  1. I negotiated my rent in pesos only, based on the exchange rate on the day I signed my lease. No fluctuation whatever tied to the mighty USD. EVERYBODY (renters) can do the same! I pay the same pesos every month. Life is good!!

  2. This whole thread is useless without an opinion from Spencer. The blah, blah, blah, of Joco is just that.

  3. Joco is correct. You are living in Mexico and the official language of this country is Spanish, the official currency is MX pesos and the Mexican constitution and laws are unique to this country. If you don't like it, go back to where you came from.

  4. It's already been said by one poster that Spencer helped get her a lease where she'll pay her rent each month in pesos tied to the USD/MXN exchange rate that month. She seems content with that. Lexy

  9. I don't scare easily, but this guy is a sociopath, if not worse. He scares me. He is not mentally stable. That sudden "hug" at the end was a powerplay and I knew exactly why he did it. If he ever comes near me again and doesn't back up when I tell him to and I feel intimidated or threatened by him, I'll take whatever action I must to protect myself.

  10. I would not bother with a taser or mace on the dogs. Go straight to the problem and mace/taser the dipshit owner. If he calls the police, tell them he assaulted you. What's the difference, he is the responsible party for the assault, not the dogs. The dogs would have not attacked if he had them on a leash. I've never seen a dog put his own leash on.

  11. Agree with all the above. It is my understanding, too, that they have a daughter who is a chef and has been working in a top-notch restaurant in San Sebastian, Spain. She may have returned with them which would "auger well" for the special menu.

  13. I am saddened to read about your ordeal with the mauling of your beloved dog. I don't know if one can get homeopathic remedies in Lakeside or not (have not visited since 2007, but will be there in 2 weeks) , but I'd certainly be giving her Arnica pilules for pain and perhaps Gelsemium if she is exhibiting anxiety and fear. I would also consider carrying wasp spray for protection against attacks. It has a longer reach than a bamboo walking stick, and is easily available and legal for purchase in many places. Wasp spray in the eyes or mouth of an attacking dog (or human) will be more than just

  14. Joco, I figured if the price of rope dropped enough you would buy some and we'd have a hanging. We arrived in Ajijic in 2001 and after buying a big old house we turned it into Casa Flores B&B. We had, and still have, a Mexican attorney who got us hooked up with a contador (accountant). We have paid faithfully all Mexican taxes we owed as well as to the IRS. At any given time we had at least 4 employees and sometimes 6 when we were open for lunch to the public for about 2 years. We know all about paying IMSS, severance, holiday pay, aguinaldo and we have been to Labor Court where we won. If

  17. I kinda like Chillin for a good burger but can't beat Trips fries. Chillin gives you the choice of 10 frozen Walmart fries or 4 really good, lightly battered onion rings. If Trips had Chillins burgers or Chillin had Trips fries and quantity then heaven would be in the blessed union!

  18. Maybe Joco or someone else can show me the error of my ways for the following scenario. I have a house I decide I want to rent for $1000 US per month. You look at it and decide you would like to lease it for that price. We agree that I will stop by on the first of the month and you will give me a US dollar check for that amount. I send that check to my US bank and it shows up in my checking account. Maybe I buy some stuff on Amazon and have Estafeta ship it to us or perhaps I withdraw some pesos from an ATM. Does anyone seriously care what I do with that $1000 or how many pesos I get in a curr

  20. This web-board is where we found Dr. BriseƱo and it was the best recommendation ever. Massive wealth of knowledge and experience.. and totally up to date on everything new. His father, whom we met in the hospital in Guadalajara, is also a well-respected cardiologist. And, probably also explains why they both appear in such good health! Dad probably had everybody eating heart-healthy food growing up! He is the best recommendation we can give.

  22. I always loved the 'char-broiled' flavour of a Harvey's hamburger. Not greasy, like ones fried on a griddle, but actually cooked over an open flame. (making my mouth water just thinking about it) And I loved how they had the big stainless steel bowls up front with all the toppings, and you could tell the server how much of each to put on your burger. And you're right, ComputerGuy, the BEST onion rings I've ever tasted! Even the jingle still goes though my head...."Harvey's makes a hamburger...a beautiful thing!"

  23. There are so many errors in these posts, by pretty much the same two people insisting they are right when they are not. This whole thread has gone so far off track with misinformation that there is no way to even begin to correct the many, many errors which have been misstated as fact.

  26. You.ve nailed it.Essentially people not from this community are using Chapala as their playground. Problems of graffiti and gang tagging will increase. Probably some violence. Then Chapala will get lots of publicity butit will be negative, a black eye.

  27. There seems to be a major misconception about this issue. I used to pay my rent with a check in USD ever since I moved here. My Mexican landlords were always able cash these checks. But, since FATCA or whatever, we USians can no longer use checks here - no one will accept them now. So, I had to resort to making a couple of extra trips to the ATM to get out my rent money to pay in pesos. As the peso devalued, I had to ask myself, should I pay the current exchange rate, which was increasingly more pesos, or pay the peso rate at the time I moved to my current house. I have a great relation

  28. This may be something to take to the new Expat Officer in Ajijic. Bring photos, vet bill and printouts of what is being said here. Ask for her help in getting these dogs off the streets. These are expats flaunting the law, allowing their dogs to kill roosters and other dogs and endangering other expats.

  29. The extending taser should do the trick. The San Juan de Dios has some booths with self defense items like a weighted steel self defense baton that will extend about 24" but collapse to about 10" and fits in a holster. A whack on the side of the knee will bring anyone down with that and if they do get up, they won't be running. If some guy ever harasses you, do what most women do not do. File a report with the ministerio public and Immigration. Chances are they will be deported. Immigration has a list already, maybe a few of these deadbeats will get a free ticket home.

  30. for all you Americans here, i can tell you if you tried to push American dollar crap only, in Canada , you would get run out of town, deal with the currency of the nation you live in ,show some respect we deal in pesos here ,live with it, if the peso was going the other way I think you would all be grabbing offers with both hands, house is only worth what someone else wants to pay for it, pesos, cdn or usd or monopoly money, counter or reject, your a Canadian, so why would you expect USD, when you wouldn,t get it in Canada

  31. You are new & may not realize that expecting a call-back or a return e-mail is usually futile. It is a face-to-face society, so just go and have a personal chat. Keep a friendly demeanor, a smile and handshake at greeting and a gentle inquiry. It just might work. Demanding definitely will not work.
