  1. cafemediterraneo, I believe you are quite correct to be concerned about vaccinations. Nobody should be able to prevent us from contracting whatever infectious disease strikes our fancy. Say, smallpox, or whatever you think might go well with the drapes. Do you honestly believe that the well-being of one individual outweighs the health of an entire society? Do you know that The Black Plague killed almost 100 million people in the 14th. century. How many people do you know of that have died from it? Anybody? Anybody at all? Didn't think so. Science: It's not just for movies, anymore.

  2. I'm so f'ing glad it is the way it is here in Mexico and I hope the sh*t stirrers among us never get their wish to be more like our northern neighbors. I've had crappy dental work done on both sides of the border and I've sucked it up and moved on because life is too darn short to spend my time ruminating over what amounts to nada. I suggest some of the whiners and complainers on these boards do the same or, make the choice to scurry northward where they believe they are protected from life by laws, boards of one kind or another, and the ability to sue anyone and everyone who farts in their direction.

  3. Mudgirl makes a good point: It doesn't hurt to hear many viewpoints on any subject, and to suggest that those who favor one point of view over another believe in a flat earth is just a silly insult. Some people are convinced that most health problems today are partially due to living in an environment polluted by poisons in the air and in our food, and I think they have a good chunk of the truth. Who knows the whole truth of why we have infectious disease epidemics? Whatever the cause may be for measles or polio, there is a vaccine available to prevent it. The majority of people agree that's a good thing and represents progress in the medical field. IMO, the public spirited thing for anti-vaxxers to do would be to isolate themselves and their children from the rest of the population, but that's not likely to happen in the real world.

  4. I said I thought it was interesting. I didn't indicate that I was trying to convince myself of anything, nor did I bombard anyone with it, just posted the link. Some of us like to read differing viewpoints on various topics- we don't all have a closed mind-set. Nor assume that because someone thinks a certain way on one topic, that they believe the earth is flat, or anything else.

  8. I could go offline. But drawing the batteries way down each night and them recharging them each day shortens their life. And paying only 23 pesos per month (really $46 every two months) is worth not wearing out the batteries as fast. Replacing each of the Trojan 6 volt batteries costs about $400 US. I use 8 of them. So if I have to pay 23 pesos every month or about $15 dollars US per year to lessen the wear and tear on the batteries is well worth the investment

  9. "Chofer" does mean "driver" but a Jalisco driver license for a car says "automovilista." For a pickup under 3000 kg or an auto up to 15 passengers, one applies for a "chofer" designation; the categories of driver licenses are: Modalidad: Chofer, automovilista, motociclista, permiso de menor, conductor de servicio de transporte público

  11. The first time I got poked and prodded in all those really personal places by a lady doctor I realized the biggest difference between a lady doctor and a man doctor is the size of their fingers. I like lady doctors.

  14. I don't "insist". I suggest. I'm much more opinionated on the subject of what the government is doing to allow environmental regulations to be disbanded and allowing animals to be given hormones and such which wind up in our food supply. Sorry about what happened to your dad, but in some cases, a flu shot prevented a serious disease from killing a person who has a weakened immune system through no fault of his/her own. In our polluted environment, developing a healthy immune system is more of a challenge than ever.

  15. The ceiba is the sacred tree of the Maya and the national tree of Guatemala. "La Ceiba" is a city in Honduras. These trees do exist at Lakeside; I've seen them. In Jalisco, I think they're called pochote. You know it as kapok. The trunk has what look like protruding wide-based 'thorns'; turns out that they are not the least bit sharp or hard. Artisans are carving attractive tiny houses into the thorns. I think I've seen them for sale at the Wednesday tianguis in Ajijic. The trees produce large pods that hang from the branches. Eventually the pods ripen and burst open, leaving what appears to be cotton attached. In the past, that 'cotton' was used to stuff life jackets. The fibers are still used in the textile industry.

