moonhill Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 They're back. The card cloners have returned and somehow managed to get my debit card info from the last time I used the Scotia Bank ATM by Dominoes. I thought I was very careful to cover the keypad when entering my PIN but they got it anyway. I got an email from my bank today and when I called we went over the attempted charges; the first two were trying to buy airline tickets, then reserve a fancy hotel I never heard of, and lastly tried to buy a drink in a bar. None of the charges went through because fortunately I only keep a small balance in that account to pay bills and had just drawn out all but $50, so when the big charges didn't go through they tried the little one to test the waters. I also removed overdraft protection the last time the cloners were hitting our area just in case something like this happened. They'll most likey set up at other ATMs also so for now be cautious.
cbviajero Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 A couple of days ago 3 Romanians were arrested in Guadalajara installing card readers on ATMs.
Ginger Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Oh, no. That was always one of the safer machines. Glad it wasn't worse for you & thanks for the heads up.
Travis Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Aaaargh. I have been using that machine exclusively for five years. Are you sure it happened at that Scotia machine, moonhill? And if so, when? Thanks for the warning.
moonhill Posted June 18, 2013 Author Report Posted June 18, 2013 100% positive about which ATM. I use it exclusively also and never use the card anywhere else, only cash withdrawals at that ATM. I made two withdrawals in the past week so I can't say which one I was targeted from.
Mainecoons Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Has this been reported to ScotiaBank? How would one go about doing that?
CWB Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Do you consider the machines at Walmart, inside at the far end to be safe?
Travis Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 I just checked my account on-line and my last transaction at that atm was June 10, and there's no fraudulent activity since, so I guess the machine was tampered with sometime after that. Thanks again for the warning, mooonhill.
bennie Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 this can be done from a major bank, or from a car parked outside the machine. there are many threads on this topic. this has been going on for years. see lakechapalacrime.com, etc (never get cash from a debit machine).
LaChula Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Bennie, how do you get cash if not from an ATM machine? Thanks.
behnwau Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 (never get cash from a debit machine). Nonsense. I use that machine exclusively with a Scotia debit card. Never had that kind of problem. my last 2 transactions were June 17 and my account is fine.
Floradude Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Nevertheless we have been warned time and again about using Debit cards.
behnwau Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Nevertheless we have been warned time and again about using Debit cards. What kind of warning? Never use them?
artsnob Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 I used that machine this morning, I just looked my BofA account on Line and no problem showing, although my account is insured if there is a problem...
Mainecoons Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 Keep checking. Sometime it takes a day or so before they try to use it.
bennie Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 la chula, you dont have an option for cash? that may be problamatic. behnwau, you are free to do as you wish, good luck. all i know is that over a dozen local cash machines were compromised in the last few years. (last time i did a cash withdrawal was 2003).
Mainecoons Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 We've also found when this problem occurs that we can call the security office for our BofA cards and advise them we are using the cards for cash withdrawal on a certain day and time and to reject any other debits after that, until we contact them again. I had hoped that when they put a new machine in that location, it would not have this problem. Very much appreciate the heads up, we'll resort to our call in approach again.
artsnob Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 I called BofA and reported this to them, and told them I wont be using my card for a week, will let them know exactly when I will use it again...
bennie Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 also be careful where you use your debit/ or credit card. there is a device that can be put under the machine. this is in mexico & the USA. some waiters do it in restaurants. (ajijic & NYC has been confirmed).
StevenDrew Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 la chula, you dont have an option for cash? that may be problamatic. behnwau, you are free to do as you wish, good luck. all i know is that over a dozen local cash machines were compromised in the last few years. (last time i did a cash withdrawal was 2003). So then, as to the question posed to you of "how do you get cash if not from the ATM" your answer is would be.....?
RVGRINGO Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 In a dozen years; no serious issue with machines and never had need of a Mexican bank account. Online banking from the USA is easy and there are ATMs everywhere. Maybe we are just lucky?
cookj5 Posted June 18, 2013 Report Posted June 18, 2013 It's not a perfect solution, but we always use ATMs that are inside a bank, and only when the bank is open. It is our impression that the banks keep a bit more of an eye on the machines than the operators of the stand-alone machines.
bennie Posted June 19, 2013 Report Posted June 19, 2013 stevndrew, jnc has the better option. that still doesnt make it safe as fraud can be done from a central bank. i also dont know the rules for opening a bank account here, check it out. i never did any banking online. i only paid some US credit cards that way.
