Timing on renting a house

I was wondering how difficult it would be to find a good home rental in December?

I am a single woman with a small dog looking to come and spend a year, or more if I like it. I speak a little Spanish, and would be ok in a more Mexican neighborhood as long as the house had fairly up to date amenities and came mostly furnished.

My current lease in the states is up mid December. My tentative plan was to close up here, put my stuff in storage and get down there before Christmas and stay in a temp place while looking for my new home, but I have to wonder: will all the good rentals be spoken for by then?

I am coming down August / September for a couple of weeks to look around, and could fly back down again before December if needed to secure a place. But, would prefer to skip this step if there will be plenty of rentals on the market.

What advice can you give me in regards to securing housing?

So via PM I am told that mid December is NOT the time to be looking for a rental. When would be a good time to come down to search? I assume that when I am there in Aug/Sept it will be much too early?

aug/sept not too early. sign lease for dec 1st. the problem w/arriving mid dec. is that the owners may be away, or the agents, or managers. you need someone there when you arrive.

We have been here for 17 years and things have changed. I can remember flying down here in October many years ago to secure a rental for January and February. Rental agents laughed at me for wanting to pluck the heard out of the season. They were happy to offer rentals for 6 months minimum and told me I could stay two months if I wanted but I had to pay for 6.

I realize your situation is not the same but my bet is that if you came in December and stayed in a B&B for a few days you will find a rental and the landlord will be damned glad to have you if he has gone that long without a tenant.

she can come mid december. but my point was she may get many recordings that they are on vacation till jan 6th. even movers stop working dec 7th for 4 weeks. a b&b is a good idea, she can get a weekly or a monthly rate.

OK well I will seriously look when I come down then. I was afraid no one would want to commit that far out but perhaps that is the way things are done there since it is such a snowbird location.

I could fly down the end of November to take care of things, bring a few suitcases and make sure everything is on track for a move in 2 weeks later. I would only be doubling up on rent by a couple weeks that way.

Thanks for the great advice folks!
