Torontonian Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 On another thread someone talked about a truck that had good value. As a non-driver in Riberas I might be interested in supporting such a business. But the only one I am familiar with is one that used to stop across the road from the cat shelter. I didn't ask about prices as the produce was not great. Once though, while in Ajijic, I got some great strawberries from the back of a truck. Can you give some identifying features so I can recognize a recommended truck? Sometimes trucks will come to Lakeside with just one kind of produce and park for awhile. If such a truck comes near you and you are pleased with the product and the value then please post the location as well.
ajijicbound Posted May 15, 2013 Report Posted May 15, 2013 The one that comes to our neighberhood, talks really really fast on a loud speaker. It is not a recording. His fruits look good.
the walkers Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 bought a bolsa (bag) of canteloupes for 15p from a truck yesterday. they only carried melons and there were 3 smallish or 2 large per bag. the melons were firm and very sweet, just perfect. sometimes we get watermelons or strawberries from from a one-product-only truck. usually they're at the peak of ripeness...now if we see a truck with mangos we'd like to make some mango chutney.....

sasesofe Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 The trucks with either one or several varieties of produce have disapeared from Chapala streets. I seem to remember them coming by twice a week and sure wish they would come back.
RVGRINGO Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 I saw the strawberry truck on our street this week. Same for the cookie truck, etc. I am sure the other trucks are still around.
virgogirl Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 There is one with great prices and a good variety that comes on the back street behind the WEDS. market in Ajijic. it is hit ot miss but it is Weds during market time if you can spot them.

lcscats Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 There's a cookie truck? Yep last time I saw it was a while ago and I think they changed there route. Old ford pickup truck with cookies and baked goods that pull out of the back. Usually we saw them in Ajijic around dark. Not seen in a while I am afraid. I try to stay away from it LOL.

More Liana Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 I wonder if the 'cookie truck' is actually Don Pedro, the baker. His bakery used to be on Nicolás Bravo. Later he moved to the west end of Ajijic. He never had a store; his business is wholesale. If you knew where his ovens were located, you could go to the bakery and buy bolillos, wonderful big cookies, and all kinds of pan dulce hot out of the oven. Another of his specialties is doughnuts. He'd take one--with a long fork--out of the hot grease, fold a paper napkin over it, and hand it to a customer. Bliss! In the early evenings, he (and often his wife) also drove around in an unmarked, battered, faded-green pickup truck and sold bread out of the back end. If the elusive 'cookie truck' really is Don Pedro, and if you see him on a street near you, be sure to buy his goods. Marvelous!
klm Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 And let's not forget the ICE CREAM truck with the beach umbrella on the back shading the ice cream.
Islander Posted May 17, 2013 Report Posted May 17, 2013 Oh, I love these trucks. We rented in the village (Ajijic) and I used them all the time. But we will be living in gated community next winter and I do not think they will allow these produce trucks there I did not follow the names of them....just go and look what they have to offer and for how much.
