We are thinking of doing a trip NOB to reset our tourist visas and were hoping some of you more experienced folks could share some of the cheapest cities to fly to from Guadalajara and which airlines.

We're going nuts trying to figure out the best city combination. We don't really care where we go, just want it to be cheap. Are there some secrets we don't know? We've got until early Sept.

In August, you could fly Volaris (http://www.volaris.com.mx) from GDL to San Diego, spend a few days in beautiful San Diego, and fly back. Flights cost as little as $144.74 USD one way.

You could also fly Aeromexico round trip GDL/Chicago for a little under $300 USD.

Think outside the box. Volaris, Interjet, and other Mexican airlines fly to any number of destinations in the USA and usually cost less than more common carriers. And try http://www.despegar.com for some bargains, too.

Volaris flies non-stop from GDL to Tijuana. Cost--depending on day/time you fly--is about $350USD round trip. If you are going to San Diego anyway (you do have to cross the border to deal with your FMM issues), it's much, much easier just to fly into and out of San Diego. I've flown into Tijuana many times over many years and, now that the San Diego flight is part of Volaris's itinerary, probably would never fly to Tijuana again.

In case you are not familiar with Volaris, it is a highly professional airline with new planes and excellent and on-time service. Carlos Slim owns it.

a friend recently flew RT from Phx to Guad, only about $300. Not sure which airline anymore, think it was Alaska?

I agree the Mexican airlines are the best deal. Also, they treat you SO NICE compared to the US cattle car airlines. There is such a thing as professionalism still alive here in the Mexican airlines. Also, you will get a snack and alchoholic beverege (or non-alc whatever you like) free of charge. We recently flew Interjet to San Antonio, TX. Had several hours in Mexico city, but the price was right. They also fly to Cd. Juarez, where you could get a taxi to El Paso.

MountainGal I would like to ask why you need to compare cheap airline to somethingor event in the US. Did you have a bad experience in the United States of America?

Yes, as a matter of fact. I flew US Airways from Phoenix to Guadalajara about a month ago. The US Airways employees spoke zero Spanish, while it appeared that at least 90+ % of the customers were Mexican. It was total chaos, the flight attendants were yelling at the Mexicans that their carryon luggage would not fit in the overhead bins (regional jet) nobody understood... When my husband asked why the y don't have Spanish speakers on international flights, the flight attendant (extremely aggitated) said that the airline does not pay extra for bi-lingual employees on this flight. Ugly and nasty employees vs. professional, nice looking (I know, not supposed to be important). A HUGE difference - and at much less price. You decide...

Also, speaking strictly about safetly, the safety briefing on US Airways was in English only.

I flew Interjet to Tijuana and took the bus across the border last year. The flight was fine and was not expensive.

They must have change employees and policy, every flight I have used they spoke very good Spanish, and treated me and the Spanish very well. You must have been horrified to be treated that way!

A few years ago we flew from Phoenix to Guadalajara; can't remember the airline but it was a major one like Delta or United. Most passengers were Mexican but we noted at the time none of the evacuation procedure info, flight info, cell phone usage info, etc., was in Spanish. It was chaos as well - only a handful of us knew what was going on - the flight attendants spoke English only & mayhem ensued.

The US Air flight between Phoenix and Guadalajara is actually operated by Mesa Airlines, formerly the operator of America West Express. I should have clarified. They are and always have been a very poorly run airline. I've flown US Air from Phoenix to Vancouver - so the "real" airline and they were fine.

Look at VivaAerobus. It always has specials but you do need to fly through Monterrey. There is a special now for $79 USD from Monterrey to San Antonio.

It seems there are bargains for every place EXCEPT Houston. It is always around $500 USD.
