HOTELS A-Go-Go……..Rosemary Zednick owner of Caminos Camelot had an idea and
the result was a fabulous trade show held at the Camino de Real Hotel. Half
the town was
there savoring, tasting and doing some serious munching as they strolled
among the colorful
promotions. Lulu Ramirez took the idea and ran with it producing a slick big
city type
promotion that was well orgainized and done with a lot of panache. Viva
Mexico!!!
UNSUNG HEROINES……The women of the DAR (Daughters of the American
Revolution) for years have been quietly providing shoes for children who
want an education
but whose family cannot afford to buy the pair of shoes required to attend
school. Of course
other needs are met also, but the only requirement the child has to have is
a thirst to learn,
have a good attendance record, and get passing grades. If he or his family
do not accept
these responsibilities the sponsorship is withdrawn and passed on to another
child.
BLACK TIE……Once again the popular Black and White Tie Dinner Dance will be
held
on November 13th at the Hotel Real de Chapala to benefit The School For the
Deaf. Always
well organized and loads of fun, it is also a chance for the ladies to dress
in the latest finery
and step out in high style. Dance to dreamy music under the stars, dine
under billowing
tents, and bid on spectacular prizes. And then there are the eggs… but buy
a ticket while
they last for 350 pesos and go find out for yourself.
SHRINER’S DEEDS…..She is five years old and her name is Raquel. Raquel was
born
with the lower part of her left arm missing. Today, thanks to the local
Shriners, Ninos
Incapacitados, Dr. Gonzales from Maskaras Clinic and the Shriner’s Hospital
in Mexico City
she has a prosthesis. After a stay in Mexico City where the arm was
attached she is able to
function as most people generally do….with both limbs. This little girl
with the saucy dark
eyes was happy with her new apparatus and the ability to do things she could
never do
before, but when she went to school she was teased by the other children and
refused to
wear the arm again. After much coaxing by her school-teacher mother, she
tried again and
this time with success. The Shriners have taken on a fair amount of
expense since, as
Raquel grows, a new prosthesis will be required roughly every two years
until she reaches
her full growth at the approximate age of 16. The Shriners are well known
for their help with
crippled children, but here, they are a small group of retirees and like
Raquel, they are
taking it one day at a time.
Walk Walk Walk…..First call. Join the Hash House Harriers for their annual
Walk-a-Thon on December 11th. It’s fun and you get breakfast. There are
three categories,

walk will benefit the Casa de Ancianos. Call Dagmar Strole (6-04-85) for
details
Calling All Bookaholics…..It’s November and time for the Book Fair at the
Chapala de
Real Hotel between November 12th -14th . See this large offering of books
both in Spanish
and English for all ages. Wonderful Christmas presents for Mexican
children. .There is a
feast of reading awaiting you. Serious readers can bring a wheelbarrow and
park it by the
Cappuccino Bar.
BELLS RANG …..for Arturo Stever and his German Bride, Inka. His parents,
Herb and
Luz are long-time residents of Ajijic. Married in Germany, the couple flew
here for a
reception with family and friends.
DULCET TONES ……Those who attended the benefit for the Golden Strings at
Borsalinos had a good dinner and were pleasantly surprised by how adept the
young Mexican
musicians were with six months of training. The crowd loved them. Donating
time and talent
was the jazz group that plays regularly at Viva Maria. This young group of
musicians is
taught to play the violin and guitar. There is a long waiting list of
youngsters that want to
learn either instrument, but violins cost $200.00 US dollars each and the
guitars run around
a $160.00 so the teachers who give of their time must depend on donations
of money or
instruments. Come to the concert on November 12th at the Auditorio and find
out more
about this worthwhile cause. Cost for the concert is fifty pesos.
BEAT FEET? …..There is a solution. Plunk yourself down on the padded table
and
let Dr. Felipe de J.de Anda Sanchez perform his magic on your pinkies as you
are lulled by
the soft strains of a Mozart Concerto. Sanchez, a Reflexologist has had
significant results for
people with high blood pressure and diabetes. As he works on your feet you
can feel all the
stress of the day leave your body. When you leave you feel rested and
relaxed and like you
could dance a jig. His clinic is located on the carretera down the pathway
between the
Caracol shoe and bag store and the restaurant.
