RECENT TELMEX INTERNET PROBLEM

Any of you have this problem??

It seems to be OK now, but this glitch really affected the upload of my 6 minute video, which took around 20 hours! And I could hardly access any news sites the day of and after the big primary as well as Carnaval, which is held in many locations in much of the world. :013:

I called Benno's and they confirmed that they, too, were having a big problem with their own Telmex connection.

So, one must wonder why The World's Very Richest Man, Carlos Slim, can't manage to maintain the infrastructure of his internet empire. It's not like he couldn't afford it! Many say, well, this is Mexico, like we always have to lower our expectations here. But, with his money, this is totally unacceptable. I guess he lives by the maxim, "Greed Is Good." And, screw the people, including his customers.

Wow. I agree that a lot needs to be done to upgrade local infrastructure, butI must say that when I can get a home phone with unlimited calling worldwide, 10mb DSL Internet service, cellphone service with unlimited calling to US and Canada and 1GB of Internet, all for about US$35/month I'm very grateful to Mr Slim.

This compared to the situation when I arrived here 13 years ago. The only reasonable way to make a call to NOB was to use a callback service at US$0.20/minute.

Thanks Carlos!

No, that won't affect anything. Curmudgeon is right on the money.

Personally, both I and my girlfriend get consistent speeds. The only problem generally speaking is their damn modems. For instance, she had to return hers twice in two weeks, and the third one didn't work at all... another refurb. So Mexico City offered to send us the newest model by courier. Waiting for it now.

While there are those who might think that because I'm a computer guy, no wonder our speed is good. But that would be wrong... I cannot control the speed; all I can do is keep our computers operating and fix things when they go wrong. My high speed may be in part because of the new TelMex box over here by the new Presbyterian church, which means everyone in the surrounding area should be able to get better speeds too (just a guess). And yes, the infrastructure in my own house is up -to-date, because I had TelMex guys do it right. But the infrastructure at her house is not... in fact, I hand-twisted the ancient phone cable up on the roof last year, as the connector box had rotted. There is no sealant on the wires, no silicon to protect it... it's just hiding under a tile, and she still gets 5 Mbps consistently. Day or night, rain or shine, office hours or not.

i find that the vast majority of folks who complain about TelMex have never gone the complete repair route, and so just assume it's the fault of the phone company. There are many steps in the process, and I've shown them to dozens and dozens of friends here.

My comment was directed at those who simply complain but never try to fix it properly. Heck, I've done lots of jobs where it turned out that the computer was at fault, or the Internet settings, or the modem itself. Sometimes I have to convince them to let me try, so at least they know where they stand. And yes, if TelMex has not updated the equipment and the phone lines are creaky, there is always that for them to take responsibility for. But the Internet speed itself, when the infrastructure is good? Perfectly okay. Better than okay.

I avoid Telecable like the plague. I cannot get assistance from their staff, they have no support phone line, their installers know bupkis about Internet, and they assign WiFi codes willy-nilly, so I can't even help people get their WiFi hooked up if the number didn't get written down somewhere. As for the Internet service, I just have no knowledge of their system.

We'll I think Telmex is in the process of upgrading things around here. I felt like my Telmex speed was much better recently, but hadn't really checked it out. We ll I just did and here is the Result. I'm in Riberas on the 599 plan. This is WAY better than it was until just recently.

It must be said that the above "freebies" were mandated by Mexican law a couple of years ago as a part of a settlement of some kind of an anti-trust/monopoly issue. Slim was legally mandated to compensate his Telmex customers because of his telecom monopoly and price gouging. His prices are still high for the average Mexican!
How about building and maintaining high quality infrastructure and hiring quality people so that we always have consistent service?? In the US, these types of internet slow-downs or worse would cause a revolution. Slim can afford to do this! There is no excuse. He is richer than Bill Gates!
Slim could fund free clinics in every community in Mexico with his spare change!
While I was uploading videos - my latest 6 minute video took "only" 12 hours to upload, as opposed to my Carnaval video which took 20 hours to upload -I was unable to do anything to fix the problem, which seemed to only require a reset at some point. During this time my internet was basically unusable. I would have had to start over with the video upload, which, under normal conditions, takes around 1 hour per video minute.
