Bigrig1919 Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 Does anyone know of anyone who can build me a Wood Fired Pizza oven? I have the plans of the oven I want written in English. It's a small dome type, built with fire bricks setting on a concrete base. I need more than a brick layer. The person needs to know the principle on how ovens work. For instance, the oven floor needs to be insulated from the concrete base so that the oven will get up to temp faster. You don't want to be heating the base at the same time as trying to get the oven hot. The concrete needs to mixed with perlite or some other insulating material. A good oven can cook a Pizza in 1 1/2 min.
RVGRINGO Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 The building of the oven will be easy and rather economical. The wood to get it up to temperature will be very expensive, making such an oven only practical for mass production of pizzas.
Paco Loco Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 I converted a gas fireplace thats in my kitchen to a pizza oven. I had two shelfs made with the bottom shelf just above the gas jets where I place aromatic wood. I had a steel plate door made so I can close-off the front of the fireplace. The oven works like a charm.
TexasRanger Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 You can buy the actual clay oven in Tonala for around 1800 pesos. I have just installed an outdoor fireplace with an outdoor pizza/cob oven. The most important is to ensure you have a solid base then to put a solid floor in the oven. If you pm me with your email I will send you pics of what I had done. There is only one company in Tonala that makes them that I found and met all the specs from the plans I got from the Internet. Cheers!
Ezzie Posted May 20, 2013 Report Posted May 20, 2013 The Foccacia Restaurant just east of San Juan Tecomatlan on the Chapala -Mezcala highway just built a new one for their restaurant. I am sure if you stop in and have a pizza Freddie would be pleased to show it to you and even recommend someone who can build you one.

Cheers! Texas ranger I sent you a pm with my email. This sounds like just what I'm looking for. I'm assuming you buy the clay dome and install it on your base. I love homemade pizzas and have been reading about wood fired ovens for several years. One pizza blog I'm following says, he now cooks pizzas in 1 1/2 min to 2 min in his wood fired oven vrs 15 min in an home oven.
RVGRINGO Posted May 21, 2013 Report Posted May 21, 2013 I also love the idea of a wood fired oven in the back yard, but I asked myself the following questions: How much does the wood cost to get it up to temperature? How long does it take to get up to temperature, before I can put in a pizza? How often would I make multiple pizzas for a large party? Would a gas fired clay oven do the trick if wood chips were added for flavor enhancement? How many times do I eat pizza each month? I decided: No vale la pena.
tomgates Posted May 21, 2013 Report Posted May 21, 2013 A bit off topic but home pizza makers might be interested in the blog: pizzamaking.com

MyHomeSweetHome Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 I'm getting pretty excited about the completion of our brick wood burning pizza oven. Any other homes lakeside that have brick wood burning pizza ovens? It'd be fun to see other home ovens.
