Kevin K Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Just paid a visit to El Granero (on the carretera next to Gossip's) and was impressed once again with the care that goes into their selections, the great prices and solicitous service. They would be worth a special trip for their sea salt alone, which is to the best of my knowledge the only salt available in the area that hasn't been fluouridated or iodized. At 15 pesos a kilo it's a steal. There are all manner of hard-to-find spices, nuts and oils, some seriously good dark chocolate, chiles and much else. Prices are excellent and they're happy to look in Guad. for anything you want that they don't have. On the way home I visited the new "gourmet" store in Laguna Mall and was seriously underwhelmed. It would take someone who really knows food, local expat tastes and is capable of negotiating the formidable costs and regulations involved in bringing imported foodstuffs into Mexico to make an enterprise like this work, and there's no sign of anyone like that being involved in this business. It makes me appreciate just what a great job Pancho does of reading and catering to us fickle folks over at Super Lake.
FHBOY Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 +1 - El Granero is a gem - let's hope it stays that way.
contrarian Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 Casa Gourmet far outshines Super Lake in both Asian products and hard-to-find spices. We like having choices.
Ginger Posted May 7, 2013 Report Posted May 7, 2013 I bought several great 12x18" rimmed baking pans at El Granero a while back. I don't remember what I paid but I was pleased with the quality & the price. Great shop.
