Around the Town
AROUND THE TOWN
The opening season brought us a serious drama followed by a hilarious farce and now December brings us the debut of an original musical. Shandar, written by Audrey Hoffnung, is about her father. The show was scheduled to be on the patio, which would have been a challenge. However the board decided the outdoor plan would not do. Patti Bellinger director, commented on the difficulty of lighting and other technical problems and was pleased to be moved to the stage .
DEDICATION….At last… the rehearsal hall will have a name. Wally and Winnie Waddel, both avid supporters of live theater, were the most generous donors and the facility will be named after them.
PLEASANT INTERLUDE…….Take time to visit the Villa Del Arte on Calle Rio Bravo No. 7. Stroll thru the galeria owned and operated by Javier Ramos. Then, rest your feet and reflect over a cup of coffee and a delectable pastry served in the small, but warmly personal area set aside for that purpose.
HASH HOUSE HARRIERS……It's not too late for the Walk-a-thon on the 11th of December. You can walk off some of those Thanksgiving calories. . Breakfast comes with the walk. For details, call Dagmar Strole at 6 04 85.
NAMES…People with one name seem to hold some fascination. Hollywood has its Cher, England had its Diana, Mexico had its Cantinflas and Ajijic has its Damar. This classy, soft-spoken gentleman was raised in an orphanage and left to go on his own at nineteen. Because he had no recollection of his mother or father he used a single name and it stuck. A teacher noticed he had a lot of talent and encouraged him to hone his artistic bent. His eyesight is failing now and recently he shipped his last commissioned painting to California. Is he sad to give up something he loves? No indeed! He is thankful for all the good things the tides of life have cast upon his shores. In fact, so appreciative of the many people he has known that he hosted a sumptuous dinner party in their honor. Damar was married to a beautiful woman who regretfully is deceased. Asked if he had ever thought about remarrying, he said, "When you have had the best you don't settle for seconds." What a tribute to his soul mate.
HUGE SUCCESS…..right out of the batter's box came a home run when Ajijic hosted the first International Film Festival. The gathering at Villa Del Arte can only be described by two words: sophisticated and opulent. So many people were responsible for putting a jewel in the crown that it is impossible to name them all. Of course there were pessimists. Even the originator of this paper and our own editor who shall be nameless were seen sharing a dish of crow in a dark and deep corner.
CONGRATULATIONS……are in order for the upbeat fashion show put on by the Chapala American Legion. A nice twist was added when some of the models were men strutting their stuff.. Some of the ladies had to be restrained. Hope they eliminate the few bugs and do it again.
OPEN HOUSE…..Anne Dyer has re-opened her interior design business and a lot of people attended the open house.
BRIDGE….and not the kind you drive over. Ajijic has a good-sized duplicate bridge club that hosted a sectional at the Nueva Posada in October. Again it was many volunteers who made it a success, but mention must be made of Judy McDonald, who as usual did a yeoman's job of organizing the tournament. Other plaudits must go to Debbie Greenfield and Norma Lyerly for coaxing members to donate fabulous treats after the day's games were completed. Each year it gets bigger and better. The Okens, Dan and Ruth won the Allen Lloyd Open Pairs, Joe Fontaine and Dan Oken the Banca Serafin Open Pairs, and the Ajijic Real Estate Swiss team event was won by Mac Argo 111, Doris Whitlock Denny, Jim Dobbyn and Norma Lyerly.
PARTY, PARTY, …..Yves and Claudette Beauregarde pulled out all stops when they had a party for friends. The party outgrew their home and they engaged Borsalinos to hold all the merrymakers.
CALTIC Galeria De Arte (Colon No. 13) opened its doors last month featuring the works of ten outstanding artists, Tamara, Pedro and David Orozco, Hank Beesley, Carlos Engebretson, Frank Wise, Victor Romero, Isela Martinez, Robert O'Connell and Anne Tunnell.
THE MUSICAL APPRECIATION SOCIETY brings us consistently better musical experiences and it shows in the size of the audience. December 14th will feature the Jalisco State Choir.
CHRISTMAS (all year long) WISH LIST….. Humans have basic needs and so do the animals in the Chapala Humane Society Shelter. Leashes, dog biscuits, stainless steel (all sizes) pet food dishes with weighted bottoms (plastic cracks, breaks all harbor unhealthy bacteria).
