've been using a man and his family crew for years. He was a reliable plumber/electrician. As of this year, he was contacted to do some work and was to show up on the next Monday. As of the next Friday, he didn't show and didn't call. That's when I went on this board and asked for a recommendation for a "reasonably" reliable handyman and got the names of several. The end result is that I found a small crew who showed up, did the job and charged reasonably. They will be contacted again when I need some work. If they don't show up.......I'll look elsewhere. It a person wants the business, they know how to keep a customer happy. They also know Gringo expectations, and are willing to meet them...or not. There is absolutely no use in complaining. Vote with your feet and your pesos.

  9. Sunday, I was able to rescue 6 kittens, out of a 10 feet deep hole. Mama cat (a stray cat....not mine) had been poisoned. I took her to the vet, but she died anyway, leaving those kitties for almost 4 days without food. After bottlefeeding them (+ flea baths), they are healthy and eating solid food now ( about 6 weeks old). I have them at the vet until Saturday (paid for). After all this, I need help. ......looking for good people to adopt 2 or 3 of them. I would hate to take them to a shelter, not knowing where they would end up afterwards. They have been through enough. And they are ready to get out of a cage A friend will pay for neutering all of them, when they are ready and another friend is donating some cat food. Email me with good news plse: elbelgicano@yahoo.com Rony

  10. A question for those using Ilox cable services. How is your reception? Both my neighbor and I have rather fuzzy reception, not something one would want to watch continuously.

  11. Just posted elsewhere...still out in lower SAT and checked near SuperLake and walking west to Black Coffee....H+ but really it doesn't work. Near the TelCel in the plaza it is 4G. Daughter in Guad (there are reports the problem is regional) has tried calling all afternoon her cell to my landline and every call is poor and drops.

  12. The other side to this coin is that local Mexicans hate this as much as gringos. One of my Mexican friends hired some guys to trim trees. He even paid ahead. When they did not show, he was pissed off. He said to me 'That is why we are a third world country'. The one that gets me is local businesses who don't return calls or emails when they stand to make a buck.

  13. I am moving from Morelia to Cuernavaca, about a year ago I sued an insurance company, in Morelia, the matter has not settled yet. The lawyer here in Morelia tells me that I can not transfer the litigation to Cuernavaca, but I have to continue it in Morelia is he correct? Thank you

  14. Must be a regional problem. Many calls not received or dropped while in progress. Talked to a Telcel customer in GDL having problems. as well. At home I usually see 4 or 5 bars on the phone.as i write this it is bouncing between 1 bar and zero bars with an x meaning no connection.
    1 point
  15. Telcel call reception has been an ongoing problem for 3+ days. I see zero bars as I write this. I have spoken to many and it is the same. Receive notice of missed calls when my phone was on and never rang. All areas lakeside plus some other areas as well. Those with Telcel wireless internet box are experiencing the same problems because the same cellular network services them.

  16. Of course he is correct. The same applies in any jurisdiction in the world. Courts aren't going to follow you around for your sole convenience, just because you moved from where the litigation was initiated, now are they!

  17. Correct. TV 'service' from an internet provider (ILOX or whomever) is NOT the same as streaming movies/tv programs etc. We have now heard from a few ILOX customers whose TV Service is way subpar... fuzzy reception and probably/surely not High-Def and maybe not even Standard Def quality. TV Service 'should' be on a par with offering from the like of, but not necessarily the content of, SKY or Telecable or Shaw. What say yee other ILOX customers who chose to also add/pay for TV Service to their in-house offering. I know personally of three that are not getting a TV signal 'worth looking at' and is surely not what they were expecting.

  19. Walmart juice section near middle...Jumex Unico Fresco..."jugo 100% natural". I buy the grapefruit juice and the orange juice "con pulpa" (there is also sin pulpa) because of the natural fiber. 1 liter for I think 18 pesos

  24. Here's a way to make a fairly simple one yourself, if you have any sewing skills at all. Get a pool noodle, cut it into 2 pieces the width of your door. Get an old pillowcase. Slip one of the pool noodle pieces into the pilow case. Sew the pillowcase together by hand the length of the noodle so the pool noodle can't slip around, but you can still pull it out once in awhile to wash the pillowcase. (the sewing doesn't have to be anything perfect, just has to form a pocket for the noodle piece) Slip the rest of the pillowcase under the door, pull it until the noodle part is tight up against the door. Mark the pillowcase where it comes out the other side of the door. Remove the whole thing, sew along the marked line. Slip the second noodle in and sew up the case the way you did for the first one and cut off the excess, if there is any. So what you end up with is a door stopper that looks just like the one Tiny posted the link to.

