If it is your computer causing the problem, that is not a Telmex problem. It is not up to Telmex to improve your computer. If you don't know how to improve your computer that is not a Telmex problem either.

People need to clean their registry, clean the computer and defrag. If any of the programs below ask to install a toolbar click "No" or "Decline" and the program will install anyway. Read as you install to make sure you aren't installing anything along with the program that you do not want. Use all of the registry cleaners and since they are free each one picks up different problems. There are thousands of free programs on this site but make sure you read the "User Reviews" to determine how good a program is.

If you run windows 7 you don't need to defrag it is automatic.
If you run SSD (solid state hard drives) you need to turn this
feature off as SSD devices should not be defrag as it wears
out the SSD device.

Stuff does change folks.

1.74/.22 Also on the $599 plan. Not good news on the ones closest as I'm on the fringe and of course that's without voice.

Windows 7 has a basic defrag and it needs to be turned on. I have Win 7 but I bet most people are using XP. I don't use the Win 7 defrag because there are better free programs avaliable.

When selecting drives to defrag, one should uncheck SSD drives. Any other "positive" suggestions?

Your computer will run faster and have fewer problems if you do not defrag, and in particular if you avoid registry cleaning programs.

With Windows it is impossible to avoid registry cleaning or defrag. Windows throws stuff all over the drive. It's not like an Apple OS.

Mine was on by default and they specifically warn about defrag and SSD hard drives from Micron.
It is my understanding win7 defrag is good enough and automatic if engaged. With large HD sizes
with high aural densities defrag is not as important as it use to be. Not much free space it becomes
important again. Maybe mine was engaged by HP in there configuration but it was turned on. Your
miliage may vary.

Windows XP yes
Windows 7 no

Actually The Apple OS has a base of BSD UNIX with a very good
graphics shell and it does throw stuff all over the place you just
don't notice in Apple. All operating system throw stuff all over
the place. Nature of the beasts. Actually Win7 is more secure
than Apple OS. Apple is now starting to spend big time on security
as they have fallen behind and the bad guys are starting to attack
the Apple OS. It is a very interesting situations. Some of the big
security companies are talking about it now if you want to read more.

My Win 7 is much worse about spyware, pop-ups, browser hijacking, tracking cookies, etc., than XP. You might read this stuff on the internet but the truth is very different. Apple is getting more attacks now because there are more Apple OS.

Are the outages in many areas? Although my DSL is fine, I've noticed several to many of the outages in or Riberas Del Pilar. It's also really bad at the weather station in the same area. Check out this link

http://chapalaweather.net/

The weather stations web page shows a message when the speed is really slow showing the speed and a simplified web page.

We finally were able to get Telecable after years with no home phone out in neck of Riberas. We are the last house along the lake before the SAT arroyo starts and poverty-stricken Carlos Slim didn't want to bring posts to our house. So now we have both a phone and a good internet connection which has been very reliable with the new equipment/cable that Telecable installed. Download speeds have been above 15 MBPS consistently and we've had no outages except for when we lost electricity or the week Telecable was still doing some installations in the area. I've recommended to Steve that he change servers since he lives down the street from us.

Windows 7 installs with the defrag OFF and set to only run manually. This is because it is a totally unnecessary procedure; the file system in Windows 7 takes care of itself very well. For earlier versions of Windows, defragging can be very dangerous: a small percentage of the time, it will incorrectly replace sector information, causing weird Windows problems. A large percentage of the time, you will not notice any difference in speed/performance. If your Windows installation is in such bad shape that a defrag actually produces a noticeable difference, you can expect Windows to crap out any time... it really needs to be reinstalled.

I tell you this in confidence; I much prefer that my customers continue to defrag, because before too long, they will be calling me with requests for service.