  16. Why do you insist that anti-vax people isolate themselves? If you are so certain that vaccines protect you then you should say "that's their business". There are thousands of virus and bacteria around us at all times that there are no vaccines for ,we are swimming in a sea of germs. the only protection is a healthy immune system and we believe that vaccines undermine a healthy system. And who knows what else is in the vaccines as we know our government and medical authorities have been known to do things secretly "for your own good". There is a vaccine court that handles bad outcomes from vaccines and they hand out $$$. They weren't around when my Dad was paralysed for 2 years after a flu shot in 1977...

  18. I suppose there might be a way to send that photograph to United Health Care, for example, and ask them to confirm that they would pay that little hospital in Jalisco, Mexico.

  19. I have used Dr. Carlos Garcia, now at the new Hospital San Antonio. He's an internist and has the best specialists referrals, most of which travel to Lakeside once a week. I am on his program, one flat yearly fee for as many visits as possible, plus annual physical, complete with EKG. I've been more than satisfied in the last ten years.

  20. Mexico has laws that reflect a low liability country being a semi industrialized or newly industrialized country - NIC. This is one of the main reasons many services cost much less than in a fully industrialized country that has laws that reflect a high liability country where services will cost much more to cover the costs of operating in those countries. This includes Mexico's government and services that private individuals/companies offer. If it is much less expensive there is a good reason besides the obvious. It will be difficult to understand these things without educating yourself to what constitutes low liability in most segments of a culture not concerned with causing costs to rise because of a higher liability written into their laws when a large portion of the population needs inexpensives services - government and civil.

  21. This has always been a “buyer beware” society. This applies to all transactions, even medical. You use a service provider based on word of mouth. The level of competence is going to vary greatly in all fields. Use these web boards to inquire or to do searches on the service provider you’re interested in.

  23. Spent about a hour at CAMAJAL in Guadalajara today. Spoke with one of the intake persons. CAMAJAL is a (required) arbitration forum that is a prerequisit to filing a civil action. It is used almost exclusively for health care professional (HCP) disputes. During my conversation, I confirmed some things I knew and got some information I did not know or suspect. First, I asked if there is any "Board" or other official body that tests or certified physicians in Jalisco. No. It was confirmed that the CITA (I thin that's it) simply shows that the HC P has received and registered that he/she has graduated school and received a diploma. This is as I pretty much knew. Next I asked about if there was any governmental body/organization that disciplined a HCP in the event of "misconduct" or gross negligence in the performance of his/her practice. No. I got more specific and asked as a very extreme example, what if a doctor is drunk, operated on a patient and cuts off the wrong leg. Can his/her ability to practice his/her profession be stopped. "Possibly." It was explained that a court can make an order (injunction) against a person who, while having completed the requisite training, is unable to competently practice his/her profession and is putting his/her patients at risk. This is an application of general laws against doing any act, intentionally or negligently, that is likely to or does cause physical pain and suffering to the patient. In other words, our drunk doctor can be enjoined from continuing practice. Where does it go from there? No idea. The takeaways from this post are 1) It appears to be false, misleading and deceptive to say an HCP is "BOARD CERTIFIED." AND 2) While there is civil recourse against a negligent HCP, it is most likely that realistically, there is little that can be done to stop the incompetent (for whatever reason) from continuing practice on unsuspecting patients. NEXT UP: What about malpractice insurance for HCPs?

  30. Someone here mentioned the Mueller Report, and after a little confusion I now see how it relates. The Mueller report absolved ALL AMERICANS of any collusion with Russia. The american public wild celebrating this fact (NOT). The Mexican law does not bar dogs from the DINING AREAS of restaurants. Hurrah for freedom of choice here...restaurant owners can make their facilities pet friendly, and the public is FREE to choose the restaurants they want to patronize. The expat community here went wild celebrating FREEDOM OF CHOICE (NOT).

  32. shouldn't have to, I did ours on line; however that was a few years ago; format should be first 2 initials from last name, first 2 initials from first name, birthdate (yy/mm/dd), letter, 2 numbers; just went on line a few weeks ago and got the new format RFC (color with your picture on it). Maybe their system has a glitch (which happens), all I can say is try again in a day or two.
