holdrja Posted August 8, 2012 Report Posted August 8, 2012 A volunteer at the LCS told me today that I couldn't renew library books online becasue the LCS web site has been hacked. I went to http://www.lakechapalasociety.org/ and sure enough, saw a list of ads. Does anyone know more about this? Did they change their URL maybe? (like THEGuadalajaraReporter....)
PULELEHUA Posted August 9, 2012 Report Posted August 9, 2012 My understanding is that the LCS domain registration expired and the domain reseller company has not responded to the efforts to renew the registration so LCS will likely have to register a new domain name.

Status:CLIENT TRANSFER PROHIBITED Status:AUTORENEWPERIOD Last Updated On:07-Aug-2012 18:41:30 UTC Expiration Date:04-Aug-2013 19:04:04 UTC
Canuck Posted August 10, 2012 Report Posted August 10, 2012 Mad_Max The domain was renewed but this may have been done by the registrant: Registrant Name:Qingqing Han Registrant Organization:Marsgerm.com This is fairly common practice where a registrar will renew the name with ICANN to maintain control of the domain. This allows them to use it for advertising, offer it for resale or simply hold it hostage.

Just re register it with a the in the front of the name. Dont give in to the blackmailers.
TrueBrit Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 What a shame. I see LCS has changed to LakeChapalaSociety, com
Chapala.geek Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Looks a lot to me that it is yet ANOTHER situation of someone holding a domain hostage! Such a shame. I have sure heard of many cases of that happening down here. HA! there was even a case on People's Court a short while back of a web-designer holding the domain hostage so that the client was STUCK with using her and her bloated prices to keep the site maintained. If people are going to "hire" others to be their geek, they should be just as vigilant to oversee it all, just as someone having a bookeeper tending their books. If the person finds that their funds are being embezzled because they weren't keeping an eye on the bookkeeper, then its their own fault! Same thing here. If you are going to hire someone to make your website and handle the registration, you BETTER check them out! Ask for references, and find out if you are to be given all access codes, and the domain SHOULD be in your name... not anyone else's.

I hosted a website with godaddy - and once I cancelled the domain, they held onto it for 42 days: For expired .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us, .ws, .name, .cc, .mobi, .me, or .tv domain name registrations, we hold your domain name for approximately 42 days before canceling it. Domain name renewal during this period is subject to applicable renewal and redemption fees If you want to keep any domain that you own, renew it before it expires - if your hosting company does not provide renewals services like godaddy and others - and make sure your name is the owner/administrator etc - not the web designer.

TOTALLY!!! So much has been happening now, I certainly hope that this will be a lesson to ALL that have (or thinks they have) domains and/or hosting...
brandondstafford Posted September 12, 2012 Report Posted September 12, 2012 That might be because of LCS domain registration expired. They should re register it then it will be ok.
