I just came from a popular auto repair shop in Riberas. They have a guard dog in the back on a heavy chain that is in bad shape. It had no water, so I asked them to get it some water right away, which they did. I had just come from the Animal Shelter pet shop, so I had some dog food in the car. I offered it to them, but they said no, they had food for the dog. It was really thin. But the worst part was that it had sores all over its body. I'm almost in tears as I write this. They said they have medicine for it, and that it would take a few weeks to work. I said I would buy the dog from them, but they said no - they needed the dog. I then said I would pay to take it to the vet for them, but again, no. Besides, it bites. They said it was already under a vet's care. I don't believe it.

Can anything be done?

Name them and shame them. Let us all know who it is. Maybe public opinion about them might change their mind about how they treat their guard dog.

It's Escalera. I think what might work is if I can get a dozen gringos to go there at a certain time tomorrow or Saturday - like a flash mob - and we can all threaten to boycott his shop, and to communicate what he's doing to all the gringos at Lakeside. What do you think? And then what would we do with the dog? I could ask Dr. Ladero to come over to help. Good idea? Or bad idea? He's got my car until tomorrow. The brake lines rusted through, so the brakes don't work. It's not driveable. I want it out of there first so he doesn't sabotage it.

The owner of the business is named Carlo'\s and he operates out of the San Juan Cosula location. Maybe a trip up there to disucss this with the owner? This is unacceptable, we too use Escalara and we would be prepared to "boycott" if necessary.
Erin is the name of the manager of the shop in Riberas.
Dr. Pepe may be able to help here - we know Pepe well and could ask him to make a visit
PM me if you want to discuss these options further.

I would proceed very carefully - as it would seem that you are making a lot of assumptions. Maybe the dog is under medical care. Maybe it is not even his dog.

Today on my way thru the libramiento I saw a man lying on the side of the road and not moving at all. I stop by the Firestation and a Red Cross ambulance was there. I showed them where the man was and he was still alive. I bet many people saw this man an did nothing. I will do something for this dog. For me a life is a life and no matter I cannot keep myself detached from the situation.Mad Max advise to be careful is a good one but do something. Avoid confrontation and Gudrun is the right person to go to. I take my hat to you.

There is a difference. The dog was not lying on the side of the road - he was on private property and the person that inquired about the dog was told that his help was not wanted/needed. I don't know what the right answer is - as all we have heard is one side of the story. Which is why I wanted to comment that anyone that wanted to get involved, should proceed carefully - who knows if the conversation was in english (subject to misinterpreation) or expert spanish - when I have been there, I have never seen a dog (I was there yesterday) - doesn't mean the dog wasn't there.......... I just didn't venture in the back part....

There is power in numbers.

A friendly but serious talk with whoever is in charge of the dog would be in order. I know the shop and they deal with many Gringos; they don't want bad P.R. and they know gringos care about animals.

No confrontation; just say you want to help him keep the good will of the gringo communityl

Thanks, everyone, for your good wishes. Gudrun and I and Dr. Pepe are on top of this. We're proceeding carefully. Yes, the dog is in the back where the cars are parked waiting to be worked on. Most customers wouldn't have reason to go back there. The only reason I did was that I needed to get the dog food out of my car before going home. Don't go back there and tip Aron off today, though. I'll let you know how it works out. We're a very determined team - have no fear.

Bad news and good news - I went to get my car, along with Gudrun and Dr. Pepe. Dr. Pepe took one look at the dog, and said it has lupus. That's the bad news. The good news is that he's going to come by every day to give it medicine until it gets better. Then he's going to try to get it out of there. The chain is too short, and they don't know how to take good care of the dog there. Gudrun will take it, if it isn't too much of a biter. So far, I haven't seen it be aggressive at all.

Aron at Escalera seemed grateful for Dr. Pepe to look at the dog, but, clearly, dogs are not his shtick. He's not a bad guy - well, I'll let you know tomorrow when my car actually gets done. He replaced the brake lines today, bled them and tested the brakes. He thinks something may have happened to the master brake cylinder when the lines rusted through. That smells of money to me, but it's quite possibly on the up and up.

In any case, both Gudrun and Dr. Pepe have promised that the dog will not only be taken care of, they'll get it out of there, too. Have a great weekend! I know I'll sleep better.

And for me. He only charged 840 pesos for completely re-doing the brake lines. Master brake didn't need replacing. It runs fine now. I'm a happy camper.

gudren may not remember this. around 8 or 9 yrs ago i found a dog, near my house. i called gudrun & she came w/another man who worked w/her. the dog was happy to see them, & she took him back. turns out this same dog originally was living @gudruns, & adopted by a car garage to guard the place. the dog had run away. he didnt look sick but kind of thin. gudrun said she would never give a dog to a mexican again. i wonder if this is the same garage? & this newer dog was chained so it would not run away?

I don't think so. She hadn't been there before, and she would have mentioned it. We had a bite to eat afterwards.