  26. I always used Shake 'n Bake to get juicy baked pork chops and chicken. It was convenient and easy. My go to site for recipe hacks is topsecretrecipes.com https://topsecretrecipes.com/kraft-shake-n-bake-original-copycat-recipe.html?category_id=555

  27. What I like about the above recipe is the bread crumbs are toasted, not pan fried in all the oil and juices. To me, a cleaner taste

  28. I've been doing Wiener schnitzel longer than I can remember. Also Pariser and natur schnitzel once in a while. At first using veal. Real veal is pink almost colourless. If it's red,it's not veal. A long time ago I switched to pork tenderloin and discovered it had more flavour yet the consistency of veal. For some reason the restaurants around here only do chicken Cordon Bleu[YUCK!] so about a week ago I decided to try making that but I haven't figured out how to secure the edges yet. Anyone done this? I hardly ever do breaded pork chops. The best chops for flavour are shoulder. If cut correctly looks like beef chuck steak. BBQ or cut up and fry, then make mushroom sauce. When I was a singe guy I developed a quick meal recipe to impress a new babe. Thin chop fried melted cheese on top with red wine and mushroom sauce and Uncle Ben's wild rice. I either got lucky or some hated that I cooked better than she did, never to be seen again.

  29. Of course, if you get it stamped at GDL, you hold it on to it and give to the MEX airline at boarding. With tight connections in MEX, it's helpful for the GDL INM to process the form. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

  32. A little off topic but if you are building insist on Schedule 40 plastic pipe for all drains. Do not let them use thin wall. The difference in cost is minimal.

  33. I agree with the 2nd opinion opinion. Doxies frequently have back issues and you could be doing something by accident that hurts. It could be that the maid does something slightly different that doesn't hurt. If the Vet doesn't find anything wrong (and have him or her watch as you remove the leash) you might try a slip leash like they use at dog shows. When you come back from the walk, leave the leash on for 15+ minutes. Then rub the dog's ears and gently loosen the leash and slide the leash off. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/remington-nylon-rope-slip-leash-in-green#customerReviews

  34. Oftentimes when a dog shows aggresive behavior the underlying cause is pain. I would have a second vet do a thorough examination for another opinion.

  35. I had my own business 'up North' as well and I always notified my clients if there was going to be a scheduling conflict. None of us know the reason for Saul's no show, and that does not mean it is ok to vilify him and decide his actions are 'bad'. Find out what the problem is before assuming the worst.

  38. I don't consider someone "the best" if they are challenged in the communication department. I don't expect a professional who is is stellar at their job to come cheap. But I do expect them to show up on time and let me know if they can't.

  39. At Lakeside the most common excuse, at least in the past, was "I had to go to Guad...".

  40. I wasn't judging Saul, I don't know the man. I was speaking in general terms. There can always be valid extenuating circumstances as to why someone can't call, but "I was sick", "My kid was sick" "I had to take my mother to the doctor" "My phone was out of saldo", "My phone was on the charger" and all the myriad excuses we hear on a regular basis just don't cut it for me. I run a business as well. if I'm going to be even 10 minutes late to a client's place, I message them- it's rude to leave people waiting without knowing if you're going to show up or not.

  41. My experience is the same as Mudgirl's. If someone doesn't notify me that they are not coming, I let them know that my time has value as well and I need to have my life organized. It is a courtesy to me and my being here when they say they will come is a courtesy to them.... as is paying them immediately for the work. YMMV.

  42. Yes, I realize that, I've lived in Mexico for 18 years. But I also know many Mexicans who realize that that's not how most of the world operates and that if they want to maintain a good reputation in their business, have gringo clients, who are usually willing to pay more and treat them better than well-off Mexicans do, that they need to step up their game. Those who don't have the presence of mind to let you know if they can't make it, or are going to be late, get crossed off my list, never recommended, and I give my business to those who are more considerate.

  47. Bless you, Rony, for all you do! I can't have a cat because of all the big dogs around me in the jungle. I did have an outdoor cat for 14 years, always knowing when I came back from housesitting at the Lake, that there would come a time when she didn't answer my call, and then it happened.....
